"Piece of Mind"and "Number of the Beast" are 2 of my all time favorite metal albums...they wrote some good stuff after , but never really as good...IMO
@@jeffreycherep8264 once again, none of them believed in Satan. Its almost like you don't even know why they burned churches. Also, if you do somehow find some band who worship Satan (not in the laveyan way) the exception to the rule is exactly that.
the song was inspired by a nightmare Steve Harris had after watching the film Damien: Omen II. In addition to the album's artwork and title, the song was a prominent target of religious groups in the United States who accused Iron Maiden of being a Satanic group. The controversy led to organised burnings of the group's albums as well as several protests during their 1982 tour, although this would only serve to give the band more publicity. Harris has since commented that the accusations made against them were "mad. They completely got the wrong end of the stick. They obviously hadn't read the lyrics. They just wanted to believe all that rubbish about us being Satanists.
"When the Jews return to Zion, and a comet fills the sky, and the holy Roman Empire rises, then you and I must die. From the eternal sea he rises, creating armies on either shore, turning man against his brother, until man exists no more."
Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris said he wrote the song about a nightmare. Critics tried to pan the band as 'satanic' 😈 'The number of the beast' was a pivotal record for Iron Maiden in 1982... they were starting to become popular on 2 albums, but then had to part ways w/ their singer Paul Di'Anno in 1981. They opted to hire vocalist Bruce Dickinson and needed to make their 3rd album that established the band AND a new singer... Thankfully, they delivered as 'Number of the beast' went to #1 on the UK charts and platinum sales in the US🤘🤘
They also replaced the drummer Clive Burr. Clive was a killer drummer. If you watch the older live version of Hallowed Be Thy Name, that is Clive on drums, not Niko.
...Run To The Hills was my intro to Iron Maiden. I never thought Paul Dianno was nearly as good as Bruce Dickinson. But I do still occasionally listen to "Killers"..different flavor, but still a good album
" Oh well, wherever, wherever you are, IRON MAIDEN' s gonna get you no matter how far ". It' s absolutely true ! :) Up The Irons !!!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I saw these guys in 1993 was supposed to see them at the end of last year but the whole world caught a cold and they didn't come to Aotearoa New Zealand and don't worry about demon's and Angeles they are the same as fairy's goblins and wizards just characters from a book of fairytales they can't jump out and get YAs
You can't take everything you hear in music too literal, otherwise Eminem would be behind bars for murdering his gf a hundred times over. It's just imagery and theater. It's fun. I listened to this song when I was 8 years old and devil worshipping is the laaaaaast thing on my list of interests. Gotta keep your mind open and with that open mind, your children are able to listen to all this cool music without being stupid enough to be influenced by it. I notice Brad can get uncomfortable from time to time from lyrics or images in videos that go against his belief system. Just look to your left and see how Lex is totally vibing and take something from that. It'll go a long way to you letting more experiences and art in.
dont patronize him ....or us ....he is entitled to his opinion - just like you .....just like a politician cant simply say he is a Christian...the opposite is also true ...you dont have to be a card carrying Satanist to be influenced by dark forces .....but as you PROBABLY dont even think there are any forces whatsoever , you easily dismiss this .
@@TheMichaelseymour ok, I don't know wtf you're on about 🤣 but to call me patronizing is indicating I am trying to be nice in a back handed kinda way, my comment is direct and calling it as it is, there's nothing patronizing about it. Good chat!
Love you guys energy. Lex is so demonstrative. I grew up listening to Iron Maider as a teen. It's nice to someone discover these songs. Keep it up. Up the Irons!
This is from my high school days. Saw Maiden on this "Number" tour opening for Scorpions in '82. The following year Maiden were headlining on their Piece of Mind tour.
You nailed it Lex, it's just art and expression that was meant to defy the norms as Brad put it. Its a iconic song but it is just a song that happens to be a great one.
I remember my Mom bringing this record home to me and my brother back in 82. She went to K-mart and came home with it. Surprised the hell out of us. I was 12 and my brother was 14 . Man, my Mom was cool back then......
