Artist Alley Vlog 27: Galaxycon Richmond 2023 

Props to you for sticking through the internet issue. That's why I always prefer to have cash whenever I go to a con. It gives me a definitive budget to spend for the weekend too

Watching these kinds of videos in preparation for this year’s Galaxycon Richmond! Gonna be attending my first convention, pretty pumped for it!

I hope some day my small business is this successful at conventions. I don’t know how your card machine works, but the one we use, uses a mobile phone as the “till” and “pin pad” and we have a little card machine where you tap your card, but it is Bluetooth connect. Only the phone requires WiFi and we run it of mobile data which we purchase on the SIM card. We are UK so it might not be the same in the US, but this is how we work around WiFi and card machine problems. We tend to be the only one with operational card machines at cons!

And I'm sorry to hear about the square reader fail, I've seen other artist alley folks carry a portable wifi hotspot for just this reason!

Self serve is 100% a great idea but be careful to watch costumers who do that stuff to make sure they don’t steal as I’ve been at cons where I’ve heard people have gotten stuff stolen. Always encourage costumers to look thru things and touch stuff but just don’t look away from them or keep your eye on them still so they don’t steal, and be sure to tell them the price of an item or how to pay so they don’t assume items are free to take or try and run off with it. Maybe have a display item that’s marked or in a book they can look thru for the same effect in a way where the item they touch isn’t as enticing to run off with. (Cuz if something’s in a book it’s hard to steal a whole book and if something is marked with a sticker price or display less tempting to take it cus then you’d have to peel off a sticker + then people know it’s not meant to be taken without paying.) Tho I do still 100% agree with your point as I’m more likely to buy from people who let me look at items fully as it feels more inviting and I do love showing friends or family items at cons to ask if they might like one as a gift!

Edit: I'm about halfway through the video, at the point where you said you had to decline a lot of sales because of the bad wifi/internet connection. I'm not sure which card reader you're using. I personally bought the SumUp Solo, it doesn't need to connect to your phone or a wifi connection, it has it's "own" internet connection. Maybe that'd be an option for you for future cons ? 🐇

Would you still recommend the cardreaders that you have (you use sumup, right?)... since this isn't the first video where you mention that you had issues with the cardreaders... I've been binge watching your video's and got curious about your thoughts about the cardreaders over the years of you using them.

The main thing that stressed me out watching this was worrying about theft. Especially during the Saturday portion when the aisle was so packed, it would have been so easy for someone to walk by and swipe something and there aren't many of you that could leave the booth and chase them down. Was that something the convention had any security in place for?
