Spicy Legacy Project is an intergenerational creative process that brings together elders and youth from specific cultures to engage in meaningful interactions. It is the brainchild of Tou SaiKo Lee, an artist educator, hip-hop advocate, storyteller, and spoken-word poet from St. Paul, Minnesota. Inspired by Lee’s decade-long collaboration with his poetry-chanting grandma Zuag Tsab, this community-based project honors the traditional arts of elders to bridge with nurturing the creativity of youth while teaching artists to navigate the creative process.
During a two-part residency, Lee facilitated workshops at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center with Hmong elders and youth in the Sheboygan community. Participants used spoken word poetry, storytelling, songwriting, theater, and music to build understanding between generations, culminating in a final collaborative performance featuring both the youth and elders.
