After 4 months of work it is finally done! This is my second major 3D printing project. I present in this video the Armidale Patrol Boat from the Royal Australian Navy. This 50 inch long boat (1.3m) was printed on my Creality Ender 3 3D printer. I hope you enjoy the video and let me know if you have any questions about the build!

WOW. I live in Darwin Northern Australia and used to work at Coonawarra naval base doing maintenance on the Armidales. That model is spot on. I don't miss working on them vessels. One time I went out in sea state two with the harbor closed due to a cyclone. That's when I knew I had sea legs. Very rough conditions. Some of the Navy folk were green 😂😂. Nice work 👍🏻.

Should make the cannons shoot little pellets or something, haha. Though probably not practical at this scale. Would be cool though. Always wanted a remote control boat that had a vertical missile launcher that launched model rockets. Ha I made model airboats as a kid, bought the engines, bent the aluminum on my dad's break and bought some little metal rods and servos from a model shop to make the rudder controls. Was cool. Forgot what happened to it.

Hi Jonny, this is very cool. Some guys on our RC boat club have experimented with micro rockets from Germany. They are much smaller than the Estes engines for large rockets. They designed ships rockets launchers. Unfortunately what they did is not on RU-vid. Thanks for sharing your experience!

A very nice model, I appreciate you sharing this cos I was wondering how a 3d printed boat would be to build and what it would run like. Has an unusual noise from motors, perhaps they need to be made more sound proofed, maybe add true boat sounds.

Very cool project. I just picked up a 3d printer (Prusa i3 MK3S) and would love to print a ship model. I have been looking at that model for a while now. I am happy to see someone that put in the equipment as well. This helps answer a few questions that I had as well. Do you cover what you had to do to make it waterproof as well in the other video?
@SuperdanTech
@SuperdanTech 5 лет назад
I may talk about that in my next video this spring. Some people would cover the outside with fiberglass. I did not want to do that. Instead I use Testor glue on the joints inside to make sure they were shut. Then I used Tamyia putty on the outside joints. Finally I put 10 coats of paint to seal potential very small holes in the print. I left the boat in the bathtub for 1 hour and no leaks. If your prints are good, you should not have to use fiberglass. Good luck if you decide to print this boat. It is an awesome project. I am adding lights next winter! Thanks for watching!

Looks good. I have a question. In this video, I found that your boat hull thickness is quite thin - looks like couple of millimeters. Is that enough to sustain lateral pressure on hull in the water? Why I'm asking is - I'm building Korean navy's 63m long patrol boat in 1/100 scale. Her hull was 3D printed with ABS, thickness was 3mm and there is no longitudinal reinforcement. When I grab the hull for handling, I could hear very small layer breaking sound on it. So I decided to change the hull structure design in next time.
@SuperdanTech
@SuperdanTech 5 лет назад
The hull is thick enough for this length and the total weight. I had no problem bolting the pieces together and no breaking sound at all. I used PLA for mine, I would think ABS would be stronger. I used several layers of primer and paint to ensure the hull would be water tight. I put it in the bathtub with weight for 30 minutes to be sure. No problem at all in my case. However, if the print quality is not very good, I can easily envision potential problems with layers breaking apart or water leaks. Thank you for visiting my channel.

@SuperdanTech

Thank you. The small parts like the fence were printed at a resolution of 0.2 on my Ender 3 printer. Sometimes I did have problems with the fences, like the ends not sticking properly, but I increased my bed temperature to 60 degrees and I was able to print all the fences. @SuperdanTech
@SuperdanTech 4 года назад
Thanks, this was a big project for sure. To scale down the parts, I just did it in Cura using the scale icon on the left. When I needed to add strength or make a hole bigger, I used Tinkercad. If I was doing this again, I think I would use Fusion360. Much more accurate. Thank you for visiting my channel.

@SuperdanTech What plastic did you use?
@SuperdanTech
@SuperdanTech 3 года назад
This was in my early days of 3D printing. If I was doing this model again I would probably use a plastic that is more resistant to heat. When I run the boat on the lake, the sun tends to soften the superstructure...not good! Thank you for visiting my channel.
@lunde28
@lunde28 3 года назад
What filament did you use? Ordinary PLA or ABS? I see that you experience that the plastic turns soft in hot weather. And what typica thicknesses of hull, superstructure etc.?
@SuperdanTech
@SuperdanTech 3 года назад
I used ordinary PLA. Like I say in the video I bought the files and reduced the scale to be able to print with my Ender 3 printer. So the thickness was dictated by the files and in some cases I had to glue side "beam" to reinforce some parts. But overall the thickness is around 2.0 mm with the hull being thicker towards the bottom. Thanks for watching!

There is a lot to learn in 3D printing. Get a cheap printer first to learn, something like the Ender 3 Pro. Then watch some videos about Cura settings. Cura is a good software to start with. I have a video about good settings for the Ender 3 printer. Take your time and start printing small pieces (look at my video on the chess set) maximum 3 hours of print time, this way if something goes wrong with the print, you won't waste too much plastic. Use PLA to start with, cheaper and it does not smell in the house. Like I said, there is a lot to learn at the beginning. Watch a few videos, that will help a lot. Good luck with this fun hobby!

Does the 550 motors are ok with a boat that long? No overheating? I don't see any cooling for motors in your build. I'm asking because I'm building this ship by myself. It will be 1m long and I wonder what motors should I use in it.. Guys from local RC store suggested minimum class 700 motors...
@SuperdanTech
@SuperdanTech 2 года назад
The two 550 are perfect for my boat, which is about 48 inches long. If your boat is 39 inches long, I would stay with the 550. There is no overheating issue. The hull also acts as a loud speaker case, which simulate the noise of the real boat, which is pretty cool. This was not an easy 3D printing project! Thank you for visiting my channel.
