First time coming to An Nam Gallery. I am very familiar with Tan Dinh area but I didn't expect there to be such a lovely gallery in such a lovely alley. I saw paintings by reputable artists right on this first time. Unfortunately, the exhibition scale was small, so it wasn't very satisfying haha.

Annam Gallery, together with Curator Bui Thi Phuong Thao and Curator Hung Nguyen, cordially invites the audience to visit the exhibition of the late artist Luu Cong Nhan (1929-2007) - "A Glimpse of Luu Cong Nhan".
The exhibition "A Glimpse of Luu Cong Nhan" is a thin slice of the life and monumental artistic career of the famous artist Luu Cong Nhan. The exhibition takes the audience back in time, from the period when the artist was recovering from illness at the end of his life in Da Lat with a series of watercolors on paper that were extremely minimalist in terms of form and shape, back to the golden age of his career when he was young with a series of oil paintings on canvas, both realistic and abstract.
At the end of 2000, with his health declining and his mobility limited due to Parkinson's disease, Luu Cong Nhan moved back to Da Lat to recover and later passed away there. He continued to paint to ease his nostalgia for his profession because for him, "painting is living", and painting was also a spiritual salvation in his final days in a hospital bed or in a wheelchair. At this time, he encountered many difficulties when painting large-sized paintings, so this series of still life watercolors - mostly flowers, on Diep paper and Canson paper are very simple with some lines of block-shape construction. However, viewers of the paintings clearly feel that the artist still has a good mastery of the material and is proactive in his brushstrokes.
With the series of oil paintings, the works span from the early period of Luu Cong Nhan's creation with images of people and wartime landscapes (50s-60s), then the period of contact and influence by Western abstract painting (around 1970 to 1972), the period when the artist lived in Hoi An and painted about this ancient town (1984-1985), and the period when he focused on painting many female nudes (90s).
About the artist
Luu Cong Nhan (1929-2007) was a former student of the Resistance course (1950-1954) teaching at the Viet Bac resistance base of the Vietnam Fine Arts School, with painter To Ngoc Van as principal and direct teacher. During these years, Luu Cong Nhan was loved and cherished by teacher To Ngoc Van because he soon revealed his talent through exercises and realistic sketches, especially reaching the pinnacle of technique in the use of watercolors.
Unlike other painters of the same period - a generation that lacked material resources, Luu Cong Nhan was an exception. After the resistance war against France, returning to Hanoi, he was classified into the group of creative painters on the state payroll; therefore, he had the freedom and comfort to go on outdoor painting tours in many localities in Vietnam. In addition, his family created conditions for him to access and study foreign art documents to accumulate knowledge about art, which helped his works become more solid in their writing style.
In addition, he also spent a lot of time writing letters to friends and family to share his thoughts about art, painting and the personality of the artist. This helped his spiritual life become richer, "more innocent, more poetic in the depth of a person sensitive to everything around him". From there, his paintings also became richer and deeper in terms of meaning and content.
When it comes to Luu Cong Nhan's paintings, it is always the image of a Vietnamese countryside - a full buffalo attached to the farmer, full of "love", "simple, gentle and peaceful" despite the fierceness of war, or the image of a woman "beautiful and simple but sexy, under a crow's beak scarf", with wet black eyes, "gentle and passionate".
