Arturia announces the Synclavier V, the first recreation of the legendary digital synthesizer made in collaboration with Cameron Jones, the inventor of the original instrument.
The Synclavier V faithfully recreates the elite digital synthesizer/workstation that started it all, powering some of the biggest hits and film soundtracks of the early ‘80s with its unique rich, edgy sounds.

As a young musician in the hey day of the Synclavier I looked on in awe of that machine (and the Fairlight CMI), knowing that I'd most likely never get to play one, let alone own it. They were stupendously expensive but also extraordinarily powerful. I was a Zappa fan, so what he did with the machines blew me away. I'm actually really happy that this has come to market and has NED's involvement via Cameron Jones. It's not often that you have access to the original engineers to bring a system like this back to life. It sounds pretty fantastic too. I could actually spend $10-15k and get a refurbed 9600 system, but with the capabilities of DAW's these days there is probably no point. I'd still love to have one though and spend several months locked away in my home studio exploring it.

I am very happy about this announcement. I am also amused that the various participants in this project do not agree on whether it is a SIN-kluh-veer or a sin-CLAY-vee-yer.

+Kelli Halliburton I'm gonna go with the guy who built it in the first place. :-D

+Kelli Halliburton Synclavier is a play on words, taking "clavier" which just means "something with keys", and adding "syn" to it. Clavier is pronounced kla-VEER. So it should be Synkla-VEER. You can hear Clavier pronounced here: www.thefreedictionary.com/clavier

Thanks, Tim. I was already aware of the etymology; I just happened to find the use of different pronunciations in the same video amusing. :)

Me too! As a kid, I used to think it was "Sin-CLAH-vee-ur" - I'd see it on so many album credits wondering what the heck this thing did! Took getting into the studio world about 20 years ago to finally see what it was.

I can NOT believe you managed to score this emulation! I've been lusting after one of these since I was a lad too. Since you guys are taking requests, ahem, you simply MUST emu the Memorymoog and ARP Chroma. And if you really love us, produce an Origin II.

This will be a must have synth for me! I'm a huge fan of the excellently crafted Arturia V synths. They look and sound great! Well done Arturia! :-)

Maybe they should pronounce Synclavier it the way Cameron Jones pronounces it since he created it.

Did you actually get rid of the iconic giant silver data knob? ?? That's the iconic part of the synclavier

Probably got removed as a matter of function over form; maybe its usefulness combined with size got it removed. You could say the clicking samples on the keyboard for the CMI is even more useless, but the difference there is that the computer/synth part doesn't take up the whole plugin screen when it's open; it's an outlier compared to their other synths because the interface is segmented but most of the sound design parameters are on the screen, which has its own view.

I think I found the missing verse to Alanis Morissette's Ironic. Something about a Synclavier virtual instrument finally being released but without any samples. Man....

I actually stumbled upon this video to help learn the proper way to say Synclavier. And rather humorously, know little more now than I did before watching it. However, I'll probably lean on the way Cameron Jones says it since he created it.

Does this thing sample? The early samplers had a lo-fi digital quality beyond just low sample rate and bit depth, which I don't fully understand, be cool to make 'people are people' style sounds.
@musicman8942
@musicman8942 8 лет назад
Unfortunately Arturia left out the sampling/resynthesis feature here - bad form. It can hardly be called a 'faithful reproduction' to use their words. Although Arturia has said they may include it in a V2 if enough people ask for it. Come on fellow synthesists - pepper Arturia with requests for the sampling/resynthesis feature and soon.

Well it'd be criminal not to! (Not smooth criminal though.) Anyway I wanted to refer you to 4:40 "We've also included some of the best presets of the original Synclavier so you can find these classic sounds that were used on so many hits of the 1980s." I think that's a clue.

I'm kind of disappointed that they didn't stick to the original design and make an accurate emulation. This seems to me like a synclavier inspired synth not a synclavier emulation.
@sebastienrochard2700
@sebastienrochard2700 8 лет назад
+emilshere This uses the code of the original Synclavier, as the engine of Synclavier V was provided to us by Cameron Jones who was the creator of the Synclavier. I would not even call it an emulation. This is the Synclavier in VST format. The interface design was adapted to the computer world. Button + a wheel works well when you have two hands to manipulate. It's not that great with a single mouse.
@emilshere
@emilshere 8 лет назад
Thanks for the reply! I was speaking purely from an aesthetic viewpoint. Now that I think about it, are you saying that holding down a keyboard character plus the mouse wheel is easier than turning a big silver knob with a mouse? I was a bit unclear about your answer. I didnt know the earliest models didnt have sampling. I assume they didnt have hard disc recording either? What was the FM engine like , (operators, capabilities compared to DX series, etc) Thanks again!
