Daido Moriyama uses an ordinary compact camera and never stops shooting. The artist is the most celebrated photographer to emerge from the Japanese Provoke movement of the 1960s.
In this film Moriyama invites us into his studio and takes us on a walk around the atmospheric Shinjuku neighbourhood, his home from home in Tokyo.
Moriyama's work was featured in the exhibition William Klein + Daido Moriyama at Tate Modern, 10 October 2012 - 20 January 2013.

People interested in Moriyama should read his book called Memories Of A Dog. It's a collection of articles he wrote for a camera magazine, illustrated with his images. The articles talk about his philosophy of photography, of remembering times past and returning to places to reconstruct those memories. It's deeply immersive regarding his mindset and obsession with memory and experience.

The camera is a Nikon S9100 for those that dosen't know. He don't use a Ricoh anymore. And also you can see that he zooms sometimes. Ricoh gr haves only a 18.3 focal(28mm eqiv because the sensor size and crop factor) fixed focal-not zoom at all.

@edo This puts so many things into perspective. Often times, we're so focus on gear/lenses/etc, but Moriyama focuses more on capturing snapshots of on-the-moment experiences. Due to this mindset, I have to point out the following: I can't believe he produces such astounding images with a little Nikon S9100.
@azaeldrm
@azaeldrm 4 года назад
Do you know by any chance when did he switch to digital?
@paulmusescu4414
@paulmusescu4414 4 года назад
@@azaeldrm Cameras do not matter that much. Since the invention of the camera, there were good pictures, no matter if they were made on a Leica or a Kodak Brownie. Good cameras are only the ones that suit your needs without any useless gimmicks you'd pay for and confuse you. He shoots on the S9XXX series Nikon. For somewhat reasons he can be seen with different models like s9100 or s9300. Anyway, they don't differ that much. Probably they brake or he might have more and just grabs one and that is. I don't know when he started shooting digital exactly. There is a documentary with him that you can find on youtube named Near Equal that I suggest you watch. At the end of the documentary, it is showing his first encounter with a digital camera. I hope this will help you!
@Maxime-ho9iv
@Maxime-ho9iv 3 года назад
@@azaeldrm It doesn't mean you or we should do the same. It just happens to be how he does it, and what camera he is using. People should be careful about the interpretation around what other photographers are doing, or what camera they are using. You're not Moriyama, fortunately, since we already have one. This is very interesting in how to understand Moriyama work, but that stops here.

Make the camera your slave and not you slave of the camera. Thank you Moriyama-san!
@Mr.Monta77
@Mr.Monta77 4 года назад
The slave metaphor is misguided. Does the musician make his instrument his slave? Does the rider make the horse his slave? What we should aim for is resonance between the instrument of the eye, the strings of the camera and the object of the motive. A change or correction of the one, leads to a corresponding adjustment of the other.

Grazie comunque.
