Art slays it in the beginning and then...just when you think Glady's and the Pips blow him away (and they are amazing!) Art comes back and lays it down majestically...WOW!
Gladys is simply just AMAZING !!!! What other female who is alto who has a voice that POWERFUL. It reminds me of a pipe organ. And its ten times more intense when your sitting in front row of one of her concerts.
I Agree whole heartedly Gladys is the best of the best ,Plus she is still rocking it at 75yrs old i saw here at Bergen Pac and still has those pipes AMAZING
You are AMAZING GLADYS .....MY Mom drove me and my aunt 4.5 hours to see you. I remember the moment the stadium went completely dark. You could hear a pin drop, When out of the darkness This huge powerful voice yelled out. ' I GOTTA TRAIN TO CATCH !!!. And the orchestra started Midnight Train and you enter the stage from the right and the Pips from the left , The crowd went nutz. One of the most memorable experiences in my life !! THANK YOU
One of the most iconic performances in music Garfunkle would later comment he could hardly contain himself (evident) during it,and that this is how he and Simon envisioned the song sounding when they wrote it. A testiment to the 'church' of GladysKnight and the Pips.
ART was always a big fan of the Doo-Wop era, and he was having the time of his life singing with Gladys Knight and the Pips.. I personally prefer his angelic type rendition in the 1970 original version .
Thanks for posting this. Gorgeous. I love that the Pips are up front for a change....always seems to me that although they were immensely talented in their own right they were always the bridesmaids beside the magnificence of Gladys. The Garfunkster looks like he's having fun too.

I actually watched this on TV that night. I just don't remember what show. Gladys Knight is still the best of the best.Yes, I am that old. Gladys found the Jackson 5 and went on to be the best of the best.
I believe it was the 10th anniversary of Rolling Stone magazine. The blending harmony of Gladys Knight and the Pips and Art Garfunkel was totally totally amazing: it’s iconic classic and makes my heart soar

Awesome, but the ending fell apart with the Pips going into their scat verses. They should have done that earlier and had Art come back to slam the door on the final verse.
Watching this for the first time I felt that Gladys & her screaming backup singers rudely overpowered the true talent of Art Garfunkel. It is his song & they should have let him be heard. He is the best of the best. He was a good sport about it. Love that man!!!💕💕
After art sings the first verse, the band changes keys before Gladys starts singing because her voice is in a different register. You will notice during the middle of the song art is not singing into a mike because his voice is in a different register. Later in the song the band switches back to the original key for Art to sing.
sfeddie1 Thank you for that info. I’m such a big fan of Art Garfunkel that I prefer his beautiful rendition of the song. I feel that the jazzy input from Gladys ruins the unique & lovely vocals by Artie - just my opinion. 😋💕
@@normaverleni7217 Yes, two completely different styles and arrangements. Both artists stayed true to the style of music they are known (and loved) for. I believe that is what the producer of whatever show this is was trying to convey. Art is one of the best at what he does, and the same for G & The P's. BTW, My mother's name was Norma Cheechi. Another fine Italian name.
sfeddie1 Of course both artists are extremely talented in their style of music. I’m just not a fan of her blaring rendition of this song - love Artie’s beautiful sound. I just finished reading his very insightful & interesting book, “What is it all but Luminous”. I’m so impressed with his many facets of wisdom & philosophies. Read if you get a chance. Quite a coincidence that your mother’s name is Norma / not too many of us around anymore. Lol
@kirbyrod Im sorry !! i saw Aretha live at Jingle Ball Benefit with Jessica Simpson, Patti Labelle and Gladys Knight. Aretha broke my heart she sounded Horrible she was winded , When Gladys took the stage and they saved her for last . She brought the house down. Then Patti Labelle and Jessica Simpson joined her in closing WAS AMAZING. Aretha was back stage getting Oxygen
@@normaverleni7217 you probably know this already, but she was his girlfriend for a few years who committed suicide when he was in Europe filming "Bad Timing". She did it at the apartment they were sharing in NYC.
I wouldn't arrange it that way as it seemed to stray too far away from what Garfunkle had originally laid down. Reverting to such a deep gospel style seemed to pervert the songs intent of straight line purity and placed Gladys Knight as being less versatile than she really is. The part where they all came together including Art Garfunkle near the end redeemed it somewhat.
