Join us for an artist talk featuring Michelle Sound, who will share her artistic journey and the path to becoming a full-time professional artist.
In this engaging discussion, Sound will share her personal experiences, trials, and triumphs, offering insights into how she navigated the balance of life and work as a single parent, arts worker, and artist. Hear more about her flourishing art career that now includes many art exhibitions, residencies and projects all across Canada. The artist will also share the artworks that embody her journey, for audiences to gain a deeper understanding of the inspiration behind her art and the themes that resonate deeply within her work.
Whether you are an aspiring artist, a fellow parent, or someone who wants to learn more about the artworks on view in the gallery’s current exhibition, this talk will offer inspiration and insight to keep on pursuing your creative work.

About the Presenter:
Michelle Sound is a Cree and Métis artist, educator, and mother. She is a member of Wapsewsipi Swan River First Nation in Northern Alberta. Her mother is Cree from Kinuso, Alberta, Treaty 8 territory and her father's family is Métis from the Buffalo Lake Métis settlement in central Alberta, Treaty 6 territory. She was born and raised on the unceded and ancestral home territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm, Skwxwú7mesh, and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh Nations. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Simon Fraser University, School for the Contemporary Arts, and a Master of Applied Arts from Emily Carr University Art + Design.
Public art pieces include a utility box art wrap (City of Vancouver), street banners (City of New Westminster), a printed transit shelter mural, and a painted mural at Ociciwan Art Centre (Edmonton). Recent solo exhibitions include Neutral Ground ARC, Daphne Art Centre, Alternator, Gallery 101, Burrard Arts Foundation, grunt gallery, and Seymour Art Gallery. Her work has been featured in group exhibitions including Burnaby Art Gallery, Audain Art Museum, and the Nanaimo Art Gallery. She has been awarded grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the BC Arts Council and completed artist residencies at the Burrard Arts Foundation and Indigenous Arts Intensive at UBC Okanagan. Her artwork is in the collections of the Burnaby Art Gallery, Indigenous Art Centre, Forge Project, and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection.
