+S.D.Photography yes cleaning the rim first must be prio 1 since otherwise you just trap the dirt inside the compund. after a few days mine didnt look so bad anymore and the effect made them much easier to wash for a couple of weeks atleast. i only used about 1 can for about 12 rims so you dont need 2 cans per 4.
