To be fair, x264 is a good setting for games that uses graphic card as it uses cpu instead. However, in this case, apart from the fact that she hasn’t rebooted, holocure is actually cpu bound, making Nvidia nvenc more suitable.

Realistically she shouldn't be anything bound streaming light games like holocure, so leaving it at 264 is fine.
@KyokujiFGC

It's not better because Nvidia designs their cards with a specific chip for NVENC, which means the resource usage is much much lower compared to streaming with x264 in 99% of situations. For those curious about Sleep Mode vs Rebooting, it just depends on the user. In Miko's case, while I would say rebooting every day is a bit overkill, there are power-users who for sure do need to reboot pretty often, but for the average user or even gamer, once to twice a week is perfectly fine. Rebooting too much will stress your system and you tend to run into more issues in the long run while shortening your PC's life. If you're fine with replacing parts or your computer, than it's optimum. Also dust your PC's guts every few months, holy moley, dust is the killer of electronics. Way back when I was working help desk, and before windows forcefully rebooted PCs via updates, we would track to see which client kept their PC running the longest, and I believe the record was a doctor who had his on for ~140 weeks. More recently, one of my engineers told me he worked on an active system that hadn't been rebooted in roughly 4 years, which is astonishing if true.
@Guardian-of-Light137
@Guardian-of-Light137 Год назад
Genuine questions from someone who has no idea what they're doing with computers. By rebooting do you mean restarting or turning the computer off. Like say im done for the day I turn it off completely till the next day when I wanna use it again. Is this a good way to do it or is that "hurting my pc's lifespan" Also how would I go about cleaning the dust do I need to do a deep clean take off the pannel and get every part or can I just get the important parts and it be fine. And lastly what do people mean by sorting your drivers?
@Amagys
@Amagys Год назад
@@Guardian-of-Light137 Turning off your computer for the day is just fine, what actually wears PC parts out is the repeated power cycling which allows the parts to cool down and rapidly heat up. Over time when your parts go through cooling and heating expansion cycles something gives eventually. You will typically see longer life cycles by things that are always on or usually off. When dusting, take the panel off and blow it out properly. That's the only way to dust your PC. Don't worry about driver maintenance, modern operating systems can deal with a lot of cruft and if you aren't getting new hardware all the time it's not a concern.
@11bdragon
@11bdragon Год назад
@@Guardian-of-Light137 Rebooting is just turning the PC off and back on. Turning your PC off when you are done for the day and back on the next day will save you electricity. It might "shorten" the lifespan of some of the PC parts, but we are talking very small margins and isn't really a problem. Cleaning a PC is usually done by taking one of the side panels off of the case and using compressed air to blow the dust away. So long as you make sure the PC is off and you don't blow the compressed point blank and keep it a few inches away you will be fine. To be extra careful you can turn the power switch off which is usually right next to where the power plug cord is hooked into the PC. That switch will fully stop any power going through the PC, and should be off if you are ever moving parts or unplugging the power cord out of the PC. (the I is on and the 0 is off) Drivers are only a thing you need to worry about if you play a lot of games (in which you can update them with the software your GPU uses, such as GeFore Experience for NVIDIA cards) Otherwise drivers are just the software part of any stuff you have plugged into the PC like printers mouse etc, and should only be an issue if you are plugging in a new printer or whatever. But as long as the PC has some sort of internet connection it should download automatically. (for example if you have a wireless internet dongle thing, you will probably need to have a wired connection first so it can download its drivers when you plug the dongle in, then you can unplug the wire and the wireless should work"

@@Guardian-of-Light137 An ideal reboot is restarting your computer, that is selecting the Restart option instead of Shut Down. Shut Down actually doesn't refresh your computer when you power it back up. This is because Windows 10 has the feature called "Fast Startup" enabled by default. This is basically just putting your computer in hibernation instead of turning it off completely. This feature makes it so that when you power up your PC, it starts up faster. When you select Restart however, it completely turns off your PC and turns it on again. That's why whenever Windows forces an update, it will restart your computer instead of shutting it down.

