I found the drinking thing sort of the same when I was living in Japan. My Japanese friends who I also worked with would want to go out bar and pub hopping to each of their own favorite pubs or bars one after another from 2:00 am after we got off work and we would drink until around 6:00 am and then stagger home. I got pretty tired of that after about three weeks, even though I would be feeling like I was getting fairly drunk, which I really didn't like to do, and don't get me wrong, I enjoyed getting a little buzz going, but I really have never been able to handle too much alcohol in quantity. I don't think my Japanese friends could either, but their solution was to just get $#!+faced, puke their guts out, and then start their day all over again. Honestly, I have no idea how they could do that day in and day out, but I knew that if I were to follow in their footsteps, I would end up dead at some point. So, as much as they felt that they were being insulted and losing face because I refused to get $#!+faced and subsequently very sick the next day ... and a day that I would need to be back at work again, I just said no more, thank you. I quickly learned to just tell my friends that my doctor said NO alcohol after three drinks. Somehow, that seemed to work fairly well, and they wouldn't bother me so much after that.
