Great video! I thruhiked the ALT with a friend in August, NOBO as well. That big blowdown/landslide happened during TS Fred in 2021. It really threw us for a loop at first! Took a few minutes to problem solve that one.
That's awesome, I wonder if we were out there at the same time? Lol and I'm glad I wasn't the only one struggling with that maze of downed trees. Thanks for watching and happy hiking!
@@trailtakers9277 it was August 8-11 for us. We hiked in three miles that Monday evening, then had three full HARD days of hiking! Such a struggle at times, but so rewarding, too! Good memories.
Loved the video! Way to go on that second day--super strong mileage and gorgeous views. I just completed a solo SOBO thru hike of the Art Loeb in one-day. It was insanely intense, but so rewarding. Looking forward to checking out your other videos!
@@mghattendorf I'm excited for you! It's such a beautiful trail, though I'd recommend NOBO to keep the epic views as a payoff at the end vs getting those first before tucking into the green tunnel for the remainder of the hike. However, SOBO cuts off 1-2K feet of ascent vs NOBO, so that makes it more realistic for a one-day jaunt. I've done it both ways and definitely prefer NOBO, but doing the ALT at all is a win in my book. Make sure you've got extra water and a filtration system to refill when you come across a source. I live close to this trail, and it is notoriously dry different times of the year. Study the trail through shining rock wilderness as it isn't marked well, and there are plenty of side man-ways made by folks seeking campsites. It's easy to get turned around if you're not familiar with the area. The two shelters on trail were recently torn down and completely rebuilt. They are perfect spots for a rest break and both have pipe springs. The one at Deep Gap is a little bit of a walk downhill from the shelter, but it's reliable. Hope that helps!
Nice video. I most recently did the Loeb last spring, the easy way (southbound). Cold Mountain still eludes me too. It’s almost in my backyard, so I have no excuse. 😂😂
