The W&N painting looks better because the colors are more cohesive, which is one of main benefits of using limited palettes I think. Arteza sets come with so many colors, and beginners will tend to use paint straight from the tube
@keilamarciel
@keilamarciel Год назад
Agreed. I recommend the Arteza set for beginners to help them kind of choose a palette that works for them. Also to make sure they enjoy working with gouache before investing in a more expensive set of tubes. But I definitely see what you’re saying. Good point. 👍👍

In my area we have a lot more and better option for artist grade non-Asian made gouche brands that are half or third price of the hell expensive W&N: Renesans, Umton, Saint Petersburg and my favorite PANNONCOLOR Made in Budapest, HU. I have a nice collection of W&N gouache paints, they are fantastic but no way they are (much) better than these brands. If you happen to visit these countries i highly recommend to buy gouache from local stores here.

Thanks so much for letting us all know about these brands! I actually have not heard of any of those, but next time I'm abroad I will definitely be keeping my eye out for them! 👍👍

I actually bought the Winsor and Newton Introductionary set about a week ago, and I never knew how much I was gonna love these paints! I've never used gouache before and after many youtube videos I settled on W&N. Will definitely be buying some other colors I would like to have just to have more options 😊 beautiful paintings btw!

@@ShadamyLover15 Awww thank you! & I’m so glad to hear that you’re enjoying the W&N set! It was my first set of gouache and it’s definitely the reason I fell in love with using it! 🥰

Love the art! Arteza is great however they don't have a good primary magenta in any set so if youre gonna go with arteza buy a tube of artist magenta to get better mixes for purples and oranges. Also arteza ia a lot of multi pigment mixes which can mix muddier colours and obviously they wont be as lightfast.
@keilamarciel
@keilamarciel Год назад
Great point about the magenta! I hadn’t really noticed how muddy my purples were with Arteza until I broke out my W&N gouache set again to compare them 😅 This is really good information, thanks so much for sharing!

the "rose" color for Arteza gouache is pretty much the "primary magenta" in the sets. Mix it with Ultramarine blue and you get a good purple. you don't need to get a magenta from another brand since Rose is pretty much that color
@discretelyobvious
@discretelyobvious 9 месяцев назад
@@TRANSSENTIENT except it's not. the rose from arteza contains multiple pigments and when mixed with yellows and blues lead to muddy and muted colours. theres not a true pv19 in the entire set which is a standard mixing magenta. trust me i've tried the arteza rose for mixing and it's not good for clear mixes. the closest colour in the set would be peach red but its extremely transparent and fugitive. rose would most closely resemble a pr122 paint, but the pv23 thats included leads to the mixes being more muddy. a true primary magenta is literally the only colour i ever found missing other than that their sets are pretty decent and i enjoy some of their unique tube mixes
@TRANSSENTIENT
@TRANSSENTIENT 9 месяцев назад
@@discretelyobvious pr122 Quinacridone Magenta is typically the standard for magenta, while pv19 is the standard for rose or violet (there are some exceptions). Tbf none of the colors in arteza gouache are good for clear mixes, since most of the colors are made with two or more pigments. What I’m trying to say in my previous comment is that the rose color in arteza is closer to a magenta from W&N, Holbein or Schmincke, most professional pr122 magentas, than any other color in the set, that’s all

I like the Arteza one way better. It’s punchy and saturated. The WN one looks dull, almost faded.
@keilamarciel
@keilamarciel 3 месяца назад
Yeah! Isn’t it crazy what a difference there is?! I know some people like to go for those muted tones in their work, so they’d probably like the WN. I have found that Arteza gouache is super vibrant, I love it.

Hullo Keila, thanks for sharing your thoughts and comparison of these two gouaches. I am always wondering about longevity when buying the less expensive options for art supplies. Is Arteza going to last? I have seen their pigment information/lightfastness on the tube but not how they test it? I have several artworks that I have from when I just started out and I took the cheaper route and they have not held up well. I know that you made this video over a year ago, but I am curious about your current situation. Do you still use the Arteza products? I am just as curious about the way that you are holding your brush, you can do whatever makes you feel comfortable, I am aware of working over the long haul and holding your brushes and pencils in the “fist grip” can lead to problems in later life. You might look into a more relaxed grip, just a little something to think about for yourself and your comfort as you continue with your art/life journey. I hope I get the chance to see more of your videos and artworks! Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.

Are the Arteza available open stock? If you run out of a most used colour and you need to buy a full set to replace it, that can work out very expensive.
@keilamarciel
@keilamarciel 10 месяцев назад
Sadly no. They only offer their paints in sets of 12 or more. That’s why I mostly recommend them for people just starting out with gouache to see if it’s something they like.

I love this review. It gave me some great information. I paint awards in the Society for Creative Anachronism using gouache paints, and we're always on the lookout for good paints for our beginners. Generally, most of the painters I know try more for recreating the look of medieval manuscripts, which is why many go for the more professional grade paints like Windsor Newton. How lightfast would you say the Arteza paints are? If they don't tend to fade, these would be a great alternative for beginners on a budget.

@keilamarciel 11 месяцев назад
Wow! That's so awesome to hear! Thanks for watching, I'm glad it could help in some way! The Arteza paints are definitely not archival... But I can say that I have had some of my paintings framed on my wall for over 5 years with no fading from the FL sun and they are right next to photos I printed with my Canon printer that do show some fading.

I sooo loved your review. I bought Arteza. I bought the arteza “ tackle box” and didn’t like all of the fluorescent colors. I then bought the portrait set of 12 and these mixed very well to give me a better range of acceptable colors.

hi i really love how "messy" the paper edge looks. how did you tear it?
@keilamarciel
@keilamarciel 2 месяца назад
@@lizn160 Thanks, I love that look too! Hopefully I can describe this well… you’ll need a T-shaped ruler. Lay it across a large piece of paper with the top of the T on the tables edge. Hold the flat (usually metal) part of the ruler down against the table firmly as you tear the paper for a straight edge. Hope this helps!! 🫡

You painted the W&N with a larger brush and more careful strokes…. Also, you didn’t make an effort to mix the same colors. That could have been achieved. Biased, unfair review/comparison.
@keilamarciel
@keilamarciel 7 месяцев назад
Hmmm interesting reaction... I'm not telling people to buy one over the other though. I think BOTH are great options. I made the video to really show how well Arteza gouache holds up against a much pricier brand. I think I mixed the colors pretty well considering I only had primary colors in the W&N. Also, I used the same TWO brushes for both paintings. Thanks for watching... but doesn't seem like you were paying much attention lol. 😅
