The Custodes are a *whole* different ballpark from the Astartes. Whereas a Space Marine is, for all intents and purposes, mass produced super-soldiers, the Custodes were literally hand crafted by the Emperor himself from birth.

Yes, there's no gene enhancement, therapies or implantation. Custodes are pretty much molded down to the genetic, if not, atomic level.

Yeah, they are arguably the oldest creations of the Emperor, his personal companions. They are known to have appeared even during the earliest events of the Unification Wars. Custodes are more akin to Primarchs than astartes in that they were individually hand-crafted from the ground up rather than recruited. I doubt there even was a standardized creation process.

This is true, and it has historic parallels. If we consider the classical knightly tale of the questing knight, he's almost invariably described as "solitary." At the same time, it is understood by the audience at that time that he's not actually alone; he has his retinue. This amounts to numerous servants, one or two squires, his wife perhaps, her maidservant, a falconer, a cook, and so on. Also, as mentioned, the fortress worlds needs a pool of humans to recruit from. The larger that population is, the more suitable candidates are likely to emerge.

the armor is nervous system linked via the black carapace which is essentially an organ that's implanted later on basically they flay the aspiring space Marine and then put that layer of cabling black fibrous cabling underneath it and then restitch the skin back on (sometimes the black carapace which can be defect and doesn't work it's also a extra layer of protection similar to highly advance kevlar tendrils) and the tendrils are retractable and can disconnect from the armor.

Regarding the chapters getting their own planet, they weren't always the ONLY ones on those planets. The planets would often be used to recruit from and would sometimes help dictate the chapter's traditions and personal combat styles. Examples would be Fenris(Space Wolves) is a frozen wasteland on one side and boiling oceans on the other, and Baal(Blood Angels) is comparable to Mad Max in some cases. Both are extremely harsh and dangerous planets that result in high quality recruits, they are also the homeworld of their founding Primarchs. Others have planets that are bordering on a death sentence for anyone other than a Space Marine, meaning that no one else can live there even if they wanted to and the Imperium gave them the ok to colonize it. Some are also Fleet-based meaning that they have no planet and everything is done within their chapter's fleet, their recruits usually come from a small list of colonized planets that are usually very difficult and dangerous to live on. These planets are chosen because the fleet chapter doesn't have the option of providing a harsh environment on a homeworld so they need them "pre-adapted" so to speak. Every chapter has different traditions and methods of recruitment as a result of their combat styles, whether they're plant-based or fleet-based, if they are planet based it's based on how dangerous that planet is or if the recruits are locals or come from other planets. There are so many different ways that recruitment works that you could make up the recruitment methods of a chapter to be nothing but full on torture and it would make sense.

Psychology of Space Marines: you might at first think that space marines are just hand waved as being impervious to the horrors of war, but they are not. They are just extremely resistant to it. A good example is the Iron Warriors before the heresy. They were the best siege experts in the galaxy, so they were continuously used for that role. While other legions raced across the stars, conquering planets and getting all of the honors, the iron warriors stayed behind and ground stubborn planets to dust. The constant strain and high casualties of siege warfare made the Iron Warriors extremely dour and cold. It didn’t help that when they found their primarch, he pretty much told them that they weren’t good enough. Eventually, this broke the legion, and they fragmented into pieces, first turning on the emperor, and then each other.

Grey Knights are Astartes, the only difference between them and the rest of the chapters is where their geneseed is from. As for the Custodes, only up until recently have they become a fighting force again. For the last 10,000 years, they've been inside the Palace and very rarely did they leave. As for some of your other questions/statements, here's a bit of info. The final geneseed organ, called the Black Carapace, allows the Space Marine's armor to interface with him and it acts more like a second skin. Anyone can use power armor, but they're generally slow and clunky. A Space Marine moves as if he's wearing nothing. As for a planet for 1000 men, they need to recruit and the planet will usually be where they do so. If it's 1 in a million men can become an Astartes, they need the numbers. And usually the planet is a terrible place to live, to provide th best possible recruits.
@Mamurai
@Mamurai 3 года назад
That is true, but I suppose the focus here are on "normal" Space Marine creation, and the Grey Knights are special snowflakes in that regard. As for the Custodes they are custom made by the Emperor like super cars, and their process of being created is therefore not the same at all.

