Arsenal’s Problem Is NOT A Striker: Tactical Analysis, Transfers, LCM, Improving Arteta’s Attack #3

In part 3 of maximizing Arsenal's attack under Mikel Arteta, I provide a tactical analysis on the most important signing Arsenal can make going forward: the LCM.
Why not a striker? Well, Arsenal's difficulties in finishing are one thing, but part of the reason for this is poor player platforming. A source of constant instability for Arteta's men all season is the left interior, with the likes of Kai Havertz (albeit forced to play more minutes there than initially wanted), Leandro Trossard, Declan Rice, Jorginho, all tasked with playing the role.
However, Declan Rice, the best profile Arsenal have for the role, has not been allowed to play in the left 8 role, due to Thomas Partey's injuries this season.
So, what do the gunners need from this player?
1. Block Manipulation
2. Progressiveness in the carry and dynamism
3. Defensive security out of possession in the duel, ability to space block and maintain intensity throughout the match
Such a creative asset will help add a vertical tendency and balance to Arsenal's attack, one that is very dependent on Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka currently, and Oleksandr Zinchenko's role in the build-up.
It will also help get the most out of Gabriel Martinelli.
I also undergo a transfer report on potential signings for Arsenal, including Frenkie De Jong of Barcelona, Manuel Locatelli of Juventus, Joao Gomes of Benfica, Youssouf Fofana of Monaco, Douglas Luiz, Curtis Jones, Amadou Onana, and why these types of profile should be prioritized over a striker, namely Victor Osimhen of Napoli, Dusan Vlahovic, Ivan Toney of Brentford and more.
Arsenal play Roy Hodgson's Crystal Palace on Saturday, as they look to propel themselves on a title challenge in the second half of the season. Could Emile Smith-Rowe feature, who, alongside Jurrien Timber has impressed in Arsenal's camp in Dubai recently.

I think this is where Timber will help IF he plays the inverted role

Artetas plan for him was to have the fluidity to use him as an IF, but also use him in the left half space in between the lines (the left 8 position in settled possession), ahead of the rigid pivot of Rice + Partey/Jorg/LCM signing. Then create a fluid relationship with Timber on the ball. One of my next videos is on the blockage of our unpredictability this season because of the Timber + Partey injuries

@@harveygration This is correct. But yes, that is in settled possession. On the break, this can be a deficiency because Martinelli's strength is on the counter, not so much in possession play. So this will depend a lot on Timber's carrying ability

He adds central dynamism and combination play + also interestingly box crashing as a 6th man to our play. Suddenly start reintegrating ESR as well and you don’t just get the best possible winger/cm relationships but central access issues and domination solved

Timber is an upgrade on White. Zinchenko should play on the left.

Exactly! The Left 8 is the most important position for Arsenal! We need a Creative, Playmaking, Midfielder that’s also good defensively!

He’s not the perfect fit for the role by any stretch, but he has a few qualities the LCM requires going forward: second ball gatherer, devastating creative output, ball striking, small space operation, has a level of pausa to his game that separates him stylistically to Bruno. But he needs to improve in the duel, pressing intensity etc. RCM/10 suits him the most

No Partey at all has been tough. But then playing him RB when he was fit was crazy. Completely agree, a LCM with all the qualities you mention would be my no.1 priority. Need a signing now to compete for league🙏

You ve covered the lcm profile very well. The only thing I would add is that arteta is obsessed with the cruyff 3 4 3 diamond where he sees lcm moving into the top of the diamond and zinchenko is on the left of the diamond. Being at the top of the diamond the lcm therefore should also (in addition to things you mentioned) be able to play the attacking midfielder/goalscorer role, hence the havertz thing. Arteta then realized that havertz can't do the other stuff that lcm is supposed to do and created his second striker/8 hybrid role just to fit him in the team. On player profiles, I disagree with all except camavinga (I don't know the Dutch guy). Personally I think the profile should be someone like Yaya toure, pogba, lampard, seedorf, gundogan type (last two not tall but have presence). Perotta that played for roma with Totti also but lacks enough creativity. The player that comes to mind now is Bellingham, but that we should have tried before real move. To be fair this profile is not easy to find, and i personally can't come up with any actionable names (but that's why edu earns a salary). esr could be but bit unclear. Also if you want to swap out timber for zinchenko then you also want your lcm to be good in tight spaces and creative (Bernardo silva/cazorla)

Tight space manipulation is something we massively lack atm yes. And as for the 3-4(diamond)-3, my next video covers that + how if Arteta had all options available we would have seen it much more. Personally love Camavinga so much because of that small torso + long legs ratio, ground coverage and untapped creative potential :)

@@harveygrationi personally don't think/don't see that 3 4 3 is that important / worth it that arteta needed to change the whole team for, I think it's more a fetish of his. However, against really defensive teams i can see it's value

Great vid Harvey once again,I think this has been the glaring issue all season if partey can stay fit for the second half we’ll be in with a chance,I think we got a glimpse of the double pivot rather than single pivot against Liverpool in the cup with the wingers a lot closer to goal.Next 5 games are big but all winnable,season is still salvageable.

We need a striker too mate. Mainly due to us playing against average lowest block defense amongst the top leagues. Need someone who can meet or overperform their xG to win games in different game states. Underperformance of xG created is alarming. That hasn't got anything to do with a LCM. We create enough chances to win games, but we simply haven't been taken those chances

But agree that the issue with Martinelli hasn't been Martinelli, but the structure around him (lack of overlapping FB's due to LB inverting, and L8 not being as accommodating and intricate as Odegaard on rhs

Myles Lewis Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri but as a RCM. For the left, Patino (on loan at Swansea)

I think the left CM has to have a good left foot. Think about it, no one on the left has a left foot to cross in swingers. Martinelli is right-footed. The left back, Zinchenko, comes inside for ball progression. If the midfielder on that side is also right-footed or if the right-footed Timber/Tomiyasu are playing the inverted LB role, then you would be lacking. Look at that 3-2 win against Man Utd when Xhaka rotated with Martinelli to cross for Nketiah to score the first goal (I think). Look this season, against Fulham, Vieira found space on the left to whip one in for Nketiah. Wolves last season is another example, but that was inside the box for Ødegaard. Teams know that the right side is Arsenal's creative side opposed to the goal scoring left side with Havertz and Martinelli (not much creation going on there). Hence, they aren't that much willing to let them play and open up that side. They do open up on the left, but Arsenal are struggling to punish them. Arsenal should test PSG's resolve to keep Fabian Ruiz. He's not played very much there. Also, there's Teun Koopmeiners at Atalanta.

Love the Koopmeiners shout- another one who could fit right into Jorginho’s hybrid 8/6 role recently. As for the footedness comments. Great players find angles from anywhere because their angles are unlimited. If that makes sense. But a left footed interior certainly helps under and overlaps agreed.
