ART OF SAMPLING : JJ JECZALIK LIBRARY on a Fairlight CMI

I started filming this one using the Ensoniq Mirage but I knew if I released this clip in that form all I would get is questions as to why I did not use the Fairlight!
So here it is, playing with some of the sounds from JJ Jeczalik's art of sampling! I used to listen to the Art of Noise records back in the 80's with wonder of how magical and unaffordable the Fairlight CMI was... I never expected to own one!
You can still get the sample set on line and licensed for use if you search around enough.

At the time of Art of Noise's Beatbox everyone wanted the sounds of orch hits, cars, engines, dums & dohs etc. I guess those sounds said "I have a sampler!"

@@motormusic1 Hi there, I don't believe the PSB had made any of their samples publicly available or available for license. I have some of their samples that the person my Fairlight was purchased from was allowed to distribute but that comes with no license to also use. You might want to check the Fairlight CMI IIx library (comes with the Arturia Fairlight I think!) as they used and provided some of the samples for that! :D

These samples sound so robust! You can hear that satisfying low end ring in the doh’s. I always assumed since JJ made them in the early 80’s there would be something crude about them since the technology was new. Wrong! Shout out to Ensoniq also. They made it so even us poor folks could sample.

@@100ThingsIDo You can thank (in part) a wonderful industrial designer named Alan Galt, who is no longer with us. One of the coolest guys I ever met. The CMI is built like a brick...thing. And that's just the frame. And of course, every electronic part can be replaced if need be. Even my 8" floppy drives (and diskettes) still work. Take that, other samplers!

@@sleat indeed, you are very correct. Alan did amazing industrial redesign of the Qasar M8 into what became the Fairlight mainframe, monitor and keyboard. I hope to pay homage to Alans design :D Thanks for dropping by!
@sleat
@sleat 4 года назад
@@100ThingsIDo One thing you may discover in "regirthing" a new CMI mainframe, is that some of the fasteners are custom-made. Alan stressed this when I met with him. The counter-sunk ~2 inch long Phillips-head screws for holding the top, bottom, and sides on are actually a custom design, not standard metric parts. Standard countersunk machine screws won't fit properly. I have a fair few, but if I ran out, I'd literally have to get on the ML-7 and make some. Oh, I should add, old Myfords are a marvel of good ID as well, considering they come from the 1940s. And along those lines, Alan was a mad-keen Jazz-hound. He had an amazing collection. I trust you will have good luck in your efforts!

Hey there, from the image I think I have seen you post a few things on the Facebook Fairlight groups. Andrei Kudryavtsev posted a good thread a while back on using a video scaler to fix the 512x512 issue. You can pick them up very cheap on ebay. Other than that my NEC monitor is the 1880sx I hate to say it but they are quite rare which is why we were hoping Chris Alfred could work some magic. Unfortunately this was not possible with the Fairlights old old Video Card. Once again Andrei knows a few other models that work. feel free to email me at my contact address (check about or drop your name here and I will msg you on facebook) for any further help you need :D

What's the point of owning a Fairlight when you can use an Emulator II? I'm asking this honestly as someone who us a regular EII user. I don't see how they sound any cooler. They seem to sound not as cool, in fact. If I wanted 44.1 samples I'd use a modern sampler. Perhaps you can fill me in here...

Multi Track sequencing, Multi stage analog filters (on sample input as well as each output voice), 16 voices standard each can have a seperate sound or with voice router the sky is almost the limit. Can be used as a DAW, Sound is unlike any other sampler I have used (very thick, fast with lots of Air on the top end). Has full screen monitor with many different pages for voice assignment, sound managment, sequencing etc... ... Its a totally different type of workflow! I do like the EII and most of the E-Mu stuff.. But the Fairlight is very different! :D

I use ( rarely ) the Emulator II Hd , more often a Fairlight Series III/Mfx2, among others like Emulator I , Fairlight IIx. Emu II don' t reach the dynamic of the Series III, EmuII can transpose only 2 octaves... Series III can transpose 10 octaves a single sound. You have much more hi end as you car sample @50khz vs 27 for the Emu II. I personnaly don' t like very much the Emu II. High frequencies sounds fake too. You have 32mb of memory on the S3 vs 512/1mo with the Emu II. Midi has a lot of latency on the Emu II, the sequencer is never in sync. Page R on the S3 is the tighter sequencer ever made. Stereo sampling on the Series III.
