It's worth noting who the real heroes were- The Heptapods. They knew every language before ever coming to Earth- they show as much when they communicated directly with Louise in their side of the spaceship. They also knew that Abbott would be killed by the bomb before they arrived. They came anyway. Knowing the cost.

Knowing her daughter would be with her for such a short amount of time.... and knowing how painfully she would lose her . . . everyday with that child would be a countdown to her last day... literally knowing the day it would happen... it would be emotionally devastating on a daily basis.

But you'd also know every moment of joy. Once you have a non-linear view of time (which knowing the heptapod language creates), you would see everything all at once, and your grief would be tempered with joy (and vice versa).

Everyone talks about Louise and how she feels, but honestly the one i feel bad for is the daughter: she was brought into this world, *knowingly,* by a parent who 100% knew, beyond any doubt, that they would die a horrible, slow death due to unstoppable illness. A parent who's first instinct should be to want to protect their child from any pain. No wonder she said she hated Louise. Now Hannah's own father cant look at her the same or talk to her the same, she's almost lost her dad in a sense since he is separating himself in his pre-grief. To me personally, Its beyond selfish to bring a life into this world that you know will die early and horrific for certain, just so *you* can have your happy memories, while the child knows pain and suffering, as well as her dad being unable to look at her the same, and then death. If I knew before birth that my son would suffer due to an illness, I absolutely wouldn't have brought him into this world just to suffer.

It's interesting watching reactions to this film and how everyone comes to the realization that her daughter's story wasn't a flashback at different times. For me it was when she says "who is this child" inside the ship. It hit me like a lightening bolt - omg this hasn't happened yet. Those aren't flashbacks... they are visions of her future. It feels like every reactor has that epiphany at different parts of the film. It's so interesting how it hits and when for each person.

Language defines our world. Literally. Even our conception of time is heavily influenced by our language. English-speakers for instance do not really think about what it means to have three tenses that situates us in time; by that same token, they often do not realize that not every language have the same relationship to time as english and the romance languages. Naturally some liberties were taken with this movie, but the core thesis remains the same: language and communication do more than transmit information. They are the structures of our thoughts and by extension, what we are and are not capable of conceiving. And Louise, the linguist, is the most aware of this fact. And I would like to point out that it's a very rare alien first contact story that is resolved through communication. More than that, the female lead isn't forced to adopt a male-coded role based on aggression and fighting, but is instead playing to her unique strengths. I mean I love Sigourney Weaver in Alien, but how many similar movies do you know where a female lead doesn't resolve the conflict through large amounts of explosives? Louise shows that female leads can be more than a gender-bent male lead. She's contemplative and decisive, compassionate and firm, and best of all, proof that being willing to talk things through is a strength.

Excellently written! I'm Finnish, but I speak two other languages. Each language has a unique way of describing the reality. For example in Finnish all objects "are". In Dutch objects either sit, lay or stand. It gives the object a more of an active substance. In Finnish it's an existential substance.
@NataliePine

I love this film for being "true" science fiction. There's the layer that deals with the fantastical - spaceships, aliens, seeing the future - and another layer that deals with universal human things - how we communicate, how language shapes our worldview, how we find joy in experiencing life even though we know that death is inevitable. An amazing experience, and it's all held together by a deeply human and relatable character whose choices are beautiful and noble and heartbreaking. Combine that with the acting and the music and it's an instant winner.

I watched this years ago, and I loved it. But it was recently, through several more viewings, that I came to think that maybe the reason for her to give in at the end (and have her child all the same) is that she understood that having Hannah will give her the tools to associate and crack the alien code.

So glad you watched this film! It's one of my all-time favorites. It's just so beautiful and thought-provoking. This is the way I interpret the movie (and I could be wrong, for sure) - but some physicists believe that time is just one HUGE block and all of time exists in this block and EVERYTHING has already happened. WE just experience it linearly. The aliens don't exactly time travel (I mean, yes and no) - they just experience time as it is in this movie and they know the past and the future (because it already exists and in effect, can't really be changed because of this). They experience time non-linearly. Amy's character was experiencing time non-linearly from the beginning of the movie, seeing her future daughter, but not really understanding her "visions". I could go on about free will (or the lack of) and determinism, but it's getting above my pay grade! Glad you loved it. ❤

The brilliant (and pretty damn handsome) director, Denis Villeneuve, plays with our expectations. We assume the loss of Amy Adams' daughter is in the past and it influences how we see her character. At the end Villeneuve shows that Adams' character is richer than many of us can ourselves be for choosing to have a daughter that she knows will die. And the love she and her daughter experience is worth the loss. It's a monumental film in a small, quiet format that simply asks if the ephemeral experience of true love is worth it, knowing that all of us die in the end. And the answer is unequivocally YES! Of course it's worth it.

