Surprised, we see so little of him on TV today. A groundbreaking man.

I would watch tennis with my father when I was a teenager. I played too but was not so great. I remember the 1975 Wimbledon. The final came and everyone in my school supported Jimmy Connors. I supported Arthur. I was so excited when he won the opening game. My Dad said..it is the last game that matters. I still remember that. Arthur is a legend for me.

What an erudite, interesting man he was, in addition to being a fantastic tennis player. If there were more people like Arthur Ashe the world would be a much better place.

The man who break the barriers for tennis hasn't gotten as much respect as he should have.

I remember watching him play in a tournament in Cleveland when I was young. My grandmother took me. She said it was a privilege to see him play in person.

He settled his beefs with his fists and his mind. Amazing intellect. His physical down of Bill Cosby and former un ambassador Andrew young is so legendary. He hit like a young sugar ray robinson. Andrew young once said angrily after a beat down.that Arthur Ashe was so sweet he give me diabetes

I actually study interviewers, and I have been extremely impressed with this show Bob did. His non-sports interviews were superb. His interview with Paul McCartney was the best interview I've ever seen with McCartney. He thoroughly researched his subjects. But not only that, he was able to build up the perfect understanding of their context --- he nailed it every time.

@@HomeAtLast501 Many years ago when I would see Costas on TV I was rather dismissive, probably because back then he was doing all sports. But since becoming a RU-vid junkie a couple years ago I've really come to appreciate his skills as an interviewer. At the same time I have leveled some harsh criticism at other interviewers who I thought weren't up to the task. As far as sports figures go, I think the interview Costas did with Mickey Mantle was superlative. And when it comes to a former Beatle, it's kind of ironic that my favorite John Lennon interview of all time was when in 1974 he appeared on Howard Cosell's radio show called "And Speaking of Everything." They discussed the legal challenges Lennon was facing to stay in the country (Cosell was a lawyer), and it was interesting as hell. It was obvious that they liked and respected each other, and Lennon never sounded so clear-minded and articulate. And as everyone knows, six years later it was Cosell who interrupted his Monday Night Football duties to announce that Lennon had been shot. Lennon also in 1974 made a guest appearance with Cosell in the announcer's booth during a Monday night game, in which he gave his impression of seeing an American football game in person for the first (and I assume last) time. He seemed really pleased to be there.

Having this interview interrupted by a home security system commercial featuring Snoop Dogg is about as insulting as it gets.

Ashe had a terrific temper. Arthur Ashe once spit on Ed Koch when Koch closed a Harlem hospital. Also Arthur Ashe once punched Lillian Carter in the stomach when she cut in front of Arthur and his family during a White House state dinner honouring Zimbabwe’s independence.
