Arrived in Yellowstone the Day of the 2022 Flood / How We Spent Our Week Outside the National Park

We landed from our flight last week the day they announced Yellowstone was closed due to the floods. We were already there & decided to make the best of it…
We enjoyed Dubois, Togwotee Pass, Painted Hills, Grand Teton, Rockefeller Parkway, Cody, Buffalo Bill State Park, Wind River Canyon, Boysen State Park, Chief Joseph Hwy, Beartooth Hwy, Cooke City & Silvergate.
It helped that we were familiar with the area & some of these places outside the park we’d visited before, but had to rush through. This was an opportunity to take some time. Working around the road closures made for some long driving days, essentially traveling the winter route most local residents would use.
We saw grizzlies, black bear, moose, coyotes, eagles, elk, mountain goats, deer, bison, pronghorns, marmots & pikas.
We accessed Beartooth Hwy on the WY side from Chief Joseph Hwy, we didn’t know what was open until we drove up to the construction point & asked. The nice lady driving the pilot car informed us that we could drive up to Long Lake, & there was a closure gate just beyond it. The situation out there seems to be changing daily, so part of what we experienced may no longer be relevant.
This is my absolute favorite area to visit anywhere, I can't imagine spending a week out there and not having a fantastic time.

Enjoyed the video and photography from outside of the park. Good of you to scramble and make do. Way back in 2012 we did a reroute to our Yellowstone trip when our Norris campground booking was still snowed in early June. A second night in Cody before a drive up Chief Joseph Scenic Hwy to Cooke City and Silver Gate for breakfast on the way to park. Beautiful hwy and friendly little towns.

New Sub. This is extraordinary filming and editing. I am blown away at this masterpiece. I was captivated. Why in the world do you have such low subscriber count? Please please do not stop making these. Rain is also good in videos. Your subscribers count will increase really big over time. Thank you! Still watching. Oh my Lord. This is breathtaking. That steak looked amazing. I wish you had shown a bit more on that and the whole dinner experience.

Thank you so much for the kind words. We’re fortunate to be able to travel & see some of the most amazing places in the US, and I have a lot of fun making these attempts to share our experiences with others. I don’t give much thought to how many people watch, but I am glad to hear when someone really enjoys watching.

I'm happy to see some of the places my wife and I have traveled up there over the years. We did a trip a few years ago that focused on he areas around the park more than in it. Did Red Lodge for a night, and it's surrounding area, Beartooth,Hwy (AWESOME!), two nights in Cooke City, then headed to Cody over Chief Joeseph , went up near Clark and the east end of Sunlight Canyon to the Jeep trail. Seveve wind there and of couse back at the bride overlook. Drove in from the east entrance for the first time, You are so right, tHe beauty is astounding that that area. We will do that trip again some day. Thanks for sharing your trip with us.

Even spending a full week outside the park unexpectedly, I was still left longing for more of what we did experience. I’d like to set aside a good two weeks just to camp & hike around Sunlight Basin & Beartooth Lake.

We were so lucky this year. 5/21 - 5/27 we spent in the Grand Tetons and then went to Yellowstone 5/27 - 6/2 Snowed on us every day and this kept lots of people away. Had no problem seeing all the sights and parking. Beautiful country. A must for everyone!!!

Thank you for posting! We are staying in Silver Gate in Sept, off of Banock rd. Have you ever walked into the park off of Banock? Pretty neat, you should try it some time. YOu pass the old Silvergate Dump (you cant tell it was a dump unless you look for the old cars) walk a little less than a mile, then you will see a trail maker saying you are entering Yellowstone. There are some trail cams, but not sure who is watching.... See if you can find the horse shoe growing in the tree off the trail. ! THanks again!

For years now I’ve wanted to come in that way, or backpack in by Republic Creek. I’ll have to try to make time to do so, when we’re out there again!

I was headed to Yellowstone. Had reservations 4 months ago for the first time ever in the park this July. Maybe next year!
@shredhiker6209
@shredhiker6209 Год назад
There might still be time to make it work, depending on the reservations you had. It helped that we knew the area, but it was a bit of pure dumb luck that any of this was feasible for us. It’s truly an incredible place, I hope you get to see it someday soon.

@@shredhiker6209 The Mammoth Lodge sent out email that they will be cancelling all reservations and my wife and kids are not experienced campers unfortunately.
@shredhiker6209
@shredhiker6209 Год назад
@@trevorthetherapist4200 that does make for a difficult situation, we had a few nights at mammoth campground canceled on us. I can tell you the places we stayed in Dubois, Cooke City, & Cody had a lot of cancellations for the summer initially. Then by the end of the week folks whose in park reservations had gotten cancelled were reclaiming many of them. With the new license plate based entry system, it seems like traveling in & staying outside the park would be particularly tricky this year.

Hey mike, if this offended you. You may not want to go to Yellowstone. All of the elk chain smoke and gamble and the bison all share needles and are homosexuals. And the moose?? Don’t even get me started on them. All Of the females identify as humans, and all of the Males identify as female reindeer. Also, legend says once you enter the park you’re no longer a pure creature of God. Your eyes glaze over and turn black and you’ll grow 10 sets of horns. Even if you try to cut them off they’ll just grow back. You’ll become one with the dark lord and live a full life of sin and Lust with him as your husband.

Really Mike V??? The girl’s just messin’ around…no harm is meant. Maybe Stan Mills will be more your cuppa tea. 👍