Well sort of. It's a rewrite of the Revelations 13:18 verse. Then if you consider the entire bible has been rewritten dozens of times since it's stories were first written and combined into one book, who knows what the original text would be. The protestant King James version, from the 1600's, 1600 years after the agreed upon date of death of Jesus Christ, and more common to England, would be "Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six."
@@BrindleChase Re-interpreted may be a better way of putting it. Some Bibles are “literal” word for word translations. Others are “figurative” translations. The language of certain phrases changes over time as our language changes or as new discoveries are found in the scrolls to determine the original meanings of ancient words, but there’s no illuminati conspiracy theory going on here with the supposed rewriting of the Bible… it’s all nonsense.
@@BrindleChase gud description. 600.a score is 20 which 3 score is 60 & 6=666. I think the number had actually changed around a couple of times. I think it wz actually 616. lol!
My older brothers were metal heads. (I'm also an ol'school metal head). They were listening to this when it came out. I was 6 yrs Old, almost 7. I've been singing this song for 40 yrs!!! Great reaction!
Ive watched a bunch of your reaction videos now and I see it plain as day, Lex is a full on "Metal Head" Its so beautiful to see someone being born into the light of Metal. Its a huge family and once you are in, youre in for life. There is no going back. When you really understand what "Metal" is and what it isnt... You begin to see the world differently and awaken to something deeper and more meaningful. A different level of intelligence and understanding. A group of people that are not enslaved by consumerism and conformity. Here you can be exactly who you are with no judgement. Your "Metal family" accepts and loves you and rejoices in your individuality. Free thinking, questioning all you believe and everything you stood for... We all watch like proud parents. Metal is a family that you can count on across the globe. You have millions of brothers and sisters and help or is never far away if you need it. Even though every "Metal Head" stands completely alone, we never truly are because each one of us belongs to and upholds the values of the biggest baddest family on the planet Earth. Pantera - "Walk" Metalllica - "Fade to Black" Lamb of God - "Momento Mori" Butcher Babies - "Mr Slow death" Black Label Society - "Funeral Bell" Texas Hippie Coalition - "Turn it up" Just a couple off the top. \m/
This is such an amazing song. I absolutely love how Lex gets into it, not just this one but on others. She's a true rocker at heart! You guys are awesome!
Glad you like Lex, I loved this album..the whole album, back when I was a teen. ...This song does not promote Devil worship, it is only the topic of this song, it is a great song. Iron Maiden always did their own thing...and they are still doing it, and they are still awesome
I've seen Iron Maiden 5 times in concert...they are my boyfriends favorite band!!he's seen them more than I have live. This band ALWAYS ROCKS OUT!!! Bruce Dickinson has one of the best voices in metal!!!amazing to see them perform in concert!!!thanks for your reactions!! Lex rocks!!🤘
I've noticed many of the songs reacted to have incorrect lyrics posted - sometime confusing and other times misleading. It's only a word here and there, but still you'd think the person posting these would be a little more accurate. I know Brad pays attention to the lyrics but has been kind enough not to go off on the inconsistencies.
Yes, I know what you mean. Sometimes they can really steal a ton of meaning from the narrative. Other times they're just funny. E.g.: A KISS lyric I saw: "I want to rock and roll all night, and *part of every day*." Yeah. When I think of KISS, restraint is what comes to mind. Gotta study for exams after all. :-D
Yeah absolutely, I think one of the worst is Rolling Stones 'Paint it Black'. I don't know if it's meant to be the official video, but there's so many inaccuracies it's unbelievable. Two of the worst are 'i wanna see the sun, blotted out from the sky' not 'flyin high in the sky', big difference! and the outro is 'Paint It, Paint It, Paint It, Paint It Black' not 'Painted, Painted, Painted, Painted Black', the clues even there in the title for them. Duh!
@@snowblindoz I left a comment on their Paint It Black video pointing that out. The worst part is , whatever idiot made the lyrics video could have easily looked the lyrics up on a reputable site. Or checked several. So they were either too arrogant to do so , or did so and had the audacity to assume what they heard was correct , not the lyric transcription.