@Combat Veteran Reacts To a point, the powered armour plate is connected to the warrior on a semi biological level. They are literally plugged into the suit. On the body of the Marine are multiple ports that link into the central nervous system. He thinks, there for it moves. Or he can see it or smell it. Its called the Black Carapace. It is a near bullet proof subdermal skin implant that covers the whole of the body on maturation. This is a second comment. Something that isn't worthy of a video, but might be interesting to you. "Space Marine Markings"... Hopefully one of the first hits on google (image search) is a list of some of the symbols used on their armor. Not all artists know these things well. But when they do, we tend to notice it. This is just a small one that isn't generally listed. Space Marines (non-chaos) have their chapter on their Left shoulder, and their "role" on their Right shoulder. Knowing just this can give you some insight into the chapters "Black Templar" and "Deathwatch". (I'm sure if you ever ask for it, you can get sources for more of this, and similar things)

Short answer? At the end of their training they get one last gene seed called the Black Carapace that is put under their skin. It grows there and links with their nerves and access ports are cut into them to link to their armor. Prior to this they can use a form of armor, Scout Armor, which is not powered but it gets them used to it. Now, not all of the Chapters have the same gene seeds - some are missing some entirely (the one that lets them spit venom or acid is one that fades in and out) - and I think one or two of the successor chapters don't have the Black Carapace gene seeds.

Astartes homeworlds are not only populated by Space marines, there are regular humans managing lots of menial jobs and basic infrastructure, and tech priests doing mechanical work. It's just that the Space marine chapter functions as the planetary government of that planet, and the chapter master is the planetary governor. Also, sometimes the "homeworld" for a chapter is a smaller celestial body, like a moon, or an asteroid. Some Astartes chapters based entirely within orbital or free roaming spacecraft as well.

Yep, they fight just fine without the armor on (minus the benefits of having the armor on of course). Out of combat they go around unarmored typically. As it's been said they interface directly through their black carapace implant to the armor. Humans without the implant wear power armors time to time but don't have the response time/control Marines do due to a lack of direct interface. They can stomp around, punch, shoot etc but don't have the second skin feel Marines have with their power armor. Full fledged marines who lead Scout Marines (who haven't undergone the full organ implanting process, especially the Carapace for the armor interface) regularly enter combat without a full set of armor on. They wear just the chest piece like the scouts/trainees wear.

The codex Astartes is both a book of both rules and regulations, but also book of doctrine and strategy, there is 16 solutions for every problem roboute guilliman could think of. It was supposed be a baseline so that way chapter masters could develop new strategies off it. But some chapters and space marines take it too seriously. Captain Titus of the ultramarines said it's was less a book of regulations and more a book of guidelines, half of the chapter being very strict on it. One chapter was destroyed by elder xenos because of how strict they were. Other chapters were a lot less favorable of it including the space wolves and the black templars who followed it only through a loophole so they could recruit above the 1000 space marines per chapter rule.

The nurture probably played as much, if not more of a part in their ‘instability’ as their nature. Space Marines prefer to recruit from worlds that already have a martial or combat bent, and it was said before though kind of dropped by the wayside that some chapters (and even legions before) would recruit from the most brutal and violent criminals on penal worlds.

The armor does in fact interface directly with their body through an implant call the black carapace. Visually they are several black ports that have pushed through the skin. A space marine's already impressive strength is augmented by electrically driven artificial bundles of muscle, the black carapace allowing the marine to use the electric muscles as if they were a natural part of their body. This is usually what accounts for a marine's impressive agility despite wearing a suit that makes them the equivalent of a tank. Should the power to the muscles fail a marine can still use his armor, albeit at a reduced capacity as his natural muscle is now bearing the weight of the ceramite plates.

