I loved Dudley Moore RIP he was really funny he played Arthur brilliantly I got so mad when they got that plonker Russell brand to play Arthur it was rubbish they should have left the movies alone same as pink panther Peter sellers RIP was Inspector clouseau Steve Martin tried his best but he failed miserably in the role he just didn’t have the nuance and comedic ability to pull it off
I am 58You could definitely do a lot more s*** If a guy got out of line in a bar you could punch his lights out without Going to jail or getting sued We jumped our bikes off of suicide jumps Played with lawn darts And what the hell was a seat belt I used to ride in between the buckets seats We Build forts the woods Those were pretty good times
I'm 68 so obviously I lived in the 80s, but I refuse to be one of those people that constantly whine about how good things were back in the day. Things are always better when you are young.
This great movie and music brings back so many lovely memories. In my opinion, the 80s was much happier and simple. Why don't we all turn the clock back. PERMANENTLY....😅. Well, we can dream.
I have lived long enough to say two particular decades were very special. They are the 1950s and 1980s. They both have in common that they were periods of great optimism and the music reflects this upbeat spirit. Of couse, ironically, "Back to the Future" was a classic movie that welded these two decades together. Even when "Back" was produced, they sensed that the 50s and 80s had a lot of similar dynamics. Treasure your memories.
It's a comedy but a very great love story..about a man who was ready to give up his millions and be poor just to be with the person he loves .. THAT'S LOVE!!
I was 14 when this movie came out . Times and everything else seemed magical. I do remember thinking what an obsene amount 750Million Dollars was. (I was only 14 and I did say seemed magical) .
Pure talent, saw this 43 years ago. Still my favorite move. ( I was 10, I had to sneak in. I remember I thought it looked funny ) As I aged and every time I rewatch it I learn more about my on life)
Father to daughter: So tell me about this new guy you're dating. What does he do? Daughter: Oh, he doesn't have a job. Father: Oh, great, another unemployed bum. Daughter: He doesn't need to work, Daddy, he's a millionaire! Father: You have my permission to marry him.
Amazing song! Only BURT could write these kind of melodies. Timesignature and intervalls. Thank you great master of writing these teriffic songs! A deep respect and Bow!! R.I.P. BURT 😪💔
The year I left school and started work, what a film, Dudley Moore was amazing so was the music, written and produced by Burt Bacharach and sung by Christopher Cross , The 80’s were a unbelievable Decade, never be Beaten 😊
Dudley Moore, a luminary of laughter and a virtuoso on both the piano and the silver screen, cast spells with his comedic brilliance and profound acting. From the uproarious "10" to the endearing "Arthur," he painted characters with depth, each stroke a testament to his versatile talent. As the piano keys fell silent due to progressive supranuclear palsy, so too did the curtain descend on his acting career. Yet, his legacy remains eternally vibrant-a dual masterpiece of laughter and poignant performances that continues to echo in the hearts of those who found solace in his humor and were moved by the depth of his on-screen portrayals. RIP Dudley Moore
So beautiful and I get too emotional. Tribute to Burt, to me this is his very best. Also, yes, can be a bit silly, but will we still see such a feel good film like this, away from politics etc, ever again?
Actually my favorite part of the film is when the butler is ill and knows he doesn't have much time left. Arthur takes care of him in those final days, feeds him, does everything for him. For the first time in his life Arthur is needed to care for someone else instead of the other way around. Someone is depending on Arthur to step up and he finds he likes the responsibility. I've walked in those shoes and I have to admit it's life changing. We all hope to find lovers and friends who will love us but it's actually just as important for us to find someone for us to love back. Caring for someone else, being needed, that feeling is amazing!
It's pretty well regarded, maybe a classic, it was a big hit when it came out. Its treatment of Arthur's drinking might seem a bit shocking today because it's played for laughs during most of the movie, but the script makes it clear that he drinks because he's unhappy and lonely. It's very much a fairy tale / screwball comedy and the cast is great!
I don't think it's considered a "classic" but who cares? I've seen plenty of "Classic" movies which were, to be frank, absolute garbage. In my humble opinion it is a wonderful film, alternately funny and moving in equal measure and featuring standout performances from both Dudley Moore (who somehow makes a childish drunk seem loveable) and John Gielgud (who somehow makes a stuffy, cantankerous foul-mouthed butler seem kindly and lovable). Even if you don't love it as much as I do, it won't be a waste of 90 minutes, I promise"
