The red/yellow/blue, black, earth tones and also the white are not sold as graphite. They are described as pressed pigment, water-soluble tailor shape blocks. The graphite block is the only one with graphite content. These are essentially the same thing that's in artist quality watercolor pencils, with a bit higher pigment content. They're really very nice and a fairly unique product. But the idea people have of ArtGraf only making graphite products makes these a bit misleading to some. They're watercolor blocks, not graphite.

Very useful information. Thank you. It didn't make sense to me that they could actually be graphite and then perform like watercolors. Guess I was on the right track. They look nice, and I like the idea of the earth tones since I do a lot a nature sketching.

Don’t know where you found that I can’t find it on there website and the amazon page description is”Set of 3 rich pigmented graphite blocks in primary colors” There web page is pretty poor in Portuguese and English. It makes sense not to be graphite.

I love ArtGraf products, but as Lily noted, these are not graphite. They do have a great selection of water soluble graphite, though, which is really awesome. Derwent has some great coloured water soluble graphite in the Graphitint and XL Graphite for those looking for something similar that is graphite-based. I love those too, the colours are muted and really well suited to landscapes.

Hi, I actually have this set. I bought it after trying some water soluble graphite pencils (Derwent) and sticks (Lyra Rembrandt). I really like them but I treat them pretty much like watercolors. I managed to mix a pretty wide range of colors including a variety of lovely brown and gray shades. You can get a lot of different greens and oranges as well, but I wasn't able to get a true violet or purple shade. Just a sort if muted mauve tone shown in your video. If I feel I need a more purple tone, I just use watercolor or grab one of my Derwent Graphitint pencils. You can also get more opaque shades by mixing using more pigment and less water. They dry matte, but not chalky. I have no idea of colorfastness since I use these on coloring printed on watercolor or mixed media paper, so they stay in a looseleaf binder. I don't usually display my work, so colorfastness is not an issue for me.

These keep getting recommended to me ever since I reviewed some water soluble graphite pencils, and water soluble graphite has confused me as to its purpose. These, especially, since they’re not particularly convenient to sketch with and end up being best utilized, essentially, like large watercolor pans that can’t be reactivated. I’m glad you reviewed these because it helps sate my curiosity but sort of reinforces the idea that there really just isn’t a place for them in my life. Now I won’t be tempted!

tip: you can mix sanguine from the earth tones palette with the blue to create an indigo blue that's dark. These are fabulous. I just ordered some after watching your videos. I completely love how they're transparent but can be made to be opaque. These are especially good when using them to layer your color mixes. They're far easier to navigate than gouache.

I actually just learnt this, it's the same method as using a watercolor pencil but I'm not sure if it works well. If u guys didnt know, you could also use paper as ur palette if u don't want to dirty the graphites. By applying the graphite in the paper u can imitate a watercolor palette although it would be not that much and also too much water soaks the paper
@magical571
@magical571 3 месяца назад
you always hear that, but it's such an unnecesary waste of money, just get some good double primary watercolor palette on any of the brands like daniel smith, m graham, shminke, rembrandt, etc and you are set. The rest is just qurqy wastes of money or just indulging for the sake of curiosity (which i understand lol, but still)

Wow. Good the transparency and colours. Since this is graphite does it smudge, both when used like a pencil or like watercolour? Can it be erased in either form? Seems like you can layer it watercolour style easily so does that mean it is hard to lift the colour with water? Sorry for all the questions. Seems like a very interesting product i may want to try.

I have the Carbon Black and the Brown and love them. However, it is impossible to find lightfastness and pigment information about these. That usually does not bode well, since companies are always happy to boast about lightfastness if the product is lightfast! If you can get any information on the pigments, please let us know. I've been so tempted to get more of them; they are great for plein air work, but I'm not going to let myself buy more unless I find out they are lightfast. In the meantime, I'm going to put swatches of the ones I have in my window for a few months. Maybe you could do the same with the colors, and give us an update on whether or not they fade!

I haven't thrown it in a sink of water, for example, but it doesn't hurt it to work with the paints directly out of the box as you would any other watercolor palette, and it's okay to even give an extra messy box a wipe down or quick rinse under the tap as long as you dry it off afterwards.
