Armenaki - Greek Song

Vocals, arrangement & video by Farya Faraji. This is a clip I filmed during my trip to Greece in May. I actually wasn't planning to cover this song, as I didn't even know it existed when I went on the trip. My Greek friends in the Peloponnese convinced me to go see Santorini (Thira), something I was reluctant to do at first because I expected it to be completely commercialised and touristic, but thankfully, at that time of the year at least, I discovered an island that still had some authentic charm left to it. I asked the locals what their regional style of music was, and I discovered the existence of Nisiotika, the traditional style centered mostly around that of the Cyclades Islands. Falling in love with it immediately, I knew I had to cover one of their songs in the two days that I had in Santorini, so I quickly learned this song, Armenaki, probably the most well known example of the genre.
Nisiotika and more specifically, the music of the Cyclades Islands is characterised mainly by the usage of the lyra or violin, the santouri and the lauto used to provide chord progressions. I didn't have access to the first, so I decided to build the instrumentation around the latter two. The tsampouna bagpipe is also a traditional instrument of these islands.
Greek Lyrics:
Αρμενάκι είμαι κυρά μου
Πάρε με, πάρε με
Έλα πάρε με
Και στην αγκαλιά σου μέσα
Βαλε με, βάλε με
Έλα βάλε με
Έλα βάρκα να με πάρεις
Πάρε με πάρε με
Έλα πάρε με
Σε νησιώτικο λιμάνι
Βγάλε με βγάλε με
Έλα βγάλε με
Romanised lyrics:
Armenáki ímai kirá mou
Páre me, páre me
Éla páre me
Kai stin angaliá sou mésa
Vale me, vále me
Éla vále me
Éla várka na me páris
Páre me páre me
Éla páre me
Se nisiótiko limáni
Vgále me vgále me
Éla vgále me
English translation:
Armenaki (a sort of boat) I am, my dear,
Take me, take,
Come take me,
And put me inside your arms,
Put me inside your arms,
Come, boat, and take me,
Take me,
To an island port take me,
Come and take me,
The lyrics are very hard to translate for a non-Greek speaker so if any of my Greek subscribers has a better translation, don't hesitate to write them down in the comments and I'll update the description.

Your voice and Greek pronunciation are great as usual, the video is also beautiful (and yes, the time of the year you chose is a big reason for why the experience of visiting Thira/Santorini was better). One thing I remember from another one of your videos (maybe Taverns of Elunda?) is your comment on Greek and Iranian santouri actually sounding slightly different if you're listening carefully (or something to that effect). Would you be interested in making a video on the subject? I find your videos to be so explanatory and good for learning music-related stuff.

Your shots of the sea (especially during sundown/sunrise), the shot at around 2:30 with your silhouette and the warm colours in the background, and the man in the traditional clothing, are some of the many beautiful shots of this video. You are a wonderful photographer, a skill of yours that I believe often gets less attention than your great musical abilities, but is no less impressive.

I'm not a native Greek but I know the language, and while I don't know what to make of the first verse with that είμαι, Αρμενάκι is I kind of boat, so the rest of the song gives the impression of being sung to a boat (or sailor, metaphorically), figurative or otherwise, asking it to take the singer afar. Nice version, I love Greek folklore.

Amazing production as usual. Makes me excited to visit my family's home of Mytilene next year. Lesvos was under Ottoman control until 1915, and culturally there is some Turkish influence on the island. Since you do both Greek and Turkish music it would be cool if you did something from Lesvos. My family also lived in Eyvali before the war, which used to be a Greek town. I remember hearing some old folk Greek/Turk hybrid music when I was a kid but I've forgotten what it was called now.

@@faryafaraji It is actually unrelated to the word Armenia. Instead, the noun "ármeno" and the verb "armenìzo" literally mean "to sail". In the other words, the loose translation for Armenãki would be "little sailor". My guess is that etymologically, the word comes from 'armôs" which like "harmony", it means "to bind" or "to hold together". Greetings from Heraclion, Crete...

The name Armenia was given to the country by the surrounding states, and it is traditionally derived from Armenak or Aram (the great-grandson of Haik's great-grandson, and another leader who is, according to Armenian tradition, the ancestor of all Armenians).

I did one Morroccan song, but as for why, it’s simply because I’m not used to the language yet so I can’t sing it as well, but I’m working on it
