South African artist Zanele Muholi describes herself as a "visual activist" : "it is my status, beyond my sexuality and my gender". Zanele Muholi studied at David Goldblatt's school in Johannesbourg, a place where she begun to denounce the punishments and agressions affecting the LGBT community in South Africa.
When she is photographs someone she focusses of their posture, to make sure that the people she portrays carry themselves with dignity. When talking about Zanele Muholi, artist Sue Williamson says that she "makes us aware that our bodies are locked into a flow of interpretations, that we sometimes accept."