I always loved the story that Bruce Dickinson tells about how that scream he did in the intro of “Number of the Beast” was legitimately a complete accident. He’d been doing takes over and over again and just couldn’t get a scream he was happy with. He got _really pissed_ and just screeched in frustration, and the tape just happened to be rolling. To this day, he has _never_ been able to make a scream like that again.
The song was inspired the novel and movie The Omen. You will find that a lot of metal song lyrics are based off of horror stories topics. Funny how people would get seriously bent about song lyrics , but would actulally read or watch the same thing and not bat a eye.
Finally saw Iron Maiden in Vancouver BC in 2016. They are still amazing. I'm not a metalhead but I do love the classic melodic stuff like Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath.
Wow!! That's awesome. I miss Vancouver and all the shows I saw there. Moved to Windsor Ontario for cheap real estate. Figured we could easily see Detroit concerts but then covid happened. Still haven't been to any Detroit shows. They have to open that border eventually.
@@hellopaulie I moved to Vernon for cheap real-estate. Lol I totally understand the move out of Vancouver. Lol Borders will open soon, Iron Maiden shows WILL GO ON...🤘😁🤘
Vincent Price was an old movie legend. His first introduction to a rock song was Alice Coopers Black Widow. An icon used as introduction to iconic songs.
When I lived in the Detroit area, 'mischief nite' was called Devil's Night. And if Halloween was on a weekend, that was really 3 days. One time they had over 900 buildings set on fire over 3 days of "Devil's Night".
Man.....! Steve Harris's bass line is insane in this song (just like Run To The Hills). I don't even play an instrument, but I always focus on his efforts. Great reaction, guys!
Good job Lex, it is art and you guys are reliving the discussion we had in the 80’s when this and other songs, like this came out. The intro was from the Bible, Revelations. Yes Brad, my mom had a hard time with tunes like this when I was a kid. Back then, this was heavy stuff.
Lex is spot on. You've got to treat it as it is. Art. Entertainment. Similar to a classic horror story. And not got obsessed with the literal meaning of the lyrics and thinking this is what they are about!
Lex should've been around in the 80s... I remember going to old closed warehouses and hearing bands like this just jamming... no cops around, just kids playing wherever they could.. all kinds of music was just exploding.. rock, pop, new wave, r&b, rap... It was all just exploding... Great time... Great reaction. Thank you. 😊
I used to blast this on my ghetto blaster as a young teen while having illegal bonfires and getting drunk with friends. We'd all scream the lyrics into the night. lol Teenagers. :D
I am just so impressed with Lex. EVERY time she comments on a song that I love and know reallly well, she gets it spot on. Brad is going on about hallowe’en and whether it’s bad for kids, and Lex says, it’s just art. Spot on Lex.
Would you let your kids listen to it??? My mom bought me this album for my 9th birthday nearly forty years ago, still love it today, not only should you not hide this from kids, but you should gift it to them, when you are young it has mysticism, when you are older you understand the skill
I remember listening to this song, dance of death, Metallica call of ktulu, etc, late at night on my porch when I was like 10 or 11. Those songs would make these crazy movies in my mind and sometimes I'd get scared and go inside lol. The mysticism of this music is REAL when you're young
@@ext93 Metalica Ktulu ? Burtons bass rips wow! love that shit, it really has the same the feel though. that's what we we want, something powerful with mysticism.
This was my first live concert. 1983, Providence Rhode Island. I was 13yo and it was "The Beast on the Road Tour." Best live band ever, their have performances, not shows. Made me a head banger for life.
Yous two really need to start doing the LIVE performances from Maiden !! These studio tracks are no match for the LIVE tours of the 2000's Here's hoping you up the ante.....
Love the reaction. You really need to watch the original "official" videos of their songs. It will let you see what kind of characters these guys really are and how much fun they have doing what they're doing.
