I've watched these before and am revisiting--it's funny how we forget so much in a short time. I just want to say thank you for hitting on the versatility subject. There was so much focus in my college days and even after in the informal art communities, where you HAD to have a signature style--"you need this to stand out and get noticed!" I've spent so many years chasing this mythical BS quest that I banged up and have all but lost the innate gift I had from the outset: the studying is what I love. I LOVE being able to tell from the strokes you use, how you process and display the world around you--you and every artist I follow.

Hi Aaron, That video was very interesting, so may I suggest you dive a bit deeper into this subject and - if possible - show us some examples of good portfolios? Btw, I really enjoy your lectures / videos. So thank you so much for sharing you skills and knowledge with us. Best regards, Anna

It's always interesting to hear about the "business of doing business" side of creative professions. Thanks so much for this video!

Hi Aaron! I love Disney since I know me as a person, and finding out you and your work and knowing that you are sharing your knowledge and experience with us is speechless. I think all of you, Disney artists/genious, should share your knowledge with us more! This is priceless and we get to fall in love even more with lovely works and such amazing people, that, for me, are legends. It inspires me to improve myself, and learning from people I admire, is one of my biggest dreams. And I must say, I learn more from your videos than having bunch of lessons at university or any other school. I think its because you share and do it with your heart. I just wanted to say, thanks to you, and all great artists, for that! Huge hug from Brazil. ^^

Thank you! Saw this on my feed _just_ as I was revamping my portfolio and thinking about what kind of pieces I should put in and what to get rid of.

What happens if a studio decides to hire you but your best work is all stuff that takes way too long to be viable fir a company? Is it better to wait until youre faster or do they consider that when looking at your stuff?

This video is great! Thank you so much. Lately, I have been working hard on a portfolio with some of my co-workers who are from Big Idea, Dreamworks, Disney, and Blue Sky. They have been coaching me on what to draw, but it's really good hearing from someone who actually looked at the portfolios. I'm trying to get into Dreamworks or Universal by next year, so I'm so happy to have found your channel. It's fantastic. Totally gonna share it all around. :D

Such kind, and thorough, insider advice! But Mr Blaise, please don't work through your lunch, or advocate it! Lunch is for resting. And the practice can land one in HR, or even get one fired, as, in America, it's a violation that can get the company sued.
@jarosbodytko6462

Stu VS I agree, but honestly, in this climate of making as much money as possible, I'm surprised people still get to have lunch during their lunchbreaks....

So what is it that let's you know if you're meant to be a visual development artist or character designer or concept artist? Because I'm still young, but I've never taken art classes so I haven't been introduced to many things that can help me decide. Either way, great video!
@greenazure4367
@greenazure4367 5 лет назад
Depends on your field of interest and what you like drawing. If you want to work in video games, then concept art is the way to go. If you want to work in animation, then visual development is the way to go. Character designer is a specialized job relegated to the animation industry. In games there tends not to be a character designer as that job usually goes to the concept artist. The closest equivalent in video games to a character designer would be a character artist which is a 3D job. So basically, Visual development/character designer = Animation industry Concept art/character artist = Games industry

I've always said if an artist doesn't think they're making a product they shouldn't be anywhere near a production business. They should stay home. It's sad that art can't be thought of as a product. It is nothing but that. If you want to eat that is.
@heidigfx
@heidigfx 6 лет назад
i think this is not necessarily about whether it's a product or not. I think those who don't want to think of it as a product just think of themselves more as free. Free to work in the style they want, free from deadlines, free from having a boss... you know, more like being a fine artist except one who works in his or her own studio and is not hired to paint the Sistine Chapel xD What they're missing though is that it's great to be part of something much bigger and see it come to life.

I'd like some advice (and from anyone else too), what do you say to get rid of people who say art is not a good career/not worth paying for/etc? And what's your response to the opinion which I've heard too much - your art is worthless unless you draw people? :( Had to deal with this from parents, friends, strangers alike...
@PedroCanilho
@PedroCanilho 10 лет назад
Say nothing... if you think you got talent, and art is what you like, just go for it... when you are good at something, and you enjoy it, thats priceless... you may not become rich... but you will be doing what makes you happy... and that should be the most important thing for your parents and friends...

There's only one thing you can do: ignore those people when they say negative things about your art (or any art, for that matter). I've been drawing ever since I was allowed to hold a pencil and I used to get comments like that. I listened to them and spent 10 years in a job which payed well but I hated every minute of it. Then my boss went bankrupt and I was out on my ear ... A blessing in disguise! After some running around trying to find a new job, which didn't work, I decided to fully concentrate on art and I love it! I can't wait to get out of bed in the morning. I've had some success, although I'm not rich and probably never will be. I don't care! What's more: all those people who were so dismissive about my artistic aspirations when I was younger, are now ooh-ing and aaaah-ing at my work.... Go figure! :) Don't give up. follow your heart and your instincts and everything will work out. :)

Take a closer look at the people advocating that you give up on your passion. It's likely they did the same. Do you want their life? Let their example help you find your focus.
@jarosbodytko6462

MissCattitude63 It's almost like hearing myself talk when I read your comment :D I used to draw from as long as I can remember, but every choice I made later on in life was always the safest choice, rather than following my heart. And so, instead of concentrating on my art, I took the first job I could find just to pay the bills. You know, 'temporarely'. So, now I'm also stuck in a dead-end job for over a decade that has nothing to do with art (which, worst of all, doesn't even pay well XD), but now I'm working on getting a degree in graphic design and find a career that is fulfilling and makes me want to jump out of bed every morning instead of crawling out hoping to get back home before even leaving my appartment. I don't know what my future holds, maybe all my efforts will be in vain, but I love drawing, I love Photoshop, I love being creative, and that keeps me going. And these video's from Aaron Blaise only convince me that I'm following the right path. The way I see things now: If I have to be poor, I'd prefer to be poor by doing something I love, rather than being poor by doing something I hate XD

those ppl r not you! so you just go and do ur thing, if u want to have a career out of it, then put all of what you got in it, don't pressure yourself and just do it. I myself got into the same situations, i believe all artists in general either painter, animator, singer, dancer or whatever, it brings u down if u would let those ppl control ur future, since its ur future, u control it. If u r looking for a response, u gotta know that u r not obliged to. ignore it.

Hi Mr. Blaise, do you think an artist focusing on visual development needs to have knowledge of animation or a reel as well, or is it unnecessary?

Guys I want to join Disney, I have a bunch of movie ideas I want to be in reality and I feel like I got talent worthy of it (Right now I am writing scripts of movies and a few drawings.) But I am scared that all my hard work will turn up all for nothing. What do I mostly need in order to have a higher chance of getting a position? Any answer will help.
