In Episode 8 of Art Island, filmmaker Zsofin Sheehy meets painter Elaine Savoie on her Hornby Island homestead and Studio. An unapologetic iconoclast, Elaine uses her painting practice to question the norms of her Catholic upbringing and human-centred society. The conversation follows Elaine's life of making, raised by the community of island artists and shaped by her process, connection to the land she stewards, and using art as a tool to play and explore oneself. In addition to her creative practice in painting and drawing, Elaine also uses writing and poetry to humorously and fearlessly delve into the intricacies of island life and reflect on her Metis heritage, interweaving themes of personal identity and the complexities of intergenerational processing.
[About Elaine Savoie]
An artist and farmer born on Hornby Island, Elaine Savoie's upbringing within the early farming settlements of the Savoie family, the Catholic church, and the island's unique natural landscape laid the foundation for her creative journey from a young age. In her nationally recognized Icon series, she seamlessly merges canonical and imagined saints, creatively embodied as roosters, seabirds, and other local creatures.
[Art Island: Perspectives from a Creative Community]
Who are the individuals that comprise the vibrant artistic community of Hornby Island? This 10-episode docu-series looks into the personal lives and artistic perspectives of local artists - our community members. Expanding on how they became artists, what inspires their art, challenges they've encountered, and how they persevered, Art Island is a deep dive into why artists feel art is important and how it has the power to affect us all.

Bravo to Zsofin for this wonderful film. And big thanks to Elaine for being the subject, and such an interesting one. I really enjoyed watching this, for the dual purposes of learning about Elaine's work and also to observe Zsofin's filmmaking. I was intrigued by a collage of photos posted recently showing Zsofin's multi-camera setup in Elaine's studio, and so I enjoyed watching the result of that, and the wonderful crafting of the final product. Thanks everyone.

Wow. I am an artist of more than one medium, I thought i was the only one that thought the way you do. But i m 70 years young. I stopped worrying about what anyone thought about me. Except my sons and grand sons. We have great creative conversations all the time. All that to say thank you. Now back to my new medium……kneedle felting.

That poem, at the end…I feel that. So good to hear that feeling/craving put into words. I feel a kindred spirit here. The paradox, the second guessing. But I feel to say - it’s ok. You are known, you are loved. What you care about is deeply important. Make art. Be all of you.

Love this lady... Yep, garden comes first with me, looking after my block of land and trees... have visits from 'the green man' if a message needs listening to, and it sometimes comes through in my art... and yay! for freedom to express in whatever way...

Love Elaine’s rebel woman warrior spirit, who refuses to be put in a box. I absolutely love Sinead O’Connor as well due to her rebel spirit.. Elaine’s sweet art is awesome! Having fun with art is what I enjoy the most. Would love to visit the island and see it in person. Everyone on the island has very independent energy & they’d appreciate my political art. Spirituality has zero to do with a church. In fact i need to do a piece on the catholic inquisition, which lasted for hundreds of years. I may have a piece on the pedophile priests in the church. I grew up Catholic so I know a lot about the faith and its corruption.

Well said! Being spiritual is important, life saving, but bring religious is the opposite. I can’t understand how anyone who is truly an artist will not see those truths right in front of their noses.

The balance is Love. Love is the compass. If it’s brining you joy like a child you are going on in the right direction. You will kill yourself and the joy if you stop creating because of all the “tragedies” that could happen. Not creating is a far greater tragedy. ❤ Many Blessings 💝

Religions are man made rules, normally based on some spiritual written works that supported heavily POLITICAL agendas on their time and that kinda fit to any time in history given how is “interpreted” to control, manipulate and obtain resources from the masses. Every religion has had a political basis and it is so till tuis day. Being spiritual, believing in a higher power, practicing high morals, etc, it all has nothing to do with religions, I have seen their inner workings, there’s crime, abuse if power and evil gain at every corner. This us the reason why it’s always men in their leadership positions, bc they are all about obtaining power, control and resources at any scale and level.

Huh, bc she isn’t like you, what? For many ppl Catholic doesn’t do it for us, at all. That’s why there are many many other paths. Many of us have long ago outgrown “Catholic”. “No thanks”to the teaching that lets priests rape little kids for years, and then, when discovered, move that priest to an unsuspecting community where he can continue his abuse. All in the name of God, right?

Aren’t you some kind of special. The Libertarian Fascists, like Peter Thiel, Clarence Thomas, the Mercers-all want to overthrow this democracy and “bring Rome to Washington DC” [their words]. In other words: Traitors. TRAITORS. So take your faux ideas on God and keep them to yourself.

I can see that art is a personal expression for her, but using Orthodox icons as inspiration and replacing saints with roosters feels strange. Even if someone doesn’t share religious beliefs, it’s important to remember how certain symbols resonate with others. And it's not a joke or funny; it is offensive.
@samcollage7682
@samcollage7682 2 месяца назад
Who made the religious icons? Who says they have the same meaning for everyone? Who controls thought? Many religious icons are beautiful and we all have an individual reason why we want them in our lives. Visuals and objects are there to invite and inspire thoughts and feelings.

Art is personal and yes sometimes it can be offensive. If art evokes an emotion within it did its job
@olga.goncharova

For those who may not be familiar with Orthodox Christianity, icons hold a very special place-they are more than just art; they are sacred and are treated with great reverence. Orthodox Christianity teaches us not to judge others, and it's important to remember that every religion has its own symbols that are deeply significant. Just as altering an icon might be offensive to Orthodox Christians, doing something similar with symbols from other religions, like Islam, could also be hurtful and even dangerous. I understand that art can be interpreted in many ways, but I see this work not as an original artistic creation, but more as a replication of ancient art. It seems like the artist is trying to make a statement that religion is fake and that saints shouldn’t be worshiped, almost as if she’s judging people who believe in God. While art can certainly be used to express personal beliefs, it's important to remember that making judgments about others' faith can be hurtful.
