Silat Suffian Seminar in Minnesota 2016
A successful 3 days Weekend Bruneian Martial Art - Silat Suffian Bela Diri Intensive seminar in MKG Minnesota between the 20th and 22nd May 2016.
Congratulations Master Peter Kwong for organising another successful event.
Thank you to Maser Rick Faye for having us in MKG.
Thank you to Brian J Pike and Adam Rector for your patience in assisting me in my demonstrations and presentations in the event.
Thank you to everyone that made the effort to support the event, those from Illinois, Georgia, Chicago, Maryland, Indiana, Wisconsin, South Dakota, and Mexico. You guys are awesome.
Thank you everyone, with your support and participation this event would not have happened.
My apologies if I miss anyone.
BRUNEIAN MARTIAL HERITAGE
This seminar like my other events aims primarily to raise the curiosity and awareness among people from different nationalities about the martial heritage and culture of Brunei Darussalam in general.

@Ymirson999
@Ymirson999 7 лет назад
I'm certainly no master in Silat, but I did train in it for a while, and I think it would take longer than most. If you trained seriously in muay Thai for six months, you could undoubtedly use it to defend yourself, but Silat would take longer. I'm not saying one is better than the other, but there's a wider range of training in Silat.  Weapons, ground work, etc., and quite honestly, while complexity is usually to be eschewed in martial arts, Silat is rather complex in some of its moves. I would also suggest it's something you should start at a younger age. The range of motion in the moves can be challenging for someone older.
@ArumesYT
@ArumesYT 7 лет назад
You can look at it from a different direction. Because Pencak Silat is such a complex style with a wide variety of moves, there are plenty of moves to choose from for any body type. Just pick the moves that suit your body type best. You don't have to master every aspect of Silat to be a good fighter.

Explained expertly. Using your body's natural armor i.e areas of thick muscle mass to take hits is extremely important. You don't want to get hit but you do want to be able to take it of you do. And no big muscles don't mean you're invincible. It's the structure and relaxation that's key. Love this. Great work

I love Guru Maul silat, so seamless and look effortless yet effective & deadly. When I was a child, it never came to my mind that Brunei has a quality silat. When I grow up and I learn that in the past Brunei Kingdom was way larger than its present size. And it makes sense that to conquer big land area you must have quality combat technique (and also other factors like strategy, strength etc). What Guru Maul possesses and shows is perhaps the reminiscence of the old glorious Brunei Kingdom. Much respect !

Having trained Silat, I know first hand that it is effective and pragmatic. So may principles he talks about are key to all the arts, body structure, wholeness of body movements, effective range etc are all very real and a high level of experience. With this in mind I would like to point out that in reality there is only one moment. Your split second is shared with the other. If the opponent is anywhere near your level, you each get the same one split second. So then we don’t get four movements for the others one. I’m sure the teacher knows this, but observers will misinterpret the static demonstration. South east MA often have a 3 strikes in one time philosophy. But still the split second is just one.
@tlcem075
@tlcem075 4 года назад
Thank you. I was watching and thinking "but no one throws a punch and leave their arm out for 5sec. I would love to see some of these masters use practical application as opposed to the standard static/theory application.
@kma3647
@kma3647 2 года назад
@@tlcem075 Those pauses only exist for demonstration of the technique. The master stops the movement at a point to show you that point. If you're watching this video, I'm seeing him stop at the joint locks - and that's honestly polite terminology. He's really stopping at the point where you destroy the joint and rip bones out of their supporting soft tissue. We often forget these are martial arts. They're military techniques used to help you kill other people. We don't always treat it with that level of respect because of the way martial arts are often taught in the US: for a good workout, highly sanitized for kids, or for sport. When we study an art that honestly doesn't have any of that like silat, we're back to learning how to maim or kill people. And if you want to practice those techniques, you need to know how to protect your training partner so you can both show up at the next practice without injury to train.

I believe it's not limited to the borders of Brunei. When I was growing up in the Malaysian state of Sabah, which shares a border with Brunei, I learned a silat which has a lot of similarities to Maul's Silat Suffian. Most likely it's a regional thing.

+Arista Gaming semua bnda nk claim indon punya. sila claim israel pun dr indon. sbb tu perangai indon mcm israel, pencuri dan pengganas. tp tak pandai mcm israel, cuma bodoh dan tolol. semua claim dr indon, tp negara mundur. timor leste pun tak boleh jaga shingga keluar dr indon. hahahaha

Nice rhythm I do see a lot of taijitsu from the unarmed ninjitsu style in the first half of this video. Never got round to Silat yet but I do like the flow an rhythm of it. 🙏🏻🇬🇧

kalau dari segi teknik dan skill,silat memang power dari kebanyakan martial arts tapi kalau dari segi popularity,silat ketinggalan jauh sebab ramai anak melayu taknak belajar seni bela diri silat ☹️

Silat is the purest of self defence you can get.. All about counter striking.. Ive yet to meet a silat master who teaches to strike first.. Always about self defence and counter strike.. Strikes that could kill or resulting the opponent losing the use of a limb. Very fatal.. Grateful i had the chance to learn this beautiful art of defence..

Actually it because you met a teacher. Not old native fighter. Here in my country the old people are restricted themself to teach the ultimate movement to their silat student who is beginer or intermediate. They only teach the lethal deadly move (which is real) to person who need it on actual master of combatan. And it was same to the teacher. They teach you the silat version of self defence. Because core of silat is to defense against do or die condition. But to attack back lethaly it will go on more more advance level.
