Arrowheads made from an old Saw Blade with Basic Tools

Hi,
here is a project I've wanted to do ever since I made my Mini Survival knife. With the leftovers from the same saw blade I attempted to create a set of arrowheads that could be used as a nice addition to any survival kit.
I also got to try a few new techniques (at least new to me) and am overall very happy how those arrowheads came out.
This project was inspired by Jimmy Direstas Knife making projects involving old saw blades as their base material. Go to / @jimmydiresta to check his channel.

I liked your sharpening technique and the chisel grind cuts very well on large game. I assume you're thinking of hunting if you're taking the time to grind an edge. I don't know where you live but in the States those broad heads are illegal in most if not all states because they are barbed. If the bottom edge was 100 degrees off the tang you'd be legal. Also it would be easier to make without the acute angle.
@LetsPrepTogether

Thanks a lot! I'm not based in the US but thanks for the info as I didn't knew that barbed heads are illegal. You are right they are a pain to manufacture which is why I changed the design on my second batch. Cheers

If you intend to do this repeatedly, instead of a one off project.:You could make one mild steel template,in place of multiple paper templates. A piece of masonite or plywood, also works well for templates. Also plastic, like that which you find in the kiddie seat, in shopping carts.
@LetsPrepTogether
@LetsPrepTogether 6 лет назад
Thanks a lot for watching and for your recommendation! I have since revisited the project and used a stencil to make around thirty arrowheads from an old two man saw. If I ever had to do it again I would most likely go down the template route for accuracy and speed.

those are really sharp! (pun intended) Im guessing that you heated and quenched the heads because the saw blade hardness was ruined by cutting the arrow heads out with the cutting wheel. I wouldn't have bothered with the quench and temper because Im not sure the temper was ruined in the beginning
@LetsPrepTogether
@LetsPrepTogether 3 года назад
Well looking back I'm not sure it was worth the effort. In the end an arrowhead won't cut stuff as often as a knife so why bother with edge retention?

@Schralenberger
@Schralenberger 6 лет назад
1)If you're using them as props, save yourself the legal headaches then. Use 1/8 to 1/4 inch plastic sheet( like the kiddie seat liner, in shopping carts.). Prime and paint them, afterwards. You can get some realistic faux metal paint effects. Look on some modeling , or cosplay videos. If you think that your police will still still give grief, you can round the tips ever so slightly. No reason to use metal, if they are not intended as fully functional. Plastic is fine for a wall display, or prop .2) If you're not using these as props, but are prepping for when it drops in the pot: make and keep some separate heads. You can store for emergencies. If shit hits the fan, you can always mount them on the shafts later. Make the shafts without heads, or tipped with prop heads. Just mount them when actually needed. Mount them on your target arrows, if and when the need arises.
