That's great to hear! It breathes new life into old 10-15-year-old family PCs and family laptops. Really the only thing scaring me away is my negative experience with i3 and tiling window managers in general. Nothing worked, finding even Firefox to open it was a task of its own and it violated my personal beliefs about graphical user interfaces (a GUI has to be easily understandable with a single point and click; a GUI has to behave like a collection of objects and not like an extended terminal with disjointed functions sprinkled in). So yeah, although a tiling window manager uses a whole lot less memory than even XFCE or LXQt, I simply won't install a tiling window manager on an old PC and I'd stay with a compositing one, like Enlightenment. Looks pretty, doesn't consume a whole lot of resources and it's also a compositing WM (with a tiling option for those who like it).

I used void linux with dwm. It was great until it broke for unknown reasons. I couldn't find answers due to low community support. I never wanted sysd but runit. So I saw Artix. I can say it's better arch. Most arch community is enough to get help for Artix unless it's related to systemd. Due to huge arch community. Now this my go-to linux. They are different init systems for Linux. They manage services in different ways. Runit and s6 are lighter and more modular than systemd. They represent different philosophies. I think each has its own pros and cons and as always it’s best to test them out and see which one works for you best.

Unfortunately it doesn't work. When I get to the part of fstabgen -U /mnt >> /mnt/etc/fstab it either says permission denied (even when using sudo or su) or it claims the file or directory does not exist (even though I can see it does exist with ls and cat and I can open the fstab file in Vim and Nano editors so it does indeed exist). I can generate the fstabgen -U output but it refuses to allow me permission to apend that output to the fstab file for some reason. The instructions were very helpful up until this point though.
@folksurvival
@folksurvival 2 года назад
I tried writing the fstabgen output to a text file then opening that text file with Nano, copying the contents then manually opening the fstab file in Nano and pasting the text into that file but it loses the "clipboard" data after leaving and reopening Nano so I can't paste it in manually to the fstab file. Only thing I can think of to try now is taking a photo of the fstabgen output and manually typing it all into the fstab file haha.
@folksurvival
@folksurvival 2 года назад
I tried this: I made two text files in the home directory then i tried to cat the output of one and append it to the other like this: cat file1 >> file2 It worked and it added the text from file1 to the end of the text of file2. So then I tried the same thing but with the text file containing the fstabgen output, like this: sudo cat tempfstabgenfile >> /mnt/etc/fstab But it still tells me permission denied!? -bash: /mnt/etc/fstab: Permission denied Anyone reading this know what the problem is? Why does it deny me access to write to, or append to, the fstab file even when I use sudo (or even when running as root with su)?
@folksurvival
@folksurvival 2 года назад
Ok I did take a photo of the output of fstabgen and manually typed it into the fstab file. It allowed me sudo permission to open, write and save the fstab file with the data so I did that and moved on to the next step shown in the video which is to input the command: artools-chroot /mnt All I get is this: -bash: artools-chroot: command not found So unfortunately I will have to give up trying to install an Artix base system as the necessary commands to do so just aren't recognized. I have been able to install the preconfigured Artix ISOs with DEs just fine so I'll have to install one of those and then remove all the extra stuff so it is stripped back down to a base install.
@folksurvival
@folksurvival 2 года назад
The artools-chroot command/program doesn't exist so I tried the standard chroot which did work. However when moving on to the dd stage i could not open the /dev/zero file as shown in the instructions of this video because the zero file did not exist. I went into the dev directory and made the zero file myself then ran the dd command again and it appears to have worked. Moved on to the chmod 600 /swapfile command which worked. Next command was mkswap /swapfile which failed because it says "mkswap: error: swap area needs to be at least 40 KiB". So even though it has already been given a 2GB area it fails and says it needs at least 40 KiB. So that's it, I'm done, I don't know any way to try to proceed from here. Maybe these comments will help someone else who has the same problems.

However, I regret a bit that you did not quickly indicate to non specialists that they can very easily install the same distribution via Calamares the graphical installer. What I don't understand are the distros that install laboriously through the terminal and then use systemd which automates a lot of things in its own way. Which is obviously not the case with Artix. --- Oui, je trouve intéressant de voir une installation "manuelle" d'Artix si bien expliquée. At 9:25 when i run the command, i get errors saying 'failed retrieving file 'system.db'' on multiple mirrors and it also says 'operation too slow. Less than 1 bytes/sec transferred the last 10 seconds' As far as I can tell I am able to connect to the internet just fine otherwise Can someone help me out?

Hello! That happened to me once. It might be server related, or you could try installing reflector and create a new arch-mirrorlist file in the /etc/pacman.d directory.

Sorry, but I cant enable sshd service ln -s /etc/runit/sv/sshd /run/runit/service/sshd File exist error.

That means the service should be already working. The video is s little old, it's possible some things have changed.

Is Artix good for beginners?
@eflinux

I'd say no. If you are new to Linux you should check out Linux Lite or Linux Mint.

@@eflinux I am not new in linux, I've been using Debian or Ubuntu for 8 years. I can use the terminal. Can I use Artix? I could install Arch on a virtual machine using command line. The install process is similar. I haven't installed Arch on my computer, because there is no efi.
@eflinux

You can definitely. You can also install Arch on non UEFI systems btw.

I'd say so. A swap partition or a swapfile.

Awesome tutorial, thank you. I have a problem with connman, it says "Error getting technologies: The name net.connman was not provided by any .service files", what should I do? :( I tried different ways to connect to the internet but nothing seems to work

Thanks for the feedback! That’s a odd. Sounds like the service is down. Did you bring your WiFi adapter up as shown in the tutorial?

There might have been some changes in the latest ISO. Try to see if the service can be started with “sv up connman”