One of my all-time favorite films. It ALWAYS affects me... even after I KNOW what's going to happen. (Irony!) The title "ARRIVAL" can apply as much to Hannah's imminent arrival as much as the aliens. I also think that Louise, a true hero, probably had her biology changed enough to pass down that "rare disease" to Hannah... She was the only one who was literally inside the alien's atmosphere, so that had to affect her in some way. It's such a beautiful story filled with tragedy, empathy, and ultimately the triumph of knowledge over fear. Since you loved this one, you've got to check out these BRILLIANT films: "PLEASANTVILLE," "STRANGER THAN FICTION," "CHILDREN OF MEN," "GRAVITY," and "AMELIE"... each one of these films has incredible stories, direction, acting, cinematography, and effects. They are all underrated gems. ...and you will never forget any of them, once you see them. CHEERS!!

32:09 i was reminded on my last watch about how louise said the language you speak affects how you see the world. these soldiers have been ‘speaking the language’ of aggression, fear and violence through the media they consume, so every interaction with the heptapods is viewed through that lens and that is why they immediately respond with violence. something that i think is especially pertinent right now in our own world. loved your reaction, and laughed out loud at ‘what if they get test anxiety’ over the math problems. can relate!

Saw you guys post this the other day, and I had only seen a few images or clips of the film and heard generally good things about it. So I decided to watch it at 1:00 am this morning and greatly enjoyed it. It's very simple, largely inexpensive, but is still a great movie. And the twist at the end of the daughter being from memories of the future was great. And the aliens were just cool. And that comes from the fact we still don't really know what they are even by the end of the film. Their ships just evaporate into thin air, and they're gone forever. I guess they also interact with humans again 3000 years in the future because they need their help, but we never see that. Edit: In regards to science fiction, I also just watched The Creator yesterday, and was also quite blown away by it. In fact, my face wss covered in tears at multiple points throughout the film.

You may make all the assumptions your little hearts desire at the beginning. They’re all proved wrong as we progress through the movie. The ‘flashbacks’ aren’t flashbacks, they’re flashforwards. Her daughter, of course, dies in the future, not in the past. At one point she’s reading the book on communication with aliens in the future so she’ll have a better grip on their communication in the ‘now’. Then there’s the general’s phone number, which she doesn’t have until the general gives it to her at the celebration. Now she can call his number in the ‘now’, having acquired it in the future. Nice Weapon! BINGO!!! “Didn’t they say language is a weapon?” Very good!!!

Yes, watch it again, and this time for yourself. This is a difficult movie to react to because when you talk you miss important clues. Here is what you might have seen if you didn't have to talk at the same time. By now you realize that Louise never had a child until after the events of the movie. All the flashbacks of her and her daughter were visions of the future child that she would have with Ian. One of the first clues was when a vision shows Hannah and her picture she drew called "Mommy and Daddy talk to animals." If you look at the picture you can see the Daddy with a hazmat suit on and bird in a cage, and "animals" that look something like the aliens. You might chalk that one up to childish imagination. But a stronger clue was the two visions where Hannah is older and asking her mom the word for "a competition where both sides are satisfied." In the first vision we see Louse say "ask your father, the scientist". Then a few minutes later in the real world, that very topic comes up and Ian says "A non-zero sum game" (which you talked over and missed). Then the second vision shows Louise giving that answer, "non zero-sum game" to Hannah. This strongly suggests the vision could not be a memory from the past, since Louse just learned it now. And Ian is a scientists. By now you can start guessing that Hannah will be the child of Louise and Ian. Then the final clue that really cinches it is when we see a vision where Louise explains to Hannah why her father left them. There is no way that could be a memory. It could only be a vision of the future. But there is one more. When Louise goes into the shell alone and talks with Costello, she is "given" another vision of Hannah, and then she says "I don't understand. Who is this child?" All along we were led to believe this was her child that she already had and who died. But if that were the case she would certainly know who that child is. Then when Louise gets back to base camp she has a vision of herself in the future having written the book on the alien language and teaching classes about it. (Side note: It is satisfying to see her class full now, as compared to not many students before.) Finally, she sees the vision of the meeting 18 months in the future where the Chinese general gives her is private number and the message she needs now. You really have to watch this movie with your full attention.

My cat died one December morning in 2016 and later that day I went to see this movie to get my mind off of the experience. It was hard for me to enjoy the movie and it's still a little bit tainted for me a bit. But it is a good movie.
