Demand for curling stones has never been greater. The majority of them are made of granite and from the Scottish island of Ailsa Craig.
World Curling TV’s Alison Walker reports on the evolution of the stone from is origins, to alternative stone materials trialled over the years, to finally the stones we see used at our World Championships and the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Curling stones are truly beautiful. Imagine having a miniature stone as a keychain or for decoration.

There are other granites available, but over the years, Ailsa granite has proved to be the best.

Continually disappointed in the WCF for it's one sided, biased promotion of Kays and Ailsa Craig as the only source of granite used for curling stone manufacturing.

Well WCF only uses Ailsa Craig granite for their stones... do you expect WCF to promote granite they don't use?

@@vuvuzela691 actually yes, I expect the WCF to inform it's membership on all options when it comes to curling supplies and equipment. I expect them to be unbiased and allow countries to use their grant money to purchase supplies and not tell them they can only use the money to buy certain products from certain companies. There is a deep history in the usage of both types of granites for the body of curling stones, tell the whole story.

Personally I don't mind the monopoly, since the stones are natural it's only fair if players around the world can use the same mineral compound to train with. It's not fair economically yes, but until more deposits with matching characteristics are found it's just Ailsa for now. I'm actually quite sure the quarry would be thrilled if more deposits are found, because it means there will be more output and more output means more happy curlers, and more happy curlers means more business!