I think the best explanation of the difference between Astartes and Custodes is this: an Astartes is a sword produced with a mold by an apprentice, while a Custodian is a masterwork handcrafted spear produced by a true master of his craft

The Custodes are made through a completely different process, a good way to think about it is that the Custodians are each an individual masterpiece of genetic engineering, where as the space marines represent the ability to mass produce super soldiers, the imperium has 1000 space marine chapters and assuming they are all following the codex astartes and each have 1000 space marines, the imperium would have around 1 million space marines, That also does not include the traitor marines, the custodes always have and always will be the 10,000

a note about the Thunder Warriors, the talk of stability has to do more with enhancing performance at the cost of lifespan a Thunder Warrior would, without external support, only live for a couple decades, built given they spent those decades in heavy heavy combat that time was moot. in Stargate SG-1 there was a warrior caste called the Kull Warriors that had a similar principle. their physiology was so jacked their lifespan was mere months

So yes the Space Marines armor is connected to their nervous system via the Black Carapace which is why they can move so fluidly with the armor system. When it comes to the whole waste excretion thing a Space Marine is perfectly capable of dropping a log all on his own, but what the power armor allows them to do is take their waste and recycle it into nutrients that are then injected into the Marine making them have to ingest food and water much less frequently in the field. Also with the whole genitals thing my personal opinion/head cannon is that while they have all the proper piping to use them they've been subjected to so many chemical treatments that theres no way it all still works.
@arly803

my understanding is that the armor is just armor and it can be removed for servicing at no physiological inconvenience to the marine. But while worn, it does capture and reprocess any waste from the marine's body (urine, sweat, feces) to reclaim the water.

20:32 I think that’s also why Astartes are, almost by design, a separate warrior caste. They -can’t- go back to normal society, one because they’re no longer quite human, and two they have to witness and inflict some of the most horrific and gruesome violence one could see. There’s horrors that individual marines have seen that would break even the strongest warrior today, or even a guardsman (see the daemonculaba, or don’t) and yet they keep going out of an indoctrinated sense of duty and purpose. A space marine committed to a task WILL succeed or WILL die trying.

20:30 I cant reference it but early lore, like a timetable for marines that aren't on assignment blowing something up said they spend 23.99 hours a day praying, practicing, or being hypno-indoctrinated/mindwiped with 5 minutes of free time they can dedicate to something productive or virtuous of their own free will, like extra prayers or reading. Which is actually war more grim dark than most takes in current 40k. Your whole chapter of 1000 super soldiers are constantly being killed and replaced. But you replace them and the new guy that sits down in the brother Landis hypnobooth is the one that is called brother Landis now. Like maybe the chapter master and chaplains or medics know what's going on but everyone else are just literally cogs that get replaced constantly with fresh bodies but the institutional memory of the chapter removes all their individuality

Space marine armor is directly connected to their nervous system through an organ called the black carapace. They can engage in combat and survive outside of their armor for extended periods of time. Therefor I believe they can excrete normally but it’s not something that is brought up often. Some background on “the age of strife” that was mentioned in passing. At the most bare bones all interstellar travel became impossible for a long period of time. At the same time many planets did not independently produce enough resources or food to support their full population including earth. (Imagine New York City becoming isolated and needing to support itself for years) thus the majority of societies collapsed and huge amounts of info and technology were lost. Even in the 10k years later not all the lost planets have been found.

Connects is via the black carapace. This is a semi-organic polymer layer added under the skin to bridge the induction ports mounted in the skin to the armor. It is possible some of the abdomen ports include functions to handle waste excretion in armor. It is worth noting that in the Horus heresy books the marine barracks include showers and latrines. I can’t imagine why these ships abs bases would include a latrine if the marines literally didn’t need it. As to sex…one of the most famous space wolves literally goes out wenching after his first deployment. Like goes out and gets laid, and one of his fellows kinda gives him a look over it, but doesn’t press the matter. The general impression I’ve always had is that Marines are fully intact and likely even functional. They just don’t care. To them a woman’s beauty is like the beauty of a finely crafted Bolter or work of art. That being said, I’ve seen one flirt, once again Horus Heresy Novel. He was doing so expressly because of his opinion the woman he was speaking to would respond favorably and it was achieve his machinations quickly. Also, unless the emperor’s children regrew them after their fall, which is possible, then they certainly still have the plumbing and it’s all still hooked up. I’m inclined to suspect it works Becuase none of the EC where shocked, they just where surprised by how fun it was.

