ILFORD Photo is proud to share the 4th video in our #MyFilmStory series
This time, we meet Aron Aguilera as he shares his story about learning to shoot and develop black and white film while in isolation.
Aron, originally from Chile, is currently a student of visual communication and digital media in Florence, Italy. Having previously graduated in Business he has worked as a Marketing Manager for the last 5 years.
"I always wanted to explore further and challenge myself to be a creator, to have a better understanding of visual communication and photography. A life changing decision".
The last few months have meant huge changes for many people around the world. Aron chose to deal with isolation by learning to shoot and develop black and white film at home.
In this short documentary he shares how this helped him to pass the time in quarantine and narrates how his life and relationship with film photography has been transformed during COVID-19.

I started 'Film Photography' in 1951 ! I am 83 years old now and process all my B&W and most C41 but NOT E6. I am a 4 times CANCER patient since 2004 ( Prostate Cancer Diagnosed ) 2008 Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, 2018 Rectal Cancer and Basal Cell Carcinoma. My Photography , messing about with Old Cameras ( YES -- I have a MINOLTA SR-100X and lenses) and developing FILM keeps my Mind Active and me ALIVE !!

@@Ilfordphoto Yes -- as an 'Impoverished School Boy ' at East Ham Grammar School Photographic Society I used to cycle round Chemist's Shops in Manor Park and East Ham asking " Do you have any Outdated Film I can have for 'Experiments' " and they would sell me ILFORD SELOCHROME ORTHO for 6d ( 2.5 New Pence a 120 roll and I would 'black out' the bathroom with an old Grey Blanket and put some RED PAPER around a 40 W Bulb as I was told 'ORTHO FILM'is not sensitive to RED Light, then'See-Saw the Selochrome through Home-Made Developer as shown by our School Chemistry Master in a dish I used to hatch Frog Spawn in and in which my Mum would make Tapioca Pudding ( Luckily NOT at the SAME TIME as Frog Spawn! ) I thought the 'Greyish Images' I produced were 'The Bees Knees' and it was a big difference when I got a proper Developing Tanks after saving up 27/6d ( £ 1-- 37.5 New Pence) -- I must treat myself to the new ILFORD ORTHO Film !

I’d like to recommend a free film holder for scanning. It might make your life a lot easier. Scanning is the part I hate the most in the process. The model is free as long as you 3D print yourself. For me, it helped tremendously www.kamerakraft.com/film-scanning-carrier

I like photography and have been taking photos since 1977. I got a notification for this video and started to preview it and watching it reminded it of my very first days in film photography in the darkroom developing and printing film. It brought back nice memories. My only criticism and objection is the imagery and words like alchemy consequences and the whole institution and the entire establishment of the "it Is what it is-ers" and find those very masonic and catholic and supernatural and mystic kaballistic; things I loathe and despise and which put me off.

I share the same feeling about film photography. Far different imprevisible and misterious than the ready made digital world. Happy to come back to my films... Soon I´ll transform a little room I got in my house to develop my films myself.

I have begun to since the COVID 19 pandemic has limited my travels. I find that I enjoy the process of shooting film although I do not yet develop my own but that will probably be my next step.

In lockdown its easier to develop film soon after shooting it for me. One advantage. There are not many but this is one. Yesterday I shot a roll of Pan F of my two year old son playing with the water hose in the garden. Simple family activities, captured forever on my 6x7 which I will later look back on with fondness.

What a nice little documentary about your film journey :) Its quite amazing how many actually started shooting film or came back into it again during lockdown. Myself totally unaware of anyone else also had the same kind of journey but never started developing the film. I bought the last film camera i had back when i used to shoot film again now in 2021, the F100 because i never thought id use one again. I also bought a "dream" camera in the Nikon FE2 and i loaded both cameras with some beautiful Trix and Ilford HP5 and felt right at home again. That was just after the pandemic hit, now fast forward and i had this incredible time with shooting film and exploring new film stocks and other cameras. I think its one of the major things i will take away from this period of time, and that is also a positive one. And after my own journey i was amazed finding out so many had the same kind of experience, that they felt the urger to try or start shooting film again :) Lets hope this bubble will go on forever ( not the pandemic but the film bubble ). /Martin.

@@Ilfordphoto I want to. But with this recession I'm stuck with what I have, which is the next best thing, film development chemicals and a scanner. I used to print with the enlarger at school and when that image starts to appear, it's one of the best feelings that I know I could ever experience. Every single time it happens, it's pure joy (never fails). I hope to some day get all those materials and keep the craft alive.

Beautifully made video! Makes me want to start developing my own film again. I stopped analog photography in 2007, but I just bought an old film camera and shot my first film again. Not being able to see your images instantly, makes it a totally different experience. Different but good!

HI ILFORD I HAVE NOTICED THAT THERE IS ZERO MONITRY BENIFIT OF USING BULK HP5 FILM IN INDIA THE COST IS NEARLY SAME IS USED TO BUY HP5 BULK FROM B&h BUT NOW THEY HAVE STOPPED SHIPPING TO INDIA AND ON ADORMA SHIPPING COST IS SAME AS COST OF ILLFORD FILM CAN YOU HELP IN LOWEING THE SHIPPMENT COST?

Плёнку вообще-то подругому вытаскивают. И в темноте заряжают в проявку. Если малоопытный посмотрит ваш видос красивый, то будет разочарован результатом. Да, и в рукомойнике.. Ну это экстрим, или вы его каждый день натираете?
