Fight, fight, fight. One of the leading figures in British comedy (I'm Alan Partridge, The Thick Of It) calls on our TV industry to be more aggressive in selling itself abroad and attacks the interference of government and press in the creative sphere.

Armando Iannucci, blessings be upon him, has said what I've been wanting to hear for a long time. It's sad that the best of the BBC is not something we can look forward to, but something we have to look back on. The creeping deterioration in home-grown TV is down to the increasing grip of this pestilential accountant culture that probably started back in Thatcher's time. If I had the power, I'd make Iannucci DG.

One of the most talented people in british broadcasting. Anyone who wants a future as a television controller - you'd do well to listen to this guy.

I can't watch this. The ultra close ups, blue lights added to the video, the shots that drift off to one side and the bits of interview that merely repeat the perfectly good lecture that is being lost behind some editor's idea of 'style'. Armando should have done this as a TED talk.

@ThePsycoDolphin Absolutely agree. I hate to name specifics but I watched an episode of Miranda the other day and wondered why we were still broadcasting television that would have looked stilted and old fashioned in the early seventies. I hope the revolution Armadno talks about does occur, because British television is in a sad state.

I do wonder if BBC First (Worldwide's new global subscription network of first-run drama shows - beginning in Australia) is a direct result of this talk.

Ironic to see this genuinly good speech about trusting in the intelligence of the audience being edited this inanely. And why on earth, why? All the interviewed celebrities unquestinably have their individual virtues, but in this instance they interrupt the written speech just to add... what? Glamour? Footnotes? Is it really unimaginable we might be able to sit through half an our of talking without getting bored due to the lack of changing input? Sad,really. Still, Armando Iannucci did greatly.

This lens flare is very overdramatic for someone giving a lecture about screenwriting

Good on Armando. I have become frequently frustrated by the lack of decent Brtish TV in recent years. America is spewing them out in their droves and yet were still stuck with dross like EastEnders. Anything genuinely experimental or edgy has been sidelined now for lower-common-denominator TV that is bland, repetitive and dull. Especially in comedy. It shouldn't be rocket science to notice just how far British TV comedy has gone down the shitter .

Yes. Let's find out who made it, and make them actually watch it. It's a disgrace, and the irony is it's been made for bafta - no doubt by the sort of trendy Groucho Club BS-er without a clue who bigs themselves up by being an "enthusiastic" member of bafta in the first place. In a funny kind of way, it perfectly represents everything that's wrong with British TV.

God, these inserted talking heads are horrible. Particularly the guy with the glasses.
