How to cut ailerons and flaps in the new Arthobby wings with internally hinged ailerons and flaps, not a big deal and absolutly nothing to be afraid of :)
First cut must be at the underside of the ailerons….., and overside of the flaps.

Very good instruction on how to properly complete the ailerons, making use of the embedded textile hinges. 👍

Thanks. Although I would use a dremel router bell that you guide along a ruler to have a cleaner cut, make the opening about 8mm and then close both sides of the exposed styro with balsa wood that you then sand into shape. Much stronger and much cleaner. With your technique, you have an open end for the wing skin that reduces the wings rigidity and with your flap articulated on the skin, all the strain is on the small part of the skin and glue. If you close it both ends you have a much longer lasting setup that will also be more resistant to harsh slope landings.

They say that "experience is something you don't have until AFTER you need it". Well, I have experience in cutting an ArtHobby aileron now and I can say with certainty that my Skua will have an external hinge. :) I went through the internal hinge without realising it, probably when cutting from the top. I could feel the difference in the knife when cutting from the bottom when I hit (what I think was) the aramid. But I felt nothing when cutting from the top and went through half of the aramid before I realised what I had done. I will use the other aileron as further practice. The hinge material is very thin and embedded i balsa/popplar and it is so easy to go through it. Despite watching this excellent video beforehand.

Good video, can you do one showing how you finish the wing surface please? I would be interested in seeing what product you choose and how to apply. Thanks Kiwi Phil

First I use water/alcohol, then sanding, then Arthobbys lacquer, sanding, lacquer, sanding. Done. And no lacquer where the fiberglass for the wing assembly will be placed.And the fiberglass is glued with the epoxy that was in the kit.No big deal :)This is not my glider and it is all ready out of town, so it is not easy to make the video :)

Hi, I am considering getting this model, when you're using the saw, are you going through the vener? or just scoring it, and is that then the hinge, a thin piece of vener?
@SpeedsterDEN
@SpeedsterDEN Год назад
I am going through the vener, and just under there is armid tape as hinge, but with some care you can hear when there is no more vener, then the sound change a soft tone to a scratch tone :)

Very helpful video! Soren, could you please tell me what type of blade is it?
@SpeedsterDEN

I use a normal scalpel, and the roundet blade is just a normal blade that I have rounded on a grinding machine :)

Although it's nice to have these tutorials, this cutting can go seriously wrong too. ArtHobby told me it takes them five minutes to cut a flap/aileron. I would gladly pay 10 dollars more per model or wing to have them cut it for me. The spectre of cutting straight through is terrifying, so why expect every builder to do it if they can do it much more confidently and reliably?
@SpeedsterDEN
@SpeedsterDEN Год назад
I don't think that even they can do it in five minutes :)

I wonder why arthobby don't have the flaps and airlerons precut?

Hello, I wanted to know, for the fins of the Odyssey glider, where is the Aramid strip? on the side of the intrados or extrados? Thanks in advance

That's really interesting. What material is the final hinge?
@SpeedsterDEN
@SpeedsterDEN 6 лет назад
The hinge is inside the wing, as I recall it is armid
@wordreet
@wordreet 6 лет назад
Ah, I get it. They've layered the wing so that if you want to cut just so, you reveal that aramid layer and it creates the hinge. I just looked up aramid and it's also called Nomex.(which is used in fire proof cloth)

Hey Soren, I've been inspired by your videos and I'm considering buying an Odyssey from Arthobby. Was this video of a similar wing? I definitely want flaps as well as ailerons, it's what I'm used to.
