The recording of Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor, Op. 21, performed by Arthur Rubinstein, is an eternal masterpiece. Rubinstein represents the musical hero for countless pianists, capturing the essence of Chopin's work with impeccable technique and profound expressiveness. Every movement of this concerto is an emotional journey, a musical tale that connects the listener to the most intimate parts of the soul. His interpretation, a bright beacon in the world of music, inspires generations of artists and enthusiasts, leaving an indelible mark in our minds and hearts. Thank you, Maestro, for making history and for always inspiring us with your art.
There are so many great Chopin performences, but Rubinstein continues to be as rellevant as ever. I always go back to his recordings - perfect and everlasting.
listen to other performances trust me he is nothing special his timing is the worst I have ever heard totally overated he aint no richter thats for sure or zimmerman
My father tuned for Artur Rubinstein at East Carolina college. Mr Rubinstein knelt down to shake my hand, as my father introduced me to him. I was 5 years old. I didn't fully realize the gravity of the moment, but I knew it was special !!
How grateful l am that l attended a performance of this Concerto when a student in London, having saved hard to get the price of a ticket. Now at 83, l have never heard better musicianship,as every note is a treasure…..Ceri Long
A local orchestra (which included a lady who later became one of my profs) prepared all week for the Maestro to arrive for the run through before the evening's concert. They begin the intro. He waves for them to stop. "What is that you're playing?" Such and such concerto was the reply. "That is not what I prepared!" Stunned silence. He closes his eyes, flutters his fingers over the keyboard a minute or two. Looking up at the conductor says "all right, go ahead".
Oh yes: As long as music and the piano endure, Arthur Rubinstein will be around. Rubinstein is way up there not only in Chopin’s music, but in any music he plays.
Perhaps at age 12, as a piano student, my parents took me to a Rubenstein concert in Washington, D.C. What an experience! (I'm 73 now)...not just the wonderful music, but also the vivid charm of his manners, dress, movements on stage, graciousness towards the audience and pure dignity. The video is impressive, but only a faint echo of being there. The first record I bought myself was a recording of AR's Chopin noctures. What a gift to the music loving world.
I am also 73 and also went to hear Rubenstein in Washington. it was with the National Symphony and I think I was about 15 and I think Rubenstein played the Schumann Concerto. I'm pretty sure Howard Mitchell conducted the orchestra.
A nice experience, I'm sure ! But it is sad to admit thats all people leaving comments on that video are over 60... What are youngers loving and listening today, Rap ? Those have nothing to do with Rubinstein... that's a great preoccupation for me and future new artists. Who will be able to play Chopin that way in fifty years ?... I don't know. But we have to stay optimistic.
@@jean-pierrepericaud8224 My grandaughter fell in love with classical music when she was 6. She is 20 and plays classical celo and is a music therapist. Her friends hate rap. Its not so bleak as one woukd think. Florida State , her alma mater was a wonderful environment for fostering a love of serious music.
When I was 12, My Mom took me to my 1st Carnegie Hall concert during its 75th Anniversary celebrations. Rubinstein was on the program and my Mom took me backstage to meet him post concert. That's when I learned that my maternal Grandfather knew him. He and my Mom had a chat and Mom have me an unforgettable memory.
Chopin moves me and fills my senses like no other. This concerto is my absolute favourite piece of his. The emotions race and tumble downstream, then gently flow into a calm lake softly lapping at the water’s edge. Clouds float by, birds sing in the trees, love is in the air, I feel peace and contentment. He breaks my heart and then I am in love again. Love never dies in his music, he always gives us hope and a sense of purpose. Do you feel it too?
Longevity and Chopin seemed to be linked in my family. My grandmother Elizabeth Mulfinger practiced her Chopin every morning for two hours well into her upper 90’s and passed away at 102. George Mulfinger her teacher at Syracuse University and husband who Studied with Emil von Sauer, passed away at 88.
Yes....God is in this music...it is full of love! The second movement had been going through my head for a couple of weeks now. I think it was in an old movie about Nazi Germany i saw on TCM. A violinist was playing the tune and the Gestspo asked if it was Wagner....he said yes to save his skin. It was implied Chopin was banned becsuse of the beauty and hope. Chopin made me cry today....too much beauty for a heart to hold!
They did the absolute right thing by choosing Andre Previn to conduct. Previn is a genius and he really showed his musicianship by REALLY understanding Rubinstein’s interpretation with respect.
The best word I can find for this wonderful performance is "dignified". So calm, completely "non-ego", really putting the music into the centre. And finally not rushing it, really playing music, not showing off virtuosity. Thank you for sharing.
Nothing fits this performance better than what Robert Schuman said about Frederic Chopin "Hats off, gentlemen, a genius !". Thank you for this moment of grace and beauty
@@danielkristianson208 thank you for correcting this historical mistake; I think that it also applies to Chopin for composiing this concerto and to Maestro Rubinstein for playing it so well.
