It's always cool when you pause a movie at a random point to do something, and then realize that frame you freezed it in looks so good it could be a painting in a museum

It also didn’t hit me the first time, but Ben was afraid of water since his mom died. That’s what taking off that life jacket means at the end, he’s finally facing his fear for the sake of his sister. Sister he absolutely hated at the beginning of the movie since he considered her responsible for his mother’s death. I love this film.

Oh, one of the few studios that still make 2d cartoons) And this one is beautiful)) I remember watching it when I was a kid, and I really liked it, even though it was kinda strange and unusual.

Just finished rewatching this film recently. Cried a total of 5 times, each lasting at least a good few minutes each. (It really says something too when I haven't been able to shed a tear for most films I've seen, especially within the past few years.)

Cartoon Saloon never misses! So glad you got to watch this film, and I’d really recommend the Secret of Kells, which is that first film you talked about! Tho they share some themes, they’re not connected other than some Easter eggs

“Everyone would want to live in a lighthouse” As an Aussie from the nineties Gen… I can only respond with… “Have you ever? Ever felt like this. Have strange things happen… Are you going Round the Twist” Watch Round the twist by the way. It’s about a family with three kids and a single father who move into a lighthouse. There are ghosts and tree spirits and many strange things. It’s the Australian Goosebumps.

If you liked Song of the Sea, you should check out Cartoon Saloon’s other films too, Secret of Kells, The Breadwinner and Wolfwalkers. Also, idk if you’ve seen this animated film or not but Belladonna of Sadness, it’s an anime film from the 70’s, it’s very beautiful but contains very dark themes like sexual assault and violence.

This movie is brilliant. I don't know anyone else who has watched it. I definitely cried at the end. Love the vibe and the story, but I'm not sure I can watch it again. It pulls at something deep within. Great reaction!

Great reaction. :D It's become one of my go-to comfort movies wheneve. I watched it multiple times before I noticed the parallels between the family's storyline and the fae storyline. It was easy to see the similarities between Macha and the grandmother, but it took me a while to realize the ones between the kids' father and Mac Lir. There's this particularily nice bit of foreshadowing wherein their father is seen in the bar, all hunched over and melancholy and at one point it hit me that he's got the exact same outline as the stone statue. There's this shared theme of dealing with one's feelings rather than avoiding them. And the movie looks just so goshdarn adorable.

ahhhh yes i love this movie and its such a good take on grief and loss just its so pretty and perfect and the music is amazing. also I think the selkie was an amazing choice for the object of grief as I'm not sure if you know this but humans would steal selkies coats so that the selkie would be forced into a relationship with them as selkies were so beautiful any human would fall in love with them, without their coats they cant become seals so when the humans stole their coats the selkies lost their home, friends and family which is something you can kinda see through the movie

Hands down this is my all-time favourite film, for just so many reasons. The animation is beautiful the story is wonderful and that ending just makes me cry every time, no matter how many times I've seen it and I don't cry at films easily. And on top of that there's a deep emotional connection with this film because it's a film with that recognition that features the Irish language in addition to Irish folklore and cultural elements. It's not all anglicised like a lot of films set in Ireland, even a lot that were made in Ireland, fell subject to. And the list goes on there's just so much here that makes this film extremely special and more than just another film. And while it's technically a kids film, it's the kind of film that has intelligent writing and can be enjoyed by all ages, something I've noticed a lot of kids films lately fail to do. I just love this film so much and I'm so glad that you watched it! Also yes those were bonfires in the streets. That goes back to the origins of Halloween with the festival of Samhain (pronounced like Sow+in) which is one of the few days of the year where the veil between our world and the Otherworld is the thinnest and it said that the Faerie (Sídhe - Pronounced like She) folk could cross into our world on that night. It was said that bonfires, or really fire in general, was able to lure in the wandering spirits and send them back to the Otherworld - It's not uncommon of a practice to light a bonfire on the night of Samhain, and in the cities, that often meant in the streets. Additionally, we wear costumes on Halloween because it was believed that certain faerie folk would try to drag children into the Otherworld in revenge for pushing them underground, or so some of the stories say. It's very fitting that most of the story takes place on Halloween, and likewise that that is Saoirse's birthday as she represents a sort of bridge between this world and the Otherworld. And also yes, Macha does look like the grandmother. There are a few characters who have Otherworld parallels, not just Macha and the Grandmother. The ferry captain is paralleled with an Mór Seanachaí (the Great Seanachaí - pronounced More Shawn+Ah+Key), and Conor is paralleled with Mac Lír (pronounced Mak Leer), so you caught onto at least some of that paralleling!

You need to check out some Studio Ghibli movies, particularly Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, and Castle In The Sky. Not only are the stories amazing, but the art and animation are gorgeous.

Ghibli movies are incredible, but not for a RU-vid channel. They are very stingy with their copyright and they've taken down several reaction channels.

Only downside to watching these films out of order is that you miss Aisling's cameo on the bus. Still a bit annoyed she didn't show up in 'Wolfwalkers' at all since it would have been so easy to include, but maybe that's why they didn't...