Leutin09 is a great channel. You might want to look up his titan or give city videos next. Custodies, yes. Grey knights are space marines though. Just a special group. Gene seed is likely a combination of gene alteration, nano tech, and possibly warp sorcery. This is because there are a few more mechanical sounding organs, and some hints here and there to some supernatural element. They have an organ that allows them to interface with their power armor like a second skin, meaning that they can ignore most of the safety things that normal humans require to not hurt themselves, and are not clumsy with it. That said, they are not dependent on it to survive. Just to not get shot. There has been some instances of space marines breeding with humans, but the offspring was purely human. The Emperor wanted to make sure that the Imperium belonged to humanity, not trans/human super soldiers. The custodies were there, but were a small elite force. You could not make a proper army out of them, nor are they made to properly work as a large army. The thunder warriors were more powerful than a space marine, but had a few problems like spontaneously dying or insanity. The way I understand it (no expert) Sociopath: no empathy or remorse. Psychopath: illogically violent. I think you are right. Those things are different (those two types of violence). There is actually no known life span for a space marine. They all just eventually die violent deaths. The imperium actually did a ton of stuff to try and prevent future Horus Heresies. Things like fire-walling the naval (space) and ground forces of the imperial guard, and possibly the mechanics as well (or at least the Titans). Also, all but the most loyal and tested imperial guard regiments are not allowed to have combined arms anymore. This way, it is easier to counter them should they turn traitor. And finally, they introduced the commissars (if they were not already a thing) to ensure loyalty, bravery, and competency of the guard one way or another. The space marines do not just have the entire planet to themselves, unless it was uninhabited before. It’s just a base of oppositions. They could only interact with the locals for things like recruitment and supplies, out right rule the planet, or anywhere in between. They can also bed fleet based and move around. One problem with space marine gene seed is that it is asexual reproduction (sort of, the base human was made normally). That means any mutation or defects will be passed down if that gene seed isn’t taken out of circulation if you will. Which is tough because they have to wait for new gene seed, or dip into reserves if they have any.

13:37 The Astartes aren't affected biologically when it comes to emotions, temperament, and especially personality. etc. It is just *so* ingrained in them, by hypnosis, the Ecclesiarchy, etc. to serve the emperor that, generally apart from chaos influence/warpfuckery, an Astartes would never even think about hurting a fellow battle brother, or betraying the emperor. They are conditioned in MANY ways to endure the physiological and mental hardships of being an Astartes. As for the Thunder warriors (The one they were mentioning), They were created for one single purpose, War. Since the Empire of Man didn't exactly know how those first gene warriors would be, they posed a serious risk to themselves and others, and were thus very unstable. Its between the Skins and muscles and connectors apears on the thing, like USb ports if you will, that lets a MArine connect Neuraly to his armor. Making the Marine and the Armor one seemless unit, wich allows the marines to get the absolut maximum output of their Power Armors, and having the Armors in turn boosting further the allready formidable natural capabilities of the Marines. But even without a Power Armor, a SPace Marine can still easly, even barehanded kill dozens if not more of foes. The "1000 people on a planet" implies that they have a lot of normal people in their service to run facilities/ships and logistics but nobody ever talks about the housecleaners in 40k :-). They also have people from the Mechanicus or other factions there, so this starts to become the size of an organization/state instead of just 1000 dudes sitting in a castle. The recruiting worlds often are pretty inhospitable which works as a pre-selection. One book about the Dark Anegsl describes that a primitive tribe prepared his young men for the test when the Space Marine gods come. The chapter sends a chaplain and the young people do some dangerous hunting/fighting until very few remain as candidates. The winners are then taken one by one to a tomb and the chaplain told them that they did well and that one final test will be done which will be so painful that they may ask for being killed if they cannot bear it and that this is not shameful for them or their families. They got some injection (was it something in relation to geneseed?) or so, cannot remember - but those who suffered too much were killed by the chaplain and buried in the tomb. The others were taken to the ship to see the stars and to never return. I'd like to know how long it takes to teach these people everything important about the universe though. They don't even know what a toaster is but should end up with enough knowledge and intelligence that they themselves could run a state of humans, which is what some of the fallen Dark Angels did, Primarch-style. Selecting people just because they are strong sounds kind of dumb.