You are quite right. I quote from Joan Chissell's book on Schumann. (Page 198) as follows: 'His enthusiasm for Chopin dates from his first article of 1831, containing the now famous sentence: 'Off with your hats, gentlemen--a genius,' and in all his subsequent writings he acknowledges Chopin as a true representative of the 'new poetic age'. ALSO: in Judith Chernak's book on Schumann, the Faces and the Masks (page 258) she writes: ''New Paths'' could be seen as a companion piece to Schumann's early review of Chopin's "Mozart" Variations, in which he hailed Chopin as a genius." To all lovers of Chopin's music I would recomnend your acquiring the Alan Walker's biography of Chopin entitled 'Fryderyk Chopin....A Life and Times' available both in hardback and softback. A fantastic , comprehensive read , illustrated and including extracts from his compositions.
I distinctly remember the first day I played the cassette of Chopin's Piano Concerto #2,and heard the Larghetto.I nearly cried, because it was just so beautiful.Frederic Chopin.Nothing more to be said.
This music takes me back to my childhood in South Africa . Cycling to my piano lessons. Learning Chopin and he was my favourite composer then . I still feel transported back in time when I hear Chopins music. It is very emotional and sometimes it makes me sad as I remember the happy times with my siblings.
If I can to see Previn and Rubinstein together in this Chopin concert is amazing and great gift for my life. I want tosee them forever..Thanks from Chile.
Rubinstein allows the composer to speak directly without problems of any kind to get in the way. Immaculate technique and gentleness are the hallmarks of his playing; his like comes this way very rarely. The most marvellous pianist I ever heard in my youth. RIP dear Maestro
Listening to this in honor of Chopin’s birthday! No one can play Chopin like Arthur Rubenstein; He has the best recordings of Chopin’s music in my opinion!!!👏👏👏
The greatest interpreter, invoker of Chopin's works to have come along. No one could ever render Chopin's melodies in this way. Chopin shall forever be proud that his music is immortalised by Arthur Rubinstein's fingers 🙏
@@jiimbow Being a compatriot of Chopin does give him that edge, yet he also went back to the drawing board and did the rudimentary work of honing his skill when he felt that his playing became sloppy. As for timing, the man is 88 years old over here and still possesses a profound quality of touch, sonority and affection. There is something ethereal about his playing of Chopin that I find in no other pianist. I am not trying to persuade you to believe as I do. After all, to each their own.
Last year I was in the Polish city of Łódź where Rubinstein was born. In the main street there is a statue of him, and in the City museum there is a cast of his hands.
No kidding. I hope I can even get up from my chair, much less still play a musical instrument decently if I make it to 88 or beyond.... he was so vibrant.
I'm 24 and adore Chopin. This piece definitely has to be up there with one of my favourites. Hope to get to see it performed one day. Chopin's music will continue to captivate people of all ages for centuries to come!
Inimitabile Rubinstein 🙏
Chef's kiss! Rubinstein is the master of melody in my eyes. His control of voicing always allows the instrument to sing in the most glorious ways. I am so glad I found this rendition!
It is incredible how this man can play such a piece of music without sheets! The amount of work put in to play the piano in that way. He is fantastic. I bow to him
@@gbeachy2010idk if you’re being sarcastic but it’s just something to understand, that memorizing the piece isn’t that hard for musicians. It’s like ballet, you don’t marvel during the ballet (ballets are long!) that they know what step to do next. I’m the most amateurish musician ever but as a kid I could easily learn music. (Memorize even seems like the wrong word partially).
@M SC you must be so proud of your abilities, well, actually you said so. Too bad you can't decipher sarcasm with certainty. There are things that come easy to some people but are difficult if not impossible to others. Have a little compassion for those less fortunate. Your original comment was snarky, just so you know.
It very difficult to express my feelings towards this phenomenal artist Artur Rubinstein, because he was just simply the best pianist who had roamed on this earth. Listening to him give me so much pleasure and joy. I can go on listening for ever this Maestro Rubinstein. Thanks for the great sound.
@@jiimbow hallo Jim, you may be right in your opinion, je suis d‘accord, but to me at that momentan when I saw him performing on a tv, I felt he was genius playing his piano so amazingly good.
I auditioned before the great Rubinstein in Los Angeles as a child as a member of the National Fraternity of Student Musicians at about age 9. I did not know who he was then, except as a judge of my performance. I didn't realize how great he was as a pianist until much later. He gave me good marks on my performance evaluation, and I got a gold NFSM pin shaped like a piano. A good grade was all that mattered to me then, today, I watch his white hair and strong hands and fingers on the keyboard in awe. He didn't have white hair when I played the piano for him, and I don't remember if he said much to me. Today I watch him in awe for the great man that he was and awe at his masterful performance, staid and under-dramatic, his music says it all and that is what is so beautiful and moves me to tears at the end of his performance! I can't believe he is age 88 here and to see the agility of his hands performing is just awesome!
Maestro Rubinstein was a genius! I like to think Chopin himself would be delighted with this performance. It's as autumnal as is only possible. There's finesse and an effortless lightness in his playing, and a Mozartean touch to it all. Superb recording
Beautiful music to study, work or just imagine that one is in the theater listening to this music. What I like the most is how the pianist at his age still maintains an incredible handling of the piano. An example to reach old age.
