Thank you Mike! I really mean that. As a 40 something man that has only had two job his whole life... Military and Law Enforcement. neither needing a degree, It was hard to find a job. I now have a wonderful job as a CDL driver obtained thru zip recruiter. Thank you for letting everyone know there are tons of jobs out there if you are willing to sweat. You have a life long follower here. 😀
Wow Mycroft S, I thought I had wrote this comment because I too am a 40 something man that has only had 2 jobs. They as well were both Military (ARMY) and LEO! Thank you for your service brother!
The jobs have been there for years. I'm in those shops all the time. I travel around the country repairing cnc machines, there is a shortage of skilled employees everywhere. I've loved your support of us. And you tell the truth in a that gets people to listen. BTW, good story as usual. Modern day Paul Harvey.
Mike you are one of my favorite people. I grew up before 9/11. Colleges openly, over charged, & accepted students. I quit before I took a loan in my fourth year. Military didn't want me because I wasn't college educated. I'm young enough to know that I wish I could have served for our country, but I'm broken by years of being a boy discovering how to be a man. After the attack I was broken enough not to qualify. I just want our politicians to be honest. I want them to be good to each other. I just want them to create a better country for all of us. I have nothing to stand on, but I don't want this to be a pipe dream. I just want this country to work to be better.
One of the problems with pacifism is there are many people out there who only understand...I have a big stick, and if you don't play nice, I'll hit you with it. I'm told someday the lion will lay down with the lamb, but until that day comes the lamb better be heavily armed.
@@jamesa7506 1. thanks for the civil reply (This is You Tube, you keep this kind of thing up and you'll get In Trouble! :-)) 2. Not satire...reality 3. Remember Our Lord told the Apostles to go buy a sword (Luke (22:36).
@@stevenwiederholt7000 this is true. We should sell our cloaks and buy a sword. We also should put on the whole armor of God. I'm certainly pro 2nd amendment, and put my trust and faith in our Lord. Have a good one out there, sir! May God bless you and yours.
My grandfather and I used to listen to Paul Harvey when we were out in the workshop. Maybe my future grand-kids will say, "we used to listen to Mike Rowe."
Mike, I wanted to share a personal story with you. Love what you are doing. Let me bring up an issue that happened to my brother-in-law. He worked for one of the largest companies in the country Catapillar. He gave 37 yrs. of his life working for them in administration but he started at the bottom his first job out of high school. He went in to work one day and his Supervisor told him he was fired. Their reason was they told him he could not keep a team together. He was over quite a few young men millennials that would not show up for work, they were slack in doing what was assigned to them, they would walk out to smoke or break when it wasn’t break time & leave before their shift was over. This was not a demanding job it was selling & stocking parts for heavy equipment. Selling to some of the most wealthy people in the country. Each time he would reprimand the young men for falling down on the job they either didn’t listen or decided to quite. We are talking about a job where you aren’t out in the elements they worked in a controlled environment. My brother-in-law is one of the greatest guys you will ever meet. He lost all of his retirement & benefits he had worked so diligently for all those years. This is not the only incident that I am aware of it is almost impossible to find young men and women who are even willing to work whether they have a degree or not. I have friends that their 30+ kids are still living at home with their parents. I believe this generation of millennials are self entitled the parents have raised them to believe they have no responsibility for their own lives. Yes there are plenty of jobs available but you will only get someone to work if it is convenient for them. They won’t hours convenient for them Mon.-Fri. no weekends. They can’t work on a day that interferes with ballgames, golf, cheerleading, snow skiing, bowling or video game time. I suppose you get my point!!!
I agree with what you are saying. Millennials want to make a lot of money without giving much effort. The solution is heiring the seniors who have a good work ethic but then the young people whine that they can't find a job. At present it is an unsolvable problem. Where did the pride in your job go?
That's why they want socialism, or rather to reinstitute slavery through forced redistribution. They even cry about "slavery" of the past while wanting it in principle & action today. In chattel slavery, at least the slave got his room & board, but the taxpayer gets nothing for his payments to the government program dependent.
I was already familiar with the history of the Nobel Prize but Mike Rowe makes area story he tells more interesting. Thank you for all your good works.
I love this one. I am a romantic though and I hate they didnt fall in love and get married. I hate the arms dealer lived his life alone. The new website is fantastic. I had seen the jobs part and was very impressed with it. I am so proud of you. The foundation seems to really be transforming and expanding. I love that, Mike it will be your legacy, sure Dirty Jobs and RTf and even these stories.... but closing the skills gap and the impact you are making on it is about the most important thing you really can do to leave something that will out live us all. Thank you for a wonderful story time before bed. Now I will say good night.