The custodes are the custodes. And the space marines are the space marines. The custodes can not be classified as space marines because they are individually too special and unique. Think of it this way would you put guardsmen and space marines in the same category. Another (and more in-depth) example is that in every chapter there is a chapter master (it is the highest rank given to the stongest and bravest of all space marines in that chapter) even he would struggle to fight a custodian, but it is not impossible for him to win as well. The origins of the Custodes are unclear, though early accounts from the Terran Unification Wars assert that the Custodes were around even before the Thunder Warriors, always guarding the Emperor. The theory goes that the Custodes came first, and the Thunder Warriors were an early attempt at simplifying the process for mass production. They succeeded in that regard, and many sources claim that the Thunder Warriors surpassed both the Custodes and the Astartes in terms of raw strength, but they were physically and mentally unstable, being prone to psychotic breaks and sudden organ failure. To that end, the Emperor created the Primarchs as imperfect copies of himself and based the template for the Space Marines on them. This development allowed the Space Marines to be mass produced with little inherent defects, and created 21 generals who surpassed the Custodes and the Thunder Warriors both physically and mentally, thus making them second only to the Emperor himself. There were complications later on, but that was mostly the result of external factors, like the Chaos Gods corrupting the Primarchs and their Gene-seed, creating mutations that spread across the Legions physically and psychically and made them more susceptible to the influence of Chaos and the Dark Gods. There were also other factors, like terrorist attacks on the Gene-seed stores on both Terra and Luna, experiments and modifications done before, during, and after the Horus Heresy thay lead to various strains of Space Marines, like the Raptors, but mostly ended in causing long-term damage to the Gene-seed samples that only became evident centuries or millennia later, most famously during the 21st Founding, better known as the Cursed Founding, although this was mostly due to experiments carried out by the Adeptus Biologis wing of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Ironically enough, Guilliman is actually to blame for a lot of this, as he issued a decree as the de facto Lord Commander of the Imperium after the Horus Heresy to hasten Gene-seed cultivation to recoup the losses suffered by the Loyalists Space Marines during the Heresy, but this rushed cultivation period ultimately lead to many of the long-term complications, such as several organs implanted during the conversion process atrophying to tge point of uselessness, such as the Betcher's Glands.

If u look at how normal(ultramarine) space marine chapter structure & its each company structure, they actually a bit more than 1k astartes inside 1 chapters...

Whether or not a space marine is castrated will in all likelihood vary from chapter to chapter based upon tradition. In any case, they will have mechanism for discarding biological waste, but due to their efficient metabolism they dont need to do it nearly as often as normal humans. Furthermore, their suits come with specialized recycling systems that can re-use waste and extend their effective operating times with no nutrient intake by frankly ludicrous amounts, literally years. Their armor does integrate with their biology, via the "Black Carapace", a special sub-dermal fullbody implant that allows their suit to perfectly monitor the marine's entire biology, and allows the marine to control their armor as if it was literally a second set of skin and muscles, including artificial nerve endings. For a space marine, the armor *is* their body. That said, they can certainly operate without it, at reduced capacity (but still far beyond normal humans). However the donning and removing of power armor can take a very long time unless it is heavily damaged, as it requires extensive mechanicus blessings to allow the machine spirit to function properly as well as careful management of its connection with the black carapace.

