After I dropped my Finding Value in Color with a Portrait of Bill Murray video last year, I received a few requests to further explain how I use value in color to create my colorful portraits. In this video, I explain how to find value in color in more depth. To go even further, I did a little experiment with a gray scale and value finder.
Purchase your own Gray Scale and Value Finder on Amazon HERE: amzn.to/3TBWDy1
First, I painted my ten Lukas Cryl paints on a canvas and tried to find the value of each of the colors using my gray scale and value finder. Next, I took a photo of the colors and put it in black and white (mono or monochromatic). Then, I tested my guesses and was kind of surprised with the results.
I promise that this tutorial will help you further understand how to use value in color. If you have any questions, please put those in the comments below.
This is a prequel to a video I am posting tomorrow further demonstrating my use value in color as I paint with a painting of Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Please don’t forget to subscribe and hit that notification bell so you don’t miss the video!
For another look at my colorful portraits, please visit my personal Instagram page @jennariceart. Some of them are for sale! For inquiries about purchasing, please email or DM me 😊

This guide is AMAZING! I’ve seen so many tutorials on this and no one actually explains how to see value in color. They skip right over it. Thank you for this!!!

I think you switched the key at the end.... the values written in grey were the ones you found when the photo was in greyscale and the red values were your initial guesses, weren't they? anyway, thank you for this video!! it's really starting to make sense to me now. i'm going to start practicing monochromatic paintings and then try this technique
@JennaRiceArt

Lily Canfield I may have switched them, you’re right! Hah. Anyway, I’m so glad I got as able to help you! It’s a fun process. I’d love to see whatever you come up with! I think it’d be fun to make a video of others trying the technique. DM me on IG @jennariceart

What is the use of knowing a color’s value? That’s a genuine question btw :)
@MD-tj4br

Did you watch the video on mute?
@caro4284
@caro4284 7 месяцев назад
No@@MD-tj4br but I see that instead of bringing a constructive explanation and answering a genuine question from a beginner, you clearly rather use your precious time to a cynical comment. Well that’s a choice. “Mastering values in black and white is very important to mastering values in colors”, I understand that, but why in the first place do we need to know the values of the different colors? How does it help the artist?
@MD-tj4br
@MD-tj4br 7 месяцев назад
@@caro4284 if you want to read that deeply into my comment …ok. But what you are asking is specifically addressed in the video.

I am doing an old roof, and the 3 main values are 70%-60%-20%. How do you apply this info to your picture ?

So, do you have a recomendation find value by only eyes... I wanna sketch with finelinner pen.. quickly sketch... so..I really wanna find value of 2 color in my view to decide how many cross harching for that color area... (Sorry if my English bad, English is not my native langugue!)
@JennaRiceArt
@JennaRiceArt 3 года назад
No problem at all! I completely understand. Cross hatching can be pretty difficult at first. The more you practice using values, the easier they are for your eyes to see. Perhaps I’ll make a video about that sometime. North hank you for watching!

I feel like an idiot but how does finder help you determine value, when paint is opaque?

Hi there! I just used a print out of a gray scale and value finder I found on Google 😊 Sometimes I use my iPad. On there, I use Procreate to see my colors in gray scale more easily.

You are better off color sampling your color with the color picker then look at the L in LAB results to get your value. It's a simple enough conversion from a 1-100 (L value) to 1-10 (paint) value scale. It would be necessary to adjust the brightness so that you have something really pure white in the shot (best would be TI-white since you're painting and that's your brightest value.) So that spot of TI-white in the pic will read like 95-100 in the L value after your adjustment. You really screwed your experiment up by taking your value scale photo in a different shot, then boosted the yellow to 10, why!? I guarantee you that yellow is not a 10.

Thanks for your input! You have good points. For me, it’s not always about being technical - I just go with how I see things. It’s more about the end result of the painting

Hi, thanks for watching! I used mainly paint directly from the tubes, yet I honk I may have added a little white to some in some places to lighten the value
