I am almost speechless. "Ugetsu" is so terribly underrated musically, historically and empirically. I rarely discuss jazz with friends because they have very limited musical tastes. I am ecstatic to know someone shares my affinity from Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers' performances captured in Japan. In fact, when I DJ I love to mix in the intro to "One By One." Thanks for finding this gem and sharing it!
Trumpet: Terrance Blanchard Alto Sax: Donald Harrison Tenor Sax: Jean Toussaint Piano: Johnny O'Neil Bass: Charles Fambrough Drums: Art Blakey See ending credits
So happy I had the opportunity to mingle with ART an his messengers in the late 80'S at club called MIKELL'S uptown NYC, that group was Benny green (p), peter Washington (b), phillip harper (tr) Javon jackson(ts), an of course the master ART !!!! took pictures with them, bought art a few drinks. Real down to earth COOL cats, and the set was pure undiluted straight ahead JAZZ !!!!
@Thundermonkeyms Hi! This is the only filmed version of this I could find - which is why I put it up! To my ears it follows the original 1963 Ugetsu recording pretty closely - in fact the intro horn phrase is a direct lift (as is a lot more of the playing!). About that ensemble part you hear at 7.01 - it was played behind the solos of Freddy Hubbard Curtis Fuller and Wayne Shorter (who wrote it) on the original - but Interestingly enough was not played behind pianist Cedar Walton's solo! Bob
Thanks. I was looking for this tune a year ago - couldn't remember the title. Love the way the first four bars are somewhat reserved, but then cuts loose for the next four. Great fun to play.
One of the amazing Shorter compositions written for the Messengers! "Ugetsu" is no doubt among the top ten Messengers albums along with "Moanin'", "Free For All" and "Mosaic".
truly one of the great messengers bands, note how harrison begins his solo like wayne's original solo (from the riverside ugetsu lp) and terence is so amazing, great sound phrasing and downright funky, btw the changes to this is for albert are available, i have them somewhere, i'll dig them up for you..
Saw this lineup in Chicago at the Jazz Showcase that was then in the Blackstone hotel. The people I was running with had no idea this place existed and they were from Chicago!!
Hey V Boy! did I get that wrong!!! - Yep, it's the first track on the live album - and also this opening sax lick here is a straight lift from Shorter solo!.....:( Thanks! :) Bob
This live hit must have been after the 1982 album "Oh By The Way". I had to look up some of the personnel to be sure. I recognized Charles Fambrough and Donal Harrison on alto. I had to confrim if that really was Terence Blanchard on trumpet because he is so young here! Man is he killin! Bill Pierce (Professor at Berklee College of Music) on Tenor sounds nice too! Great clip!
@BuckshotLaFunke You know, you thanked me already, and that's quite enough! But seriously, you need to get this fakebook! And transcribe by ear too, in thirty years, even 1 chord per year, you would've had the chords a long time ago ;-) Cheers, FB
@nerviosa1173 I don't have any friends to talk jazz with either....I would LOVE to hear your DJ stuff! Most of my friends actually call me "closed minded"!LOL! They don't get it at all.....
@atadsatirical You will be pleased to know that you are one hundred percent correct in that you are one hundred percent wrong ... It aint Scott Joplin - or if it is, they played a terrible joke on him when they buried in 1917 .. You are also one hundred percent correct when you write it is still the greatest art form. ... You obviously have excellent taste
Art plays different than tbe 1962 original why would tbe horn copy some of the original solo? Tenor guy does it too , guess they dont know some of us heard the original solo.
If I ever had was forced to answer the painfully juvenile and banal question "What is your all time favorite song?", I would not hesitate to respond "One By One" off Ugestu by.....you get the idea. Can t write, must listen...