I don't know if it would hit too close to home or a social faux pas to ask, but could you react to baldemort's iron warriors video. I want to hear your opinion of them. For context, they had horrific attritional warfare that "dehumanized" them (if that is the right word for it when they are Astartes, but I digress) and they had to deal with the ancient practice of decimation. I am a Pharmacologist (different from a pharmacist think more research-oriented) and I have seen through my research 2nd or 3rd hand how horrific that is for the human psyche. I would sincerely appreciate hearing your opinion as an actual soldier/officer. It's hard to really understand some psychiatric patient's problems and create medication for them when you have the capacity to help (medical knowledge), but lack the context or life experience to comprehend and therefore try to match what exactly a patient needs to the chemicals/substances which might induce the desired effect. I apologize for the long-winded comment and question which will probably be buried in the comments section anyway, but it would be an interesting reaction and educational for me.

just wanted to nerd-clarify that nucleotides are the building blocks of DNA & RNA, and amino acids are the building blocks of proteins! love your energy and thought process, and that you know when you don't know something-- that is really critical. Just got to the end, and wanted to add that genes that "destabilize" might be analogous to elements called "pseudogenes", which typically appear at first glance to encode a protein, but in reality cannot be expressed due to lacking critical elements (proper start/stop sites or lack of transcriptional enhancer sites, etc.) Some of these are mutated copies of other genes that never made it to full protein-coding status, while others can be genes that used to be expressed in common ancestors, but then lost their coding ability so that they're e.g. not actually expressed in humans. In W40K, the process of genetic selection and drift might be shaped by the Warp/Chaos Energy (genes accelerated to non-functionality or introduction of "corruptive" genes) or the Emperor/gene seed caretakers (magical/mythical protection against genetic degradation, introduction of novel genes, or reactivation of latent genes) perhaps.

26:35 I think Lutin gets into it later but there are certain genetic aberrations that certain chapters face. Just to name two, Salamanders have something wrong with their Melanochrome, so they’re always very dark skinned, and Space Wolves have something so wrong with their gene seed that they can’t have successor chapters as any attempts ended up with what are known as Wolfen, genetic mutants unsuitable for anything but brutal skirmishing.

yea space marines even without armor and weapons are still tough and strong enough to beat down anyone who thinks they are no longer a threat. when they are not in a war they are often back home in fortress monasteries where they train and chill, often wearing robes and trying to stay comfortable while being looked after by their serfs. space marines are even encouraged to sleep. while they can go prolonged periods of time without it thanks to having brain similar to some lizards, they can shut down some parts of it at a time without it effecting the whole, this does have a negative effect on the long run so they take few hours of actual sleep daily. despite their inability to dream. they do eat good food while at home as well, even alcohol is served. but its only for flavor because their over working bodies prevent intoxication. the ones who are being forged into space marines eat less complex foods, often jelly like substance with lots of nutrition value to encourage their physical mutation, but simple enough not to cause digestive track issues. because you just got your stomach held open by metal claws while some guys rearranged room to fit in extra organs.

Space Marines are totally fine out of armor. They wouldn't want to fight without it, but they can and will if needed. When used he armor is connected to their nervous system, but it's not a permanent connection.

1:40 - Yeah, but the Custodes aren't "Humanity"'s, they're the Emperor's and the Palace's alone, and the Grey Knights are there to handle threats that get humanity mind-wiped if they survive. Statement stands. 4:39 - Yep, full marks! They were around from around 312 BC to 63 BC, following Alexander's establishment of the Macedonian Empire. They were contemporary with the Roman Republic.

The Custodes are *not* a fighting force. Sure, they may work currently work alongside armies and did so during the Great Crusade - but they took on a more bodyguard/command cadre type of role. They hung around a singular individual and, if things looked like they may threaten Terra, and thus the Emperor, then they may strike out. But you'll never see the Custodes themselves going on crusades or operations themselves otherwise. They are purely a defensive force.

Yup to the generation after generation being in the military. I am 4th or 5th generation to have served but only the 3rd generation to have fought in a war and, that is as far as I have managed to dig up but likely further back family has served. So I agree.

10:00 The question if a spacemarine can fight without power armor, yeah, some fresh space marines are sent out without powerarmor because of supply issues. But they do have organce like the black carapace that are directly interfacing with the armor in some manner. It's like the troops in iraq in early 2000 there was not enoguh body armor for all of them so some where deployed without all the bodyarmor.

In order to be a space marine, you also have to be able to continue while your suit is non functioning (ie strong enough to still preform the job efficiently and effectively while carrying all the dead weight as if it where mostly functional).