A good advice! also never fill your drive to 99% percent of it's capacity, especially on SSD If you see your disk volume bar is red meaning you have very little headroom for mitigating bad or corrupted sectors and whatnot your drive is like a lithium battery, it wears out every time it was written/recharge, but not completely, just a little blocks, small pieces over time if your computer failed to read or write into that block they will mark it as 'dead' and make it 'un-useable' for future reference then they will try to salvage whatever data on the temporary memory somewhere else, now imagine if they have no space left on the disk

@RurouTube

Just want to inform people that use PC often but rarely reboots (as in either just using sleep or shutdown), you need to reboot once in a while. At the default setting, reboot is not the same as shutdown. The default setting for shutdown is basically like hibernate but just for the OS (they named it fast startup). For a true clean reboot, you need to either turn off fast startup or just pick restart (which obviously will turn on your PC again after the shutdown). Having said that, since with modern Windows you're basically forced to restart every time there is an update, so I guess Microsoft have you covered..... For encoding setting, back then, as in way back then, HW encoder quality is not that great and a lot of PC games doesn't really use many CPU cores (most game like only use 1 or 2 threads), thus might as well use software encoder (x264). In current situation with current games + vtuber app + OBS with probably some plugins and filters on, it is better to use hardware encoder. The quality will be better compared to a realistic x264 preset and if you want better streaming quality, you can bump up the bitrate instead of using x264 higher preset. Also since they mainly stream on YT, they can actually use H.265/HEVC which is better than H.264/AVC (or better yet, if they have Nvidia 4000 series, they can use AV1) to have the same quality at lower bitrate or better quality at the same bitrate. Afaik, only YT accept H.265 and AV1.

For anyone wondering about the difference between x264 and Nvidia NVENC: * x264: Uses the CPU. Very customizable. Generally can achieve better video quality. * Nvidia NVENC: Uses the GPU. Limited options (to what's implemented in hardware). Video Quality is decent but not the best. Video encoding on the GPU can be around an order of magnitude faster than doing it on the CPU. But there's the issue with quality, and also in the case of game streaming, you might want to keep the GPU free for the game to use it instead.
@HodgePodgeProducts
@HodgePodgeProducts Год назад
Modern NVENC quality is almost indistinguishable from reasonable x264 presets. Additionally, she has Quicksync in this system which would be even better to use. But even NVENC is not going to reduce gaming performance a noticeable amount. 100% CPU usage is not what you want a streaming setup to deal with when you already have high OBS workloads.

Damn, that's some boomer shit I dealt with as IT. "Screen's off so pc is off right"

Zoomers and Alpha are about as computer illiterate as boomers. I think basically only older millennials understand basic computer functioning.

CPU usage at 100% isn't actually a bad thing when you are doing things that are CPU intensive. If its always at 100% even when you aren't doing anything, that's when its a problem.

Its 100% because she was software encoding x264 instead of using hardware acceleration. Really bad idea for a streamer.

I have a friend who refuses to reboot or properly shut down their laptop because they "don't want to lose all of their work". And then wonder why it runs like crap.

serious question tho, how often should you be shutting down/rebooting your pc? i remember reading somewhere that its not good to always shut down the pc, better to leave it on, so im not sure either
@Maserbeam
@Maserbeam Год назад
you can continue using sleep for a long time. reboot once a week, or whenever you think it's slowing down or feels funky. in my experience, rebooting is to let system changes or installs to properly load up on startup.
@TwitchingBouse
@TwitchingBouse Год назад
eh she's not exactly wrong, its ok to leave it on, though rebooting should be one of the first things you try if you are experiencing issues.
@Idiomatick
@Idiomatick Год назад
There is no need to shut down your pc unless something breaks or windows patches. Sleep saves electricity and is much faster than a shutdown, so use it for that reason. Chat's suggestion to shutdown daily is an utter waste of time. I ran a computer repair shop for 8yrs, and did IT for around 6.

If your windows updates are on, then the reboots that those updates cause every week or two is probably enough unless you start experiencing issues.
@Turigamot

shutting down and rebooting is not really necessary except in the cases where you need to install updates to windows or drivers.
