Spiegel im Spiegel, composed in 1978, was the last work Arvo Pärt completed before leaving his native Estonia. Following the inaugural "tintinnabular" works by only two years, the work stands as one of the most carefully distilled examples of Pärt's new compositional aesthetic, and its extreme tranquility contrasts sharply with the tension and frustration that characterized his music from a decade before.
To fully appreciate the beauty of Spiegel im Spiegel, we must go back a few years. The late 1960s found Pärt in an artistic quandary. Having tired of the brash, neoclassic style of his first published works (see, for example, the Partita), and growing equally frustrated with the predominant serialist style of the day, he composed several works that seemed to reflect no style of his own, but rather comment on the inadequacy of and incompatibility between the choices at hand. Pro et Contra and the Second Symphony, both from 1968, were characterized by rude, jarring juxtapositions of style, and reflected the urgency of Pärt's crisis. Shortly after their composition, Pärt withdrew from public composition altogether, and over the next few years composed only two works. This period was one of intense reflection and study (particularly of Medieval and Renaissance music), and by the time Pärt re-emerged in the late 1970s, he had developed an entirely new approach to composition, which became known as the "tintinnabular" style.
The principles of tintinnabuli are demonstrated clearly and elegantly in Spiegel im Spiegel. The basic technique calls for a combination of two types of voices: a melodic voice, that moves in simple stepwise fashion across diatonic scales; and a tintinnabula voice, which confines itself to pitches within the tonic triad. The chord tones follow certain variable patterns; in the case of Spiegel im Spiegel, the tintinnabular voice is the second note in each three-note accompanimental figure, which always falls on the nearest chord tone below the melodic voice (transposed down an octave). Thus, in the underlying and omnipresent F major tonality, a melodic voice on an A or G is paired with a tintinnabular voice on F; if the melody moves down to F, the tintinnabular voice drops down to the C, and so forth.
The striking lyricism of the piece certainly does not suggest the rigid guidelines with which it is constructed. Scored for violin and piano (with the option of transposing the violin part down an octave to be played by a cello), the work is made of slow, steady lines ascending and descending in the violin part, over a serene and uninterrupted arpeggio accompaniment in the piano. This texture is occasionally colored by low, sustained Fs in the bass and high, bell-like (or, to use the word in its original context, tintinnabular) consonances in the upper piano register. The gentle lines in the violin are actually built according to a strict formula: beginning with the two-note scale G-A, the violin alternately ascends then descends to A by step. With each subsequent ascent and descent, a note is added to the line. There is no sense of drama, tension, or ambiguity here--when we hear the violin leap to high G, we know the stepwise path it is going to take on its way back down to A. The beauty of the tintinnabulum is not the construction of emotional trajectory, but rather the creation of an introspective atmosphere made of pure sonority.

Part's style gives me confidence as a composer to keep things simple! Less is more and a soothing counterpoint to the rush and grind we encounter in the modern world...Part reminds us to slow down and 'feel' life as it flows through us.

I recognized this by the second note. It's featured prominently in a wonderful Portuguese-language film called "Hoje eu quero voltar sozhino." Or perhaps the short film it was adapted from, "Eu não quero voltar sozinho." The title of this piece, which was heretofore unknown to me, fits with the film in a stunning way. I think even the recording here is the same used in the film (though not the entite thing is sampled). It's a brilliantly contemplative piece on its own, and it really adds so much to the story of the film too, if you're musically sensitive and half the nerd I am. I just discovered Pärt 20 minutes ago with "Fratres," and this was just the second video of his I happened to click. I'm so glad I did. I was in tears in seconds. Thank you for sharing this!!!

I would have taken this just a bit slower to really get that other-worldly astral-voyage effect. BUT, that being said, i'd say this is really one of the better renditions of the piece. Nice and even, and this allows the piece to almost flow on it's own.

Comparing Beethoven's richness with Pärt's poverty tells a sad story of cultural decline, perhaps? (I say "perhaps," because I think this part of the truth but perhaps not the whole truth.)
@wintypes
@wintypes 7 лет назад
I meant something different. There are some obvious parallels between this piece and the Moonshine sonata, such as the slow tempo, soft mood, and the 3 way voice leading of melody, triplet harpeggio and bass line. Also I'd be careful to mix up the style of Minimalism with incompetence or decline. I see it more as a back-to-the-roots approach in a time where the likes of Stockhausen and Cage are doing their best to dismantle music as a whole - going for maximum sonirity and consonance and completely pass on dramaturgy. Imho Pärt is doing a hommage to the Beethoven sonata, in a very counter-revolutionary way within the context of his contemporary musical development.

@dankim3716
@dankim3716 7 лет назад
I disagree with your comparison of beethoven and part - you're over complicating the piece's minimalist language and and going on a tangent that is irrelevant to the piece. By your comparison you could compare this piece with many others. Also, it's called the moonlight sonata. Part's piece is just a scale played on X instrument with an accompanied arpeggiated triads and the occasional third of the triad being raised 2 whole notes. That third being raised creates tension or a release - this uncertainty is ultimately the most significant part of the piece. Sounds like a lonely adventure into the woods. I don't know, it's just otherworldly. No where near moonlight sonata. Not even close to how it registers in feeling.
@The1stMrJohn
@The1stMrJohn 5 лет назад
On guitar, I just improvise along using simple triads on the top three strings, with all inversions. Think of it as a starting point, it's easy to play the arpeggios this way. I have an E-Bow (electronic bow) and play the melody using it, sometimes with 'false harmonics'. And,... E-bows can be rather tricky to control, occasionally you can make an horrid squeak accidentally! There are a lot of bands where the guitarist occasionally uses one, once you know the sounds that you can produce you recognise them. I got one because of The Cocteau Twins obvious use of one, and The Psychedelic Furs and other bands. A few months ago I noticed that the guitarists in The Contortionist use them in their more recent quieter tracks. You can see it in at least two if their videos.

@Eorzat
@Eorzat 4 года назад
Not particularly as far as I know, but then again it was composed in 1978, so it's a bit hard to tell how important and influential it was since there's not enough analysis of music history past the 60s to really separate the "very important" stuff and the "not so important" stuff. That being, I'm sure that this piece has influenced a lot of film composers and such.

Lovely, yes, but soothing strains of music do not inspire a resource to confront life. Check out Beethoven.

Steve Hinnenkamp They literally offer a way to master life's hardships. For me personally, this music soothes physical pain.

Steve Hinnenkamp are you seriously implying that people listening to pärt have never heard beethoven
