@WelzieArt 10 дней назад
We had a little guest book out that people could write themselves. Asking for an email at purchase is another easy was. You can also do an email raffle where they can put their email in a bowl and at the end of the event can pull a name. Lots of ways to get emails. Just don’t be afraid to ask. If they say no it’s not that big of deal and the email wouldn’t have been useful anyway

Fart-Fairs! Your advice is good. I have done a number of arts and crafts fairs. I find some products sell like hot cakes and some don't move at all. The vendor space rental has to be cheap or it's a gamble and you may end up loosing money. Food always makes more money then crafts. So food trucks can take away from your earnings as a craft vendor. Also a lot of people just like looking around and not buying. Charging a percentage of earnings makes more sense to me then charging the same flat fee for all vendors. Some vendors are rude or distracted communicators and talk themselves out of sales... I recently went to a vendor market and as I was talking to the seller, I asked her how it was going? She said "terrible!" Her product was pretty good. I was considering buying something, then another customer came in and the seller immediately shifted her attention to this other person while interrupting me, mid-sentence. I thought she seems desperate, sucking up to everyone that enters the tent and not paying attention to me as a customer, so I didn't buy anything. Neither did the other customer.

I hadn't considered the downside of overpricing your art as you mentioned. Thank you for that perspective! However, I do think its the lesser of two evils to lower your pricing over time than selling stuff cheap. Far too many artists price there art too low for a variety of reasons and continue this bad habit of not charging what they are worth.

@@WelzieArt that’s great advice, thanks again! As a question, did you ever worry about running out of what you’d consider your ‘better/best’ pieces needing to try and sell the ones that were just ok?
@WelzieArt
@WelzieArt Год назад
Lol of course! Prints of the best pieces always help so make sure you get a good image of your pieces. As far as the mediocre pieces… they will just pile up. I have stacks of pieces that never got much love. I’ve probably thrown away more pieces than some other artists make. You learn what becomes a good seller by doing the markets and getting good feedback from your audience. If 1/10 is a winner, figure out what made that piece work so it can get to 2/10 then 3/10. Not all pieces will be a hit but just make sure you’re learning along the way so the bad pieces can serve a purpose

Great tips! I do wonder though, how do you handle situations with people who look at low prices and still tell you they're too expensive? Or say "I don't want to pay that" right to your face? I've had this happen so many times and it's always frustrating. My usual response ultimately amounts to "then don't buy it" in the nicest way I can put it, but people like this are constant.
@WelzieArt

I know the feeling! A safe way to throw a little back in their face is to say “not everyone can afford it” This will value your art while making them feel uncomfortable. Try it next time and tell me how it goes. It works

Hey there. Keep coming back to your vid! You’ve. Got so much energy. It comes through in your vids. My show is a month out now and I’m having difficulty figuring out a display set up that doesn’t take up the whole inside of the tent, which is what my display was originally going to be. What I wanted to know is how much weight do you think the frame of the pop-up tent, is the kind that I have like the canopy, can bear?
@WelzieArt
@WelzieArt Год назад
Hi! Thanks for the feedback! It’s ok to take up all your tent space. As long as people have room to move and view your work. I’m not sure how much weight your pop up can hold but I wouldn’t think more than 35 lbs. you might be able to add some reinforcements to your pop up. If you have the ability I would highly recommend setting your booth up once or twice before your first show. It will help so much. Good luck!! Have fun and stay inspired 🤙🏼

Man this is so helpful! I literally took seven pages of notes and replayed this a few times. I feel so much better knowing what to expect from someone that is actually doing it. I do have a question though! I have a Nissan frontier/truck, 4-door, was wondering if this would be ideal because I have never seen anyone set up before. My initial thought was to work up to buying a mini van or something, but wasn’t sure how people get their work to the show in regards to where you park, etc. Do you believe this is ideal? And also, do you have to carry all your stuff to the tent for certain shows? Or can you park next to your area and unload and set up, and then park elsewhere? I know this depends on the show, but what has been your experience? I’m trying to make this as easy as possible on myself if I ever have to work a show alone, and these are just thoughts I’ve been nervous to ask someone at a show.

