We have had so many questions and suggestions regarding our artesian well that we thought we would GO BACK IN TIME to before our build and share a video dedicated to explaining how we finally fixed the overflow problem that was continually flooding our build site and creating problems! Up until this final fix we had tried a few 'temporary' fixes which in all honesty, didn't do all that much and the overflow absolutely had to be remedied before we could begin building our unconventional off grid earth sheltered house!
Note that this is a perfectly acceptable resolution for where we live, but where you live the rules may be different!
Original Video where we fix the surface, ground, and artesian well problems prior to beginning our house build: • OFF GRID Build WELL PU...

▬ ABOUT US ▬
We are Rich & Kathie, a retired couple building our dream home: A SUPER ENERGY EFFICIENT OFF GRID earth sheltered home in the Adirondacks!
The house will be covered with about 30" of soil which helps to maintain an internal temperature between 45 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit in winter & summer respectively. This means that in the winter we will only need minimal heat that we plan to provide with a small wood burning stove and we shouldn't need any air conditioning in the summer at all!
With inflation right now, the energy efficiency of this house is a HUGE Plus! But, it also means that we have a super tight budget that is getting tighter by the day. For this reason we DIY everything we reasonably can and find creative ways to save money such as repurposing.
Please subscribe and join us to see how we manage the challenges of staying in budget and exactly how energy efficient this house actually is when it is done!
We appreciate all your support :-)

Well that's an enviable situation to be in! We have contemplated the situation of no electricity and what we would need to do to get water. It seems there is no easy solution for our dilemma in an arid climate like ours. Having water is a blessing and you have most certainly been blessed with this water issue that you have now tamed.
@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid
We do feel so blessed...and we have multiple ways to source it as well. I forget how deep you said your pump is, but we have been getting water out of our well for years with no electric...so I might have a few ideas for you.

You guys did good. My neighbor decided to build his house on an acre lot. He in his 60s and now wished he hired a contractor. Lol He finally got it far enough along to move in. His wife just about had it living in a travel trailer. Lol
@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid
It’s not easy! The travel trailer definitely gets to you after a while!

It looks very pretty out. Just think in a couple month it will be black fly season:)
@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid
Oh those pesky black flies!!!! They are bad in the woods but really don't bother us in the clearing at all, especially if there is a breeze.

You could have extended the 4" well pipe another 4' aboveground and the air pressure would have kept the well from running over. Installing a 4" 4way pipe at the base of the well you could have reduced it down functioning for your home without the generator. If you need more psi an inline pump is a lot cheaper than the well pump.

We did think about that but we aren’t artesian year round. In fact we drilled he well during a drought. And 5 gallons a minute is a little slow….

Hi, and great video. I’m in a house with an artesian well overflow also. Been here since 89, but looking to improve on the job that was done initially. Do you know what that fitting is called that you put on the end of your run off line so nothing (rodents) can enter the line? Thanks.
@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid
@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid 8 месяцев назад
Hi. It’s actually a check valve that we modified by taking the valve out and leaving just the screen.

We did extend our well pipe to 4'. It still over flows, It makes our sump pump run all the time. Our sump pump pipe is buried to the ditch. The ditch is always flooded, making our neighbors angry. Please help.

Sorry, I am woefully late to viewing this video, but regarding the artesian line, in the winter is it freezing and thus causing water to be blocked and backing up into the upper portion of the well casing..? Also, is there any concern with contamination (bacterial or otherwise) thru the artesian line. Thank you.
@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid
@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid 11 месяцев назад
Actually those are the reasons we did what we did. It’s below the line for the house so no interference there. The artesian pipe could freeze at the very end where it comes to daylight but as long as the flow continues it shouldn’t (and didn’t last winter). We do have plans to add insulation above the pipe near the end to protect it as well.

does the overflow ever freeze up and plug off the flow?
@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid
Before we did this it froze every winter but never stopped the flow. After doing this we honestly haven’t had any problems that we know of but it was pretty much flowing out of the pipe all winter… as long as it’s flowing we’re good
@ianh.7822

Flowing well packer would have solved the problem with a fraction oof the effort
@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid
@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid 19 дней назад
Maybe, but it would have cost a lot more and if it ever fails water would back into our home. This may have been more effort but it was less cost, and our home is protected.
