Really good info on the public transportation, but personally I prefer taking a private water taxi from the airport. It's going to run you about 150 euros at this point, but if you have 2-4 people it's not that unreasonable. It's much faster and the private water taxi will take you as close to your hotel as they can get via water -- often right to the hotel's canal entrance. That means no carrying of luggage which is a big deal in Venice since the bridges are usually steps not ramps. Added bonus is that your first look at the city will be much more enchanting.

Thank you so much for the very informative videos. I have been watching a lot of videos and these are my favorite! My family of 5 are traveling to Venice from the Marco Polo airport in July. We were thinking to get a round trip ticket on the Alilaguna to Fondamente Nuove. But I heard that the Alilaguna is very slow. Do you think it is faster to catch the bus to Piazzale Roma and then take waterbus no. 1 to the Ca' D'Oro stop. My concern is more on the return trip so that we won't miss our departure at the airport. Any input you have would be appreciated. Thank you!
@NomadCitello
@NomadCitello Год назад
I think that the bus PLUS Vaporetto or the bus PLUS a walk to your hotel will take longer than Alilaguna. If it's the right time of day, I strongly recommend the Alilaguna. Nothing compares to arriving in Venice by boat. The city is meant to be seen and appreciated from the water. The view of the city as you arrive by boat is the best way to start your trip. And if your hotel/apartment is very close to an Alilaguna platform like Fondamente Nove, there's no question. If you take the bus, then walk to your hotel, you're going be dealing with crowds. If you take the bus, then transfer to the vaporetto, there are still crowds. And the vaporetto is not fast. Getting from the bus stop to your hotel with heavy luggage will be the worst part of your trip to Venice. Even more if you're traveling with kids. The ONLY time I do not use Alilaguna is when my flight is very early in the morning and it won't get me to the airport on time. If your flight is that early, you might have to walk to Piazzale Roma and get a (normal street) Taxi. If you have it in your budget, and if it's normal daytime hours, you can easily catch a private WATER Taxi from the airport to Venice. That's the best, but pretty expensive. Water Taxis are generally easy to find at the airport (follow the signs for Water Transport, the same for Alilaguna). But, I would NOT recommend that you book a water taxi to pick you up from your hotel and take you to the Airport. I've found that to be very unreliable.
@lylac391
@lylac391 Год назад
So incredibly helpful! Love you guys. Our hotel is really close to San Zaccaria. If we want to take an alilaguna to our hotel, do we need to book ahead or just get tickets when we get off our plane?
@NomadCitello
@NomadCitello Год назад
Thank you, Lyla! It doesn't really matter, so do whatever gives you more peace of mind: if you prefer to have the tickets ready ahead of time, buy them online; if you'd rather have the physical ticket, buy them at the vending machines in the baggage claim area (there's a short on our channel that shows the machines).

Thank you very much for your videos. Our son, my husband and I, will be in Venice in 3 weeks. We are arriving by train and after I watched your video about transportation in Venice, we decided to purchase a 48 hour water bus tickets since we want to be able to go to Murano , Burano and just hop in and out in Venice. This is our first time in Venice so I have a question that it might be silly but once we get off at the closest vaporetto station, we need to walk to our Airbnb? We had the reservation and the address of our apt. But how I know which vaporetto station is the closest?
@NomadCitello
@NomadCitello Год назад
Hello Claudia, thank you for your comment. Yes, once you get off the vaporetto you'll have to walk to the Airbnb. You can check the address on Google maps or Moovit, and see what route those apps recommend from the train station; we also suggest asking the Airbnb host directly, they're definitely the most reliable source!

Hi, as far as cruises are concerned, things are a bit complicated and constantly changing. We recommend contacting your cruise company directly, because each company has different procedures and leaves from different locations in and around Venice (depending on the size of the ship as well).

It would be nice to see covered that way as well. I see we can use vaporetto line 16 to go into the city, but it seems a little bit special to other vaporetto lines. Normal tickets not valid for them. Is there anything special we need to know?

Thank you for your comment. If you're referring to the regular road taxi, the standard fare to Piazzale Roma is 40€; there might be extra fees for extra luggage/night rides. We recommend checking www.radiotaxivenezia.com for a detailed quote. @NomadCitello Год назад
Hi Sophie, thank you for your comment! ATVO is one of the coach companies that connect the airport to Venice, just like Flixbus for example. We didn't mention it because it takes as long as the Aerobus, the only difference being the comfort (the coach has more comfortable seats, air conditioning etc); we didn't want the video to be too long :) As for vaporetto n.2, it really depends on your destination in Venice (check out our public transport video for more details), it's just one of many water bus lines in the city.

We went to Venice for a weekend a few weeks ago. I was robbed within and hour of arrival in the Piazzale Roma buying a ticket for the water taxi. Probably my own fault - I put my phone in my back pocket while I bought the ticket. It only took a few seconds so I thought I was safe. There was a woman hanging around. She jostled me from behind which I thought was odd but I didn't turn around and the phone was gone. Welcome to Venice. The police weren't interested. The girls behind the glass must have observed the scene but they looked blankly at me. Lesson learned.
@NomadCitello
@NomadCitello Год назад
Hello Gareth, thank you for sharing your experience and we're sorry you had to go through that. Unfortunately, all Italian cities have seen a rise in pickpockets, and there's little to nothing that the police can do to stop them, so they often give up entirely. We've had similar experiences in other European cities too, so it's always good to have extra precautions when visiting these famous destinations.