Great question. 4 door truck is perfect. Keep important stuff inside. Less important stuff outside. I used a 4 door truck for years but ended up renting a U-Haul for all my stuff. Don’t buy a minivan just for shows. Use what you have and figure it out from there. U-Haul is cheap and easy. Shows often allow you to drive up for 1-2 hours to your booth prior to the show. Easy to unload and set up if can make it in one trip (hence a big box truck so you don’t have to make 2 trips) if you have to walk a ways from parking to booth it’s best to get a hand cart or dolly. Remember that you won’t know what you need until you do it. Don’t worry about what would be ideal and what you think you should get. Do a show with what you have and make adjustments from there. Great art will be more important than a truck or van. First couple shows are learning. Don’t spend too much money so you don’t have that to stress about. Im stoked the video helped. Have fun, stay inspired and good luck.

how do you pack up an art piece when it is purchased? do you use die cut plastic bags with handles?
@WelzieArt

Usually we don’t bag matted prints. Original artwork is usually placed in the bubble wrap that we brought it to the show in. If you must provide bags or packages keep super simple. Nothing custom. It’s expensive and time consuming. Keep it simple. Simple is more “eco friendly”

How do you package paintings for customers at a festival? Do you just hand it to them or do you wrap it and place it in a bag? I am trying to find a professional way present the art to a customer.
@WelzieArt
@WelzieArt Год назад
Great question! A lot depends on the size and weight. The lighter the piece the less you need to wrap it. My originals used to be heavy and so I had pretty snug boxes for the piece. The boxes were great for transporting them but also to let the collector use it to take it home. Standardization of your artwork size will help make this easier. I would have 6 sizes of originals and had boxes for each size. I would make a template of a box then use that to make boxes out of whatever cardboard I had. Matted prints can be given with no bag or a paper bag. Canvas giclee can have a box or wrapped in paper. Sometimes collectors don’t need a thing. Sometimes a complete pack job. I could go on and on. Hope this helps. Stay inspired

Great question. Often you get an hour window before the event to pull your car up to the booth to drop off. Then you can unload. Make sure this is possible by reading the rules and time for the the event. I have been to events where you can’t pull up to your booth. So make sure to read the rules to your event

Great question. Cardboard to separate the pieces. Can use bubble wrap as well but use painters tape or plastic wrap to seal. Pieces do get damaged, it’s just part of the cost of doing business. Brown butcher paper from Home Depot works well too for wrapping pieces. I ended up renting a U-Haul to easily get all my artwork and booth to the event in 1 load and it would minimize the amount of packing I would have to do. Movers blankets are cheap and really helpful. Stay tuned to my channel. I will probably do an advanced art market video and I’ll discuss this topic more thoroughly. Aloha 🤙🏼

What would you consider to be a lot of pieces for a first timer? I'm in the process of doing 10 pieces for my first art festival. Do I need more than that?
@WelzieArt
@WelzieArt 8 месяцев назад
Great question!! 10 pieces for your first art festival should be fine. It’s enough to show people what your style is. If you sell 1 piece that’s a 1/10 success rate which is pretty high. The more pieces you have the Success rate can be easier like 1/20. But really focus on having great art. That’s what’s important. Also, it’s your first show. That’s amazing. No matter what you’re awesome for trying it. Do the show. Learn. Paint, practice learn and do another show. Stay at. Keep going. And someday you look back and think about how it all started at that first show. Good luck. Let me know how it goes. Stay inspired, aloha 🤙🏼

(aka OkieSketcher 1949) I am just starting to look into setting up at an art festival so I look at videos such as this one as well as speak with other artists who have been at this for a while. In regards to framing your work, with and without mattings, I have been told to go look at thrift stores, Goodwill stores, estate sales, etc. Often one can find frames that work for one’s art at a reasonable rate.
@WelzieArt
@WelzieArt Год назад
I agree. There’s a lot of ways to get a hold of affordable frames. Unfortunately I found sometimes it took more work and time to find, fix, and store used frames. It’s often hard to find frames for the size you need. Unless you paint a piece to the size of the frame. I think a good way to bypass frames is to paint paintings on proper canvas with wrapped edges. Minimum 1 1/2” in thick. And paint the painting around the edges. It has a great look and you won’t have to deal with all the problems that come with frames. At one point I was spending more time on frames than I was my art and had to spend more money than I should have. It’s all a learning journey so just enjoy it all. Always learning. Have fun!
@OkieSketcher1949
@OkieSketcher1949 Год назад
@@WelzieArt - (@OkieSketcher1949) I agree with what you have posted for oil and acrylic works, however I do pen and ink sketches and watercolors. Right now the largest piece of watercolor paper I use is 9”X12” and I lay out a 0.5” border around the perimeter of the larger paper. Many of the smaller ones easily fit inside standard frames, especially after I mat them.

Depends on the festival. Some festivals do have higher end clients. Are you currently selling your artwork for thousands? Depends on which prints you’re talking about. For aluminum and canvas giclee I use a local printer here in Hawaii that does fantastic work. You should be able to find one online near you or able to ship to you. For our matted paper prints we have a canon 110 and a epson that prints archival ink. They are the high end printers for personal use before you get into commercial printers. Mats and bags for prints can be bought in smaller quantities on Amazon. Order small quantities before you find what works for your art before buying in bulk. R and D takes time but it’s worth it for the best quality and look. Hope this helps. Stay inspired 🤙🏼