So im not entirely familiar with the black carapace but as far as I know (which is limited as ive been starting my 40k binge with the Heresy series) I havent seen any reference to the armor interacting with the marine on a biological level. Now thats standard power armor, there IS a variant that a severly wounded marine can be placed in that assists in life support and allow one to continue to fight. From what I remember this variant is much larger and has incredibly devastating weapons grafted to it, making a marine a sort of mobile tank.

yes space marines are physically connected to their armor the black carapace is implanted under their skin and from where it is implanted grows out and merges with his nervous system, the black carapace has connector pins sticking out of the flesh to connect to the armor so that the armor reacts as fast as their musculature they also can activate helmet systems by thought alone if they are using the older, better suits of armor the more modern, less advanced helmets usually react to things like voice commands, tongue movements or blinking but the armor beyond the connections to the black carapace, is actually quite primitive in how it is attached to the body clasps and bolts mostly a marine is perfectly capable of completely removing his armor on his own without needing any machining done, tho most chapters have serfs to assist in doing it faster and incanting the blessings putting on or removing the armor is a long process tho, similar to putting on old japanese armor or full plate most marine will just carry the weight and fight on in the armor instead of spending the time to take it off in battle a marine definitely doesnt need his armor to relieve himself but there might be some tubes inserted because some of the waste a body excretes needs more filtering then sweat to be recycled and used to fill nutrient supplies so you probably want it to go onto a separate path of filtering the temporary-ness of the thunder warriors wasnt about genetic stability they where humans turned up to 1000, their brains their muscles their nervous system but they wert fine tuned to deal with it, their minds whernt included dealing with their bodies caused mental problems, ptsd, nervous ticks, violent outbursts they got extra intelligence from the adaptation, but they whernt made to deal with it, it was basically a human mind but smarter and that was it they couldnt deal whit what they had become, some describing the world as forever moving in slow motion as their mind tried and failed to comprehend their own reaction speed each of their minds tried to figure out a way to deal with it, each failed, their abilities drove them insane even if they didnt start as predisposed to violence, the horror of daily life in such a body broke them down the entire planet isnt given to the space marines but they are exempt from the imperial tithe of guardsmen, most do have a planetary defense force but its often not necessary as the chapter doesnt really allow its home world to be threatened most space marine planets are also not of immense value, often being very savage worlds chapters like the salamanders export a lot of metals as the tectonic instability provides a lot of ore once the rock cools, but a world like fenris is generally useless instead of the guard these worlds send their young fit men to be tested for getting into the marines, a lot of them die sickle cell anemia is more common in africans but yea every human group has its own specific medical problems and needs, while generally frowned apon acknowledging it, we are very different the gene destabilization of the geneseed is less natural selection and more that the geneseed doesnt just adjust its hosts genes but also absorbs them and integrates them into its own coding so they are passed on to the next generation combine that with the insular populations of the planets marines are recruited from, the compounding of some genetic traits in the specific geneseed from their primarch, and in some cases the genetic manipulation done to people during the dark age of technology to make colonizing of unpleasant planets possible and even the effects of the environment for example the salamanders have evolved to be almost completely invulnerable to fire as generations of geneseed had to adjust its hosts body to the deadly radiation of their homeworld that is so deadly their skin turns from a pale human to the charcoal black as a marine the marines of the space wolves meanwhile can no longer use real humans to make their marines as generations of using the subhuman mutants of fenris who have significant amounts of wolf genetics to survive their world has corrupted their geneseed when the space wolves tried to do a second founding, the geneseed reacted badly with real humans resulting in a lot of tentacle mutations and rampant tumor growths, they kindof got themselves into a genetic dead end for some its also just degradation, the loss of special abilitys by mixing in too much human with the primarch genes that made marines possible in the first place just millenia of the geneseed absorbing a little human and losing a little marine in the process its not a massive effect so far, only resulting in the loss of the belchers gland in the ultramarines, its the organ that lets them spit acid not a massive deal in combat but it did help marines that got captured in the great crusade
