Art Supplies: Use What You Have - Acrylic Inks

In this video, I am, once again reaching for an unused art supply that has been languishing in a bottom drawer. After testing and applying the acrylic inks to various substrates I wonder why I stopped using them. Do you have a bottom drawer of art supplies that you should start using?
If you have any thoughts, questions, or comments I'd love to hear them. And if you enjoyed this video please like and subscribe. Thanks so much for watching.

also i wanted to say - I just love this. I am getting very annoyed at how it seems everyone is doing an art haul every two seconds (over exaggerated I know but that is what it feels like to me). It just makes you feel so inadequate because you do not have the latest hand made watercolour pans etc or any art material but you can not afford such luxurious items that they show (which sometimes I think they get for free anyway from the companies, so even worst). There is too much consumerism with art youtubers videos, making you buy more and more STUFF, when you should just use what you have. It is really nice to see that you have put up these videos where you use what you have - that it is ok to use what you have and use it differently. I love how you also show what happens when you do not use these supplies, how they deteriorate, so use them up! If you can afford it, sure go ahead and buy more but I like how you show you do not need to buy more materials unnecessarily. Please provide more information on using existing art supplies in different ways, and help stop this indoctrination to make us believe we have to go out and buy more and more art supplies. I will probably get negative responses for this but as I said if you can afford it go ahead and buy the latest stuff but just staying in these economic climate it is nice to see someone instead showing to use up existing art supplies. thanks Pam

I appreciate all that you said and totally understand and agree. It's easy to fall into the trap of buying the next best thing rather than using what you have. I try to "use what I have" in all parts of my life not just with art supplies--but that is not to say I don't buy new things but I try to be discerning. Obviously, I have bought many art supplies in the past that I no longer use regularly and colors I no longer like--that is part of the process of figuring out your own style. So there will be purchases made that no longer work for the type of art being created. Currently, I add links to my videos in case someone would like to buy a product I'm using but hopefully, my emphasis will always be to encourage the viewer to "use what you have".

I totally agree with you! I have to admit I was kind of guilty of this for a while but when I returned to my painting after a long hiatus (read creative block) I realised I had more art materials and stationery than I thought so yeah I stopped buying so much (also I am buying my own home in a few months so no more art materials or clothes for me). It was for this very reason I searched for tutorials on how to use what I already have and luckily I found Pam and I am so glad I did!

@@sandrafisherhayes3219 It's so easy to just keep buying art supplies--they all look so fun! And I do think it's good to explore and try new things so I don't want to come across like I never buy anything--I'm just trying to be more discerning these days. Congrats on your upcoming home purchase!

@@pamhemmerling thank you Pam ❤ yes it is isn't it? I will revise what I said earlier about not buying any more art materials. I still buy pens and markers and smaller stationery because you know, pens and markers always run out don't they? I won't buy large canvases because I don't have the space for them. I am however upcycling my old journals and using those as art journals and sketchbooks.

Hi Pam! I am really enjoying your tutorials. I love your sense of humor, your willingness to show us your explorations with materials, and how you say things many of us say privately like “I guess I should have stopped but what the heck” and you just go on experimenting. You are very talented and fun to boot. My kind of person.

I add water to a canvas and put drops of color into a small cup of water and use them like fluid art and love the effects. I do lots of layers letting each layer dry in between and mixing some colors to blend and it makes a very beautiful painting.

I find it very liberating to play with art supplies I intend to get rid of-it’s all play; no pressure to make something amazing; no fear that I’m wasting art supplies. It’s play, but essential play.

Remember to soak your brush water in an acrylic cloth to dispose and clean brushes as solid plastic waste -When the acryilic paint water goes down the sink or toilet then microplastics can get into the ground water. Treatment plants cannot get them out ! Eco Peace everyone!

Unfortunately some colors of that brand of acrylic inks are chunky brand new. I bought white and it had terrible chunks so thinking I just got a bad one I bought another and guess what…. Chunks!!! So frustrating!

could you name 20 colours for a beginner please.i dont know which colours to buy. i love pinks, reds and greens.?
@pamhemmerling
@pamhemmerling Месяц назад
Hi Heini, the only specific colors I would recommend would be black, white, and raw umber. Beyond that, I suggest choosing a few of your favorite colors to get started--a pink, red, green for example. Once you know that you like using them you could branch out from there with more diverse colors. Another option would be to buy a set of inks. Hope that helps.

I love art, AND poetry and believe literature and poetry is also someone's art. I sometimes buy old, used poetry books. To have and read. Even old, falling apart, yellowing ones! But I DO I collect old and ready to toss matte paper pieces/magazines, etc, for this type of purpose you are doing here. (From antique and thrift stores.) In Pam's defense, perhaps it IS good to use in this way I suppose if people were really about to toss it into the landfill, etc. Also, I had a literature professor that was on the lookout for long lost copies of certain authors, out of print, etc. I love literature! My only hope in sharing this is to remember there are those that love the older poems for use even in a junk journal, where you could still read the words, etc. I did gasp when I saw that, not even meaning to. Also, not trying to be "judgy" here. I caught myself talking out loud about alternative options, lol. So just adding my two cents here. I did buy a watercolor book that stated in its content that it could be used later FOR water coloring over! I loved that invitation from the author to do such things. I do love acrylic inks and love what you shared here. Thank you for that, Pam.
