I mean in what way? The internet is not something to measured in a concrete analysis. Plenty of good has come of it. Some of which is access to a library of knowledge that unforeseen at any point in human history. Ensuring a greater access and thus equality of it. This might be about twitter, but just as twitter is one part of the internet, to conflate it with the hole is a careful and I think a careless thing to do.

As bad as the internet can be I'd have to disagree. A dedicated and disciplined person can essentially educate themselves on any topic at low to no cost. We are also free to find our own information. Rather than relying on the 10 voices available in the local paper and news stations there's now thousands all over the world. If not for the internet most of us probably wouldn't know the name jordan Peterson to begin with.

Yup! Got sucked into in 2019, and I was becoming increasingly hostile, desensitized and also started feeling physically ill, while scrolling and reading. I let it go a month ago, and I feel better all around.

That's exactly why I quit Twitter. It makes me angry & some friends still shared Twitter comments because they knew I would answer. Now I ignore it all.

Yeah i just made twitter a few weeks ago but it seems to exist solely to offend users and some of the people i have encountered there are pretty nasty.

Though the core of the problem is not the social media. The media is simply bypassing our natural filters through these new lines of communication. What they pull out however has always been there. Not too long ago the predecessors of this Media had led to wars in a scale never seen before in human history. This same drive is now rampaging through the virtual world, where we exchanged the bullets for words. For that matter I would consider it to be an improvement over the literal slaughter of millions. Weather it will be able to dilute this violent energy enough for us to not regress into actual war again has yet to be demonstrated but I'm optimistic. We have a buffer space now in which we can study our violent tendencies and figure out new ways to deal with them. This is what social media does. Bottom up solutions, or at least data for problems that we couldn't solve top down yet.

Everyone is angry, depressed, anxious, and is way too invested with politics now and days. That’s probably why there’s so much fighting in the world. Human race is just going to take itself out eventually.

Social Media would be a whole lot better if you couldn’t see who likes who, who follows who, or who disliked who and most importantly, a warning label for what it brings. That’s what literally fuels the drama, the gossip and a bunch of other negativity on social media. I would be more than happy to return to social media if it had all these features.

If you looked at the tweets about Jordan when he was trending, it was overwhelmingly biased hate towards him. All calling him the usual names, and claiming him to be things he isn't. Of course not everyone is gonna like Jordan. Nobody is liked by everyone. Especially not someone who speaks about the topics he does. He's challenging the views of tons of people. But the fact that I spent maybe 5 minutes exploring the trending section, and I saw about 98% of people admonishing and insulting him, it really shows that Twitter has become a prime example of an echo chamber. It's an open site available for everyone to join, and yet you still see 98% of people share the same opinion on one person.

That's a great thought, and I think it's a bit of both. The internet offers a perfect place to comment some stupid "hot take" that the user only halfway means.

I remember first grappling with the benefits and hazards of online anonymity in the early 2000s on 4chan. It was... illuminating, to say the least. Those experiences especially taught me a lot about myself, what I'm capable of (for good and ill). I also found the de-individuation of an anonymous message board helped to keep my ego from getting carried away. Of course, Twitter is a far cry for the default anonymity if classic 4chan. The anonymity is there, but only when one abuses or games the system (e.g. sock puppet accounts, bots, etc.). The fact one is effectively forced to assume an online persona to use the site which can be and often is linked back to one's professional and private life seems to be deliberately designed as a means of control. It also makes brigading and harassment campaigns a thousand times more devastating than the often playful trolling campaigns of the 2000s. Worse, as the ego is inextricably linked to said online persona, simple arguments or pissing matches on Twitter frequently end with one or more parties feeling justified in inflicting unspeakable torment on others for something as petty as simple disagreement. The entire platform seems deliberately designed to trigger mass psychosis, on par with Mao's Cultural Revolution.

It certainly didn't lead to "cancel culture" as the behaviors associated with "cancel culture" have been present throughout all recorded human history. They form one of the fundamental elements of our ability to socialize, which boils down to simply sharing our opinions with other humans as well as taking actions based on our opinions.

The trolls thing may be a simple rule, but it seems to me difficult sometimes to discern between trolling and genuine ignorance. Unfortunately for me, my inclination is to believe someone is ignorant to certain facts of a topic rather than just trolling. The popularity of social media, must be in some part due to the platform giving people that are otherwise unable to express their views on certain (or any) topics a way to have a dialogue. It is stifling when you have things you want to say, but do not say them to friends or family for fear of hurt feelings. Having social media as an outlet is a release. We are also able to find others like minded and join respective echo chambers. If you have ever been a part of or watched a conversation where people interacting realize they have found a member of their chamber. The excitement level is raised and a palpable change can be noticed. Unfortunately, the limitations of a platform like twitter (restricted in the amount you can say at once) require packing your thoughts into small chunks. Given that restraint, it is far easier to just post a meme or use the equivalent of school playground insults than it is to formulate succinct thoughts. Of course the anonymity (which is not lost on me) plays a role in being utterly disgusting to another anonymous person.

I wouldn't know, I ditched twitter before it became even popular. First off I didn't like the onset of restricting the amount of words as if it's some kind of Nokia phone sms, 2nd I didn't like the 'I only pay attention to you if you have x amount of followers', that was just stupid and after tumbler fell and the toxic woke rainbow colored insane nutcases came along, well that kept me away for life... I wouldn't want to get down to their level coz they beat you with experience in insanity, stupidity, narcism, loss of IQ points more rapidly then an AK can fire bullets and vicious vindictive hate... which makes me wonder who the f* even wants to be on that forum, never mind that most these days aren't actual human beings, just bots.

Is it his moral fortitude that drove him to troll a trans person and a plus-size model?

Interesting that Peterson comes up to this conclusion, just a few days after getting banned :). Looks like the shrink's fragile ego has been bruised.

@@Mike-rm1lb If it was that fragile he'd just remove the tweet that got him banned...because that's all it will take to get him back on twitter...but he's not going to, and shouldn't, do that.

@@Mike-rm1lb *_Literally everyone_* is incentivized to have a Twitter account these days. Hell, many companies have started *demanding employees get one if they don't have one already.* Twitter has not only become a new public square, but not having a presence there is viewed as bad for business due to all the commerce and advertising that occurs there. We don't know Dr. Peterson's motives for initially getting an account, but he had plenty of mundane/legitimate reasons for having one. More importantly, the termination of that account was clearly politically motivated, overtly malicious, and done at the behest of craven, partisan bad actors *_like you._* May God have mercy on your soul.

I think Tik tok and Instagram are worse personally.
