Chuck Connors had the most incredible face. I'm mesmerized by his narrow eyes and high cheekbones. and the way he combs his hair. I love the conviction he brings to the role of the "thinking man's lawyer." he's got such integrity. he's 6'5" and Mickey Rooney comes up to his waist.

I see the "Law & Order" link has already been discussed. I first found out about this show from a vintage BOARD GAME of the series. I knew this was the first for Chuck Conners right after "The Rifleman," so I was curious to see him in this. He seemed a bit more relaxed as Lucas McCain, but still did well. Always loved Ben Gazzara. And Mickey Rooney was really quite good here. The script was also great, with a few twists and turns to keep you guessing. Mary Murphy, as Mickey's "wife," was in one of my favorite OUTER LIMITS episodes the very next year. There, she played the wife of an X-15 pilot who gets caught in a time warp when his plane crashes near his army base. Everything around them is moving so slowly, it seems to be frozen. The early 60's seem to be a good time for television scripts! Thanks for making "Arrest & Trial" available.....

I recommend "The Man With the Golden Arm" 1955, an Otto Preminger Film with sound track by Elmer Bernstein, starring Frank Sinatra and Kim Novak. First real depiction of the heroin culture growing in America, and the seedy underground culture that works hard to keep addicts dependent on drugs. Very stark depiction of "cold turkey" by Sinatra.

In retrospect Ben Gazzara improves. He played to his time very well. Very talented player.

A few folk have mentioned this, but I feel this series was far more radical and different. Eg, L&O is about Police investors and their work with Prosectors. There have beenother shows that depict such. But here we have investigation, and then a switch to the perspective of the defence lawyer. The Police and lawyer would in a normal Police show be antagonistic. Here they are friends, the defence and prosecution often work closely together. The accused which in one episode was Sgt Anderson himself, are show in context not simply villians. This is a very different TV show then and now

This TV series like the TV series "Eastside Westside" were both ahead of their time. This was also around the time of "Naked City", and "Johnny Staccato". They were all great TV series. Dig how the cop treats the addict suspects?.....then check out Ben Gazzara's vibe...he is way ahead of this period(early-mid 1960's). This is when I was a kid in NYC.

Ouch. This show touched on what I've seen so far, controversial subjects. Maybe it just wasn't the time slot it was in against ,"wholesome " shows as Bonanza and Ed Sullivan but also the content that the viewers were not willing to engage in why it only lasted 1 season?Idk🤷‍♂️but another great episode. Mr.Neddles? Lol.

@@Baskerville22 you are so right. Ive been around it all my life. Drug addicts only use people who have "compassion" on them. There's only one way to deal with addiction that is tough love. So this is where Dick Wolf got his ideas from. This is before his L&A trilogies
@fromthesidelines
@fromthesidelines 6 лет назад
Yes, this WAS a factor in Wolf's decision to produce a similar series. Would you believe CBS rejected "LAW & ORDER" in 1988 because they said there wasn't a "name actor" in the cast they could promote? Wolf took it to NBC, as part of a deal to produce "NASTY BOYS" in 1990. Well, "NASTY BOYS" (young Las Vegas narcotics officers usually wearing black hoods on the job) lasted 13 episodes.....but "LAW & ORDER" lasted TWENTY YEARS.
@actionsub
@actionsub 6 лет назад
However, when Wolf first pitched Law & Order to Universal TV, the president of Universal TV sat him down to tell him, "uh Dick, we did this 25 years ago..." and showed him an episode of "Arrest & Trial". Wolf decided to tweak the A&T concept a bit to present the DA as the protagonist rather than the usual defense attorney as the lead.
@russellmiles2861
@russellmiles2861 3 года назад
@@actionsub I feel Arrest and Trail is a far deeper story. There are tales within tales; here we have tension of Police methods, drug addition on people and their families, with the addict not looking like addicts. This is like Lenny Bruce were to have written the script. So much deeper than anything L&W offered - which the creators acknowledge was to a formula to avoid offending advertisers. And Micky Rooney’s acting is superb. He was a very big movie star and he guest stars and plays a pathetic drug addict.