I saw this song live (not to long ago about 2009) I fucking shit my pants when I heard that intro narration come over the PA and it was PITCH BLACK with smoke rising from the stage with a low red light, the entire stadium ERUPTED. I'll never forget it. This song and "Fear of the Dark" are burned into my brain form their live perfomances. 20,000 people chanting Fear in the Dark is a feeling I may never have again. I am grateful to have been a part of it.
Y’all need to go to a live metal show. The huge positive energy is unbelievable!! 20,000 plus people all there to see their favourite band....if the energy could be harnessed, it would light up a city!!! Cheers and Up The Irons!!🤘
Yeah, this was super controversial when it first came out when I was a teenager in the early 80's. The thing about Maiden, a large number of their songs are based on, or inspired by, books they've read, films and TV shows they like, historical events, etc. If I remember correctly, Steve (the bass player) wrote this one after reading "The Omen", a horror novel about a satanic cult.
Yeah....I started listening to iron Maiden alone at 10yo and scared the crap out of other kids...I did it as a revenge against my strict Opera fans parents
The lyrics are specific. It's about a dream that felt so real. In fact the founder and leader of the band Steve Harris had a nightmare that felt so real and turned it in a song. People that are born under the sign of Pisces like he is are known for being intuitive and introvert (if you believe in signs). Nevertheless back then Cold War was still existed and people feared of a Global nuclear disaster. Listen to 2 Minutes To Midnight by l.M. also which is related to that fear. Other metal bands express fear in their songs about a nuclear disaster like Metallica with Fight Fire With Fire and Blackened.
You know what I love about you guys and some others out there sure actually listening to the music you're not just doing actions for the reaction you're listening that's awesome
Fun fact.. lead singer Bruce Dickinson is the captain of the band’s huge Boeing 747 named “Ed Force One”. No joke.. He flew the band/crew/cargo around the world multiple times for over a decade. He’s also the chairman of a aircraft maintenance, management and training company. So no, he’s not unhinged lol
That's not Vincent Price - they did try to get him to do the intro but couldn't afford him. The spoken intro to "The Number Of the Beast" is performed by British radio announcer and voice actor Barry Clayton.
Really great reaction and thanks for sharing. There are so many amazing songs in the Iron Maiden vaults. You have hit some of the amazing highlights so far. Keep them coming. Check out Wasted Years, Dance of Death, Stranger in a Strange Land, Revelations, Still Life, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Fear of the Dark (live at Rock in Rio) this one is amazing to see a crowd of 250,000 sing along to a song not in their language. :) Chris
I heard this since 10 years old and i knew it was just playing but it gave me energy because of the song rythm. I can tell you it was one of the song i loved the most to hear when i was a kid.
I remember the local morning radio show play a clip of this on 5 Jun 2006 as a teaser for the next day's show. 6.6.6. The number of the beast. Hell and fire, were born to be released. As they knew this only happens once every 1000 years, and they weren't going to miss their chance. 🙂
When all this was first coming out all our parents seen was the album covers. They never listened to the music. That's why i was glad to hear you say. Most of it has a deeper meaning be it historical political, or cultural. Back then people didn't listen they just criticized it as noise and screaming. The coolest thing is that a new generation can and does appreciate it. Thanks for opening your minds.
Epic. Iconic. Awesome!!!!!! I’ve seen them 3x in concert, always Kill It!!! I was 14 when this came out and it was too much fun to say/sing 666 especially coming from a super religious house!!! UP THE IRONS!!! 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘💜💜💜
If you read the poem Tam O'Shanter, you'll find where a major part of the inspiration for this song was derived. This song...as well as the majority of metal....is art -- very sophisticated and learned...art. Thank you for doing what you do. I appreciate your open-mindedness. ❣️🤘❣️🤘❣️🤘❣️
Just found this channel love how Lex gets really into it .Iron Maiden are the greatest heavy metal band in the world 🌍 and they are from my country England 🏴 Also going to see the live in Manchester next year .The intro is brilliant as teenager I played this loud at home 40 years ago 😎
