Great video! Except the coating of the paper doesn’t have to be done in a darkroom. It can be done under regular lights as long as sunlight isn’t pouring into the room one is coating the paper or letting the paper dry. I make all my cyanotypes under regular lights and have never had a problem.

are LED lights safe to use during the coating?

@@martinezgonzalezgraciacris4982 Yes, however I generally suggest you do so in low / subdued lighting.

You don’t need a safe light. As long as it isn’t uv light you are fine.

@VirginiaMuseumofFineArts. Very nice tutorial. A curiosity: how did you get such big photograph negative? Is it an original plate or it was printed out to a bigger image after scanning to a computer and transferring it to an acetate sheet (via a home printer)? Thank you in advance

I would try multiple light sources and longer exposure times to play with shadows...

Thank you for sharing all this information! May I ask where can I get that frame with the glass on it, that you use at the beginning? Also those trays look just perfect!! I wish I had that whole set up. Thank you again

Everything is great but I've watched so many tutorials and just like yourself, everyone seems to skip the part on how to actually place the negative. It's dead simple with the objects but how is the real photo being printed this way? Am I the only one who doesn't get it? Are you using digital negative printed on any paper or does it have to be special transparent paper? If normal paper, how with it be processed my sunlight?? So confused 😒

Hello! Thanks for your question. When using a negative, it's best to print it on a sheet of transparency then place that on top of the treated cyanotype paper. If you use regular paper, the sunlight will not penetrate very well. If you don't know how to make a negative from a scanned photo or digital photo, you can do this easily in Photoshop (or other programs) using the invert function. Then you print that using an inkjet printer onto a sheet of transparency. I hope this helps!

@@monb.6841 You can watch the very comprehensive digital negatives series from Dave Smith here: ru-vid.comvideos Edit: Although he uses this for palladium printing, the process applies to every contact printing technique based on UV light. Cheers.

Hey! I was just wondering why my prints are not turning blue? I've left them in the sun for 3 hours on an English day and still nothing :( no blue appears at all, what am I doing wrong? :( I WISH 5 MINUTES)
@MrEliasMarques

Maybe your solution was just bad or expired. Maybe the glass you put in front of the paper is UV protective. Maybe your paper has those chemicals that the presenter is referring to. I think a good idea to try and figure out what is happening would be to simply coat the paper and leave it under the sun directly (with no glass or anything on top) just to see if the solution reacts.

What do you mean by saying to treat them with coffee?
@carolynbuss9868

Look up tea or coffee dying. The coffee or tea will tint the paper/print.