Nobel's family were all very inventive. One of them invented the method for slicing wood veneer, which enable the making of plywood. Not as big as dynamite, but a huge positive contribution to mankind.
@@jamesa7506 Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for being a "community organizer" and Jr. senator. The award came before he was inaugurated! His presidential "leadership" for peace caused the deaths of thousands in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya.
What a story! I especially loved the fact that they listened to one another. If we could all do the same...no more shouting a word to end the conversation. Discussions are key to understanding the motivations, reasoning, etc.
There are jobs in so many places if a person is willing to look. Thanks for the insightful story. And bringing attention to the trades where so many jobs are unfilled.
Trucking is constantly looking for drivers. There's a huge driver shortage. After a year's experience, you can find employers willing to pay top dollar. I know because I did 👍🎩
Trucker Daddy - AKA John in Québec maintenance techs Machinists Welders Crane operators All paying around 100k a year if you’re willing to put in overtime. Shit, doral puts you through an apprenticeship program in either tinning or iron working and after 3 years you’re making 65$ an hour. Everyone knocks skilled labor as dirty and uneducated. But those people don’t seem to know how to build, fix, or make anything. Seems to me, going to college for psychology or liberal arts is an uneducated decision.
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. Jeremiah 17:9-10 KJV
I promise myself at every beginning of a new episode to fast forward through the Zip recruiter commercial...and I never do. Man... how I love to hear you tell a story, even a commercial. How I love to buy you a drink.
Well done sir I had figured it out before the end and still was enthralled as always. My story before sleep, thank you for this and all that you do. Peace and love
Life goal: getting Mike Rowe to join me on my podcast to encourage young people to chase their dreams. Keep up the good work Mike. It''s a pleasure watching your selfless appreciation of others.
Glad to see you're back...missed the weekly stories. Are you going to be at The Summit in WV for the BSA International Jamboree in July?? I'll be one of the firearms instructors. Hope to see ya there, fellow Eagle.
Yeah ok tried all those job/recruiter sites awhile back didn't matter what resume said first question every employer asked was what job experience do I have in that field. No experience no hire period. Can't do truck driver even if I wanted to anymore and that's about the only field out their you can go to school and get hired out of school so I'm left with no choices. Been that way since I got out of army, army was a curse job wise. building a tiny house hope that leads to something eventually. Unlike everyone else I've known I never had a buddy to put in a good word somewhere to get my foot in the door, and I'm not twenty, no references, etc., etc., So I'm screwed all around so far, only chance for me is to hopefully get my own business going eventually.
Ronald: Is this the first time you've heard of Mike Rowe and his programs to help people get trained for jobs? Aren't you aware of how much he's done to educate people, esp young men, that there are PLENTY of jobs out there that do NOT require college but DO require a trade school or often a brief specialized training program?
Interesting, Mike did you know that I was somehow implicated with your episode of Dirty Jobs featuring Gooy Ducks? Of course I can only assume exactly how that happened but just the same it is One of those things in the past I certainly won't soon forget... Well anyway that's the way I heard it!
Man! You are stealing my thunder. I love talking about the origin of the Nobel Peace Prize. I tell folks the origin of the Nobel Prize came from a guy who stabilized nitro glycerin with diatomaceous earth to create dynamite. That would no doubt qualify as a dirty job, but I digress. Said guy, Alfred Nobel, endowed the a peace prize. It's a fun fact to befuddle with. But that was before RU-vid. Now you're telling everybody. Thanks a lot Dude:)
He invented dynamite, an invention that was used for far more than just killing people. I'm quite sure that revolutionized Industries such as Mining and construction. Road making and railroad creation. All of which pushed us Leaps and Bounds into the Industrial Revolution You think that might have added to his legacy as well.. I just love it when non pacifist get the Peace Prize
James Walker: You misunderstood the whole story. The "arms manufacturer" was Nobel himself. He didn't "win" a Nobel, he began the Nobel Prizes as part of his will. They are his legacy and due, in part, to his ongoing relationship with a pacifist lasting many years. You also misunderstand what Nobel Prizes are. Nobel Prizes are significantly more than the Peace Prize! Nobel Prizes is an umbrella term. There are SIX categories of Nobel Prizes in various scientific fields, one for literature, and one for Peace. The least you can do is watch the video again. Every single name Mike listed throughout this video has been a Nobel Prize recipient. From Einstein to Eisenhower, Gandhi and Faulkner.
