Arsenal entered the match as favourites and beat Southampton 6-1 nine days earlier in the league. Goalkeeper David Seaman captained Arsenal in the absence of the injured Patrick Vieira; it was to be Seaman's last appearance for the club.
In defence for Southampton, Chris Baird made only his second competitive start. Chris Marsden captained the club in the absence of the injured club captain, Jason Dodd.

I was there as a Southampton fan - fantastic day, and proud that we all stayed to see Arsenal lift the trophy. What a side they had back then. We had some chances, but Arsenal were the better team tbh. Nonetheless, it was a rare and wonderful day for us. The problem we’ve got now is that whenever we do well, the really big sides just buy all our best players - it’s only about money nowadays.

Was at this game with my now departed best friend Jason.....even though we lost it was such a fantastic occasion and to be staying behind at the end and singing "Yellows"with all of our fans was what our special day was all about.....even walking back to the car had loads of gooners fans shaking our hands in commiseration. A pure gold day,one I will never forget.

We made that match much more difficult than it was suppose to be, but our late collapse in the league was playing on their minds a bit..and us fans too. Was a nervy afternoon even though we were clear favourites. Nice to see Sir Bobby Robson in the celebrations at the end. Class club, The Arsenal.

my brother and i travelled from australia to hopefully see southampton win the cup. sadly that didn't happen but nevertheless we had a great experience and a day to remember. after the match we both thought thiery henry, the gazelle, was the difference.

@@glennoconnor1130 I remember watching the game with all my family (saints fan) I was 13, cracking game. Shame we’re losing 9-0 after 9-0 now but my god I miss home and away games. Can’t beat a London day out for the football