We are still greatly privileged to be able to listen to these great masters of the past. In this world where things have gone awry, it is music which lifts us to a higher level of being, brings us joy and makes us believe in the beauty of the creative side of humanity. Rosa Larsen
The many years from elementary through college of symphonic participation and ensuing 30 years as an avid audiophile has provided an exploration that has enriched my life. Keep the arts alive in the classroom and celebrate the flower of our shared Western civilization.
Wow, it's almost like I'm hearing this for the first time. I have no basis to say this, but I believe this is how Chopin would have played this piece. You can tell Rubenstein respected every single note
I absolutely love Rubinstein’s musical sensibility, there’s something that happens between him and the keys and the strings, an alchemy happens, much more than the tone he gets out of every piano he plays. I love to hear many concert pianists play Chopin, specifically, but also schubert, Brahms etc. But then I listen to Rubinstein again and I realize that he’s reached a whole different level than the other ones.
23:41 i seriously love how he just goes immediately into playing the next movement, it catches you by surprise almost because! it’s like all the love that was created in the second movement gets erratically and pettily forgotten by the third. rubinstein has such great interpretation of chopin
Arthur Rubenstein performs this Chopin Concerto with such grace and aplomb; it's entirely enjoyable to watch and listen to, even sublime. His interpretation is authoritative, even a benchmark to which all future performers may take note and aspire. I was really exhausted and the lilting melodies wafted me off to sleep briefly. All in all, a totally breathtaking performance by a 20th century icon of the piano.
Its something unbelieve how he plays passions and without transitions his music is peace Always I'm ready to heard Arthur Rubinstein playing piano My soul needs his music
This is one of greatest masterpieces composed in the musical world, in my opinion. The piano concerto is amazing in sensitivity and touches us deeply in our soul. The romanticism of the work is sublime and superb. The interpretation is admirable, the best I heard until now. The sentiment and the technique of Rubinstein are incredible. The harmony and cadence are amazing. I hear this concert many times but this is really the greatest and the best interpretation I know so far. Bravissimo!!!
Incredible. André Previn and Arthur Rubinstein and the London Symphony Orchestra on the same stage. Classic of classical. So elegant. Flawless performance where the music is the star. Delicious.
I love the performances of Arthur Rubinstein. He was a big hero of my lovely mother ( Piano Teacher). Thanks for sharing this unforgettable concert. Julianadorp / The Netherlands / Oktober 30 2022 / Hebert Perez Garcia
The best performance of all times of this eternal masterpiece. At 6:26 starts something impossible to describe, ineffable, mysterious, breathtaking, touching. The whole is a sinol of perfection and passion🎵
Just superb, the greatest piano virtuoso, no ego a consumate musician. Plus Previn & The orchestra. Music for lifs the soul...Chopin the composer who wrote understanding human frailty, mixed emotions & importantly the appreciation of love & art.
Brahms wrote about it, that his compositions seem to come to him from any world. He wasnt at all religious (his friends commented that he believed nothing) . it must have come only out his genius but he was too modest to attribute it. Modesty also prevented commencing his symphonies, intimidated by Beethovens achievements.
Artur came to Australia in the Sixties at the same time as The Beatles. My friend and I stood outside his hotel calling “Artur, Artur” despite the crowd of perhaps one hundred standing across the road calling for John, Paul or Ringo. Gracious Artur appeared on his balcony and waved to us! A great moment to cherish.
So you had the opportunity to see two great act at the same time! The Beatles and Arthur Rubinstein! That is something we don't have today, great, great artist fo that caliber!
There were two guys chose this concert this years at Chopin’s International piano contest.. Both played very good but I came back to Rubinstein’s concert. His is very deep and something catches my soul. I listen this music every night. I like this conductor, too.
This performance by Arthur Rubinstein is brilliant perfect and amazing in its beauty and depth of expression and technique. This genial interpretation of Chopin proves Rubinsten's outstanding talent as well as Chopin's Genius as a piano composer. This music is eternal.
Thank you so much for sharing this video with the brilliant Mr. Arthur Rubstein playing this beautiful piece of Chopin. 👏👏👏👏❤❤❤❤ Brasil - Rio de Janeiro
A great display of musical elegance and technique in the playing of this great piano concerto by Maestro Rubinstein, especially at the late age when he recorded this composition. I personally think he delivers strength, musical precision and the exact notes and markings as written and delivered by Frédéric Chopin, his compatriot. A classic, impersonal recording for the ages.
His external restraint and internal intensity of emotions make him unique! Emotions break out through the fingers into sound, this is an incredible phenomenon, which is almost non-existent now. It can be listened to and listened to and watched with pleasure!!
A wonderful performance by, for me, the greatest 20th century pianist, a marvelous orchestra conducted by a supreme musician (also a pianist)-what more could you ask for? Thank you Classical Vault.
In the 80s I was working in Poland, where Chopin is a national hero. Every 5 years they have the Warsaw International Chopin Piano Competition. It lasts a week or more and Poles were glued to the TV every night. We bribed and were lucky to get tickets for the final, and this was the test piece. As not a piano expert, it was nevertheless fascinating to discern it played in different ways by the 6 finalists. Fabulous experience and this now my favourite Chopin.
