@NVP12345 3 года назад
@@mandanglelow1442 They are absolutely underrated. I listened to a ton of "classic rock" radio growing up in the 90s and would only ever hear Yes rarely. It was always either Owner of a Lonely Heart, Roundabout or Seen All Good People - the last 2 usually only the radio edits that severely undercut the brilliance of each. I was a Zeppelin and Floyd fanatic at 15, but it took another 20 years to discover the brilliance of the Yes catalog (mostly thanks to RU-vid). They should be in the "greatest bands of all time" discussion along with the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Hendrix, Queen, or anyone else, but they basically never are. Even my brothers born in the 60s only know the radio hits, nothing of Close to the Edge, Relayer, Tales, or GFTO. A travesty. It seems is the price a band must pay for not making radio friendly music.

I LOVE IT, JAMEL! I definitely do NOT disagree! I found Yes on Christmas Day 1983 when my parents gave me a new Deluxe Fisher Jam Box and Yes' "Close to the Edge" and "The Yes Album" on cassette. I had, by total chance, looked through my brother's 25+ MILK CRATES of vinyl he had stored at our house (I was 14, he was a DJ), and found "CTTE". The ONLY reason I even took a chance on it was because I saw pictures of the band on the back, and there was a drummer named Bill Bruford who featured heavily in "Modern Drummer" and their "Simmons" Electronic Drum Ads. I HATED electronic drums, so I thought I'd see just how great Bill Bruford was back in the early 70's. Well, my mind was totally blown open. My young drumming career was monumentally advanced, and my musicality started a period of growth which has never ceased. I was literally consumed by the first ELEVEN Yes albums over the next four years, breaking them down with sheet music, learning every nook and cranny of most every song. Bill Bruford became my main drumming influence, and guitarist Steve Howe became my ideal guitarist, and still is. As Alan White came in on drums, he provided a new angle on Yes music that also was a big influence. ALL of the rotation of the members of Yes included fantastic musicians. Even in 1980, the final "classic" Yes album "Drama" and its lineup brought a whole new incorporation of new ideas and influence, and should be respected by any true Yes fan. The "90125" and forward era of Yes is for another discussion. I didn't come off my "CTTE" high for at least a year or more. When I did, it was due to hearing the song "The Gates of Delirium" off the album "Relayer" from 1974. Different drummer and keyboardist (Alan White/Patrick Moraz), but didn't matter - it is 21:54 of AWESOME. I'm happy for you to have made this discovery. There's a lot more out there! There's even some greatness on "Tormato" (and also some "???WTF???...it was the late 70's). Keep going!

Back in the 70's, I saw Yes more times in concert than any other band because they were the BEST band in concert. They are/were ALL brilliant, and their concerts were just unmatched.

Not to be young again ,just simply for the music. Good times ,real friends and in my humble opinion the best decade for music ever on gods green planet. Thank you for keeping great music alive.

I got to see them live at Richfield Coliseum April 29th 1991. Still have tix stub. Funny story, my BF was supposed to go with me, that date was her birthday. She called me up the day of the concert and cancelled--found out she's having twins! Anyway, I went to the bar I used to hang in and brother of mine (RIP Nick), was sitting there. Asked him what he had planned for the night...when he said nothing--I shoved the tix under his nose and said let's go! This was 1 1/2 hrs before the concert was to start and the venue was about the same. He ran home and showered, then we left. Yes was his favorite band. I am happy to share this memory with him as he sadly passed away a few years later of suicide. So happy to have given him a happy moment in his life.

So sorry for your loss! 🙏 I'm so jealous that you saw them in concert I would have loved to have been there but then again, I was so young I guess I wouldn't have remembered...still cuts deep! 😭 I'm not trying to sound preachy but I think God put the two of you together that night in the same place at the same time. I'm happy you have that memory because it really does sound much like divine intervention, you were given a memory to cherish that only the two of you shared and that you can carry with you until you see each other again...RIP! 💙👼💙

Yes! I love the music I grew up loving, and keep finding more. It bugs me when people my age (50s) say that all new music/bands suck. That’s just not true. There are hundreds of good rock bands that are new-ish, and talented. Some I like: Cleopatrick, Highly Suspect, Halestorm (not new, but underplayed on radio, and one of the best live bands I’ve heard in concert), Royal Blood, Badflower, Fencer, Ghost (if you can get past the cheese of their image). There are more; one just needs to look for recommendations on videos one already likes. Rock music will always be here. It’s not going away just because hip hop is pushed on us by the media. ETA: Red Sun Rising, Aaron Buchanan and the Cult Classics, Heaven’s Basement (another defunct Aaron Buchanan band worth listening to; both of these Aaron Buchanan bands broke up).

Songs back in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s with some in the early 2000s are some of the finest classic music my ears have ever listened to. They don't make those type of music anymore. Very very rare, you'll hear the latest bands today compose and create that type of genius if ever by today's generations.

I've shared Close to the Edge with young men in their late teens and early 20's to showcase the difference between the music of my youth and theirs. They couldn't get over the sheer musicality, the complexity, the concept of a 18:00+ song being able to hold one's attention. Like you, Jamel, I consider this a masterpiece never to be duplicated or covered. I had the privilege of seeing Yes perform this piece in 1979 in Denver. It left my jaw open. They also performed the Gates of Delirium that night. It was the most unforgettable night of music in my life.

"Close to the edge" by Yes is a very good choice as your top song without question. I've known this album since the day it came out and I've had the pleasure of seeing Yes live, back in the day. Opinions may vary but it is an epic musical piece as opposed to a "song." This piece of Music has several sections, which is a hallmark of many composed pieces of the classical period and considering the talent of the band, I believe this was their conception to begin with. For an album with only three pieces on it, it smokes from the second the needle drops in the record groove. There I go dating myself again. I still own the record. Best.
