The main idea of the talk is that heterosexuality is a socially created political system that is imposed on women from birth, and that women should examine that, analyze it, and understand how the system works. What women decide to do in their lives as a result of doing this political analysis is completely up to them. The point is that women should do this analysis. Radical feminism is a class analysis of the political system of patriarchy, and compulsory heterosexuality is one of the main enforcement mechanisms of patriarchy (along with femicide, rape, and excluding women from education and political and economic power).

Heterosexuality is the norm among all mammals and countless other species from snakes to insects to fish. Even in species where the female is bigger, stronger and more dominant, heterosexuality is the norm. To make the claim that humans 'created' heterosexuality, _for any purpose_ is laughable. Go watch some Planet Earth documentaries and come back to me saying heterosexuality is socially constructed.

you say this is more about women opting out of relationships with men and centering women in their lives and yet you use language like “changing sexual orientation”. that’s going to sound off-putting to a lot of ppl if you want more ppl to listen to your ideas tbh. why not just call yourself separatists and call it female separatism? when people hear lesbianism they think of romantic and sexual relationships with women because women like that do exist and experience same sex attraction from a young age. no amount of patriarchal brainwashing can suppress that desire in them. plus there are all kinds of lesbians including conservative anti-feminist ones, so i think terms like separatism will attract women more to the movement of decentering men in their lives. also it would be better to say compulsory heteronormativity rather than heterosexuality. logically it makes sense that most women are straight to continue the human species but that doesn’t mean they have to participate in marriage and child rearing. there are also probably a lot of bi women out there that never act on their same sex attraction

The basis of the ides is against a biological or “inherent” sexuality. The argument is that sexuality is socially constructed, and women’s sexuality is constructed to be heterosexual under patriarchy. I think ultimately radfems believe that sexuality is naturally open but that it is most beneficial for women to reject men and love each other. I think people sensationalize SJ’s position that “women can become lesbians” and take the least charitable view under their own assumption that sexuality is purely biological, and therefore no choice is involved. Lesbians and bisexuals choose to live as straight women all the time. Straight women believe their orientation to be completely natural without seeing the institution of heterosexuality. When I read Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence this all clicked into place. As a lesbian I was never offended by political lesbianism (which I think is a misnomer, it still involves loving other women, it’s not purely political). Basically the idea is that it’s not helpful or correct to make biological arguments for the validity of lesbianism. It is natural AND it’s inherently political because of the construction of women’s sexuality under patriarchy.

sorry for the long reply. I think radical feminism is supposed to be, well, radical, with statements that are perceived as extreme by the mainstream (like changing sexual orientation). These positions cause people to think if they are really open to the ideas. I think there is value in holding the ideological line and not capitulating to “malestream” culture. I don’t think feminists should change their language to make people more comfortable. that goes against the point of having a strong and radical political theory that analyzes/critiques our world

If you want to opt of normal human relationships and biology go ahead but please don't kid yourselves and others into thinking you are doing some deep academic work here. People have different levels of libidos and life situations so taking a very biased selection of (self selected) anecdotes and trying to build a theory around it is nothing more than self soothing rationalization

@@angelac.wild-wildwomynwork853 a really healthy attitude and starting point to theorize about heterosexual relationships is to view males as subhuman and not worth hearing from because of the fact they are male. As I said this not academic work, it's resentful self soothing that may as well be be titled 'why me and my friends don't like men'. It's very far from an accurate or useful model for the general case of heterosexual relationships, which, and I'm not sure you are aware of this, have quite a long history in the human race, and served a pretty important purpose that was not just oppressing women.
