The composition is nifty, but the performance really makes this. I'm astonished that this is just two performers, and their shared sense of timing is incredible.
The composition is what makes the performance lol. Like yeah, they performed it beautifully, but anyone performing the composition correctly would do the same. Not saying it's easy I just think it's funny you value the performance over the composition.
What about the composition ? It's a percussion piece and you can reduce the most important to 5 or 6 : Rebounds, Ionisation, Les Guetteurs de son, …they do a real job, of amazing taste…and the As One title is enough to understand the composition, no ?
In high school I had the amazing and wonderful privilege to play with some of the most talented percussionists I have ever known. This reminds of the many times watching in awe of their artistry. Thanks for the memories. You all know who you are.
I'm just a casual "I like drum solos" kinda guy, so I don't usually go for the classier abstract stuff like this... but WOW. Their precision and coordination is dazzling!
Every single time I went through this piece I found something new that had been overlooked in the previous run. Every time my brain melts and I have to come back to it and give it yet another listen.
I was having exactly the same thoughts as both of you :) Then the mind naturally strays to what if...Bruford and Bozzio set out to play this piece...and then how would they alter it given electronic percussion &cet...and then...just listen to it again
Might sounds really cheesy but in a way this is a physical representation of what humanity could be like if everything was ideal. Not realistically, but theoretically. It's beautiful, even as a dream
"I've got and idea," said Gene Koshinski, while drunk from vodka, "How about I have two people splitting one thing on one hand and split a completely different thing on another hand?" Gene twiddled his thumbs and began envisioning his new piece that would be called As One.
Marvellous performance by two REAL Drummers. Impeccable timing together, great tempos, and excellent work moving in and out of different time signatures. Wonderful. Thank you.
jazzyfizzle so lets say there are 2 people, and they play 4 quarter notes together. Person 1 plays notes on 1 and 3, and person 2 plays notes on 2 and 4. Thats basically what splits are kinda.
It’s no coincidence they’re both going bald. The ability to achieve this kind of synchronicity only comes years of ceaselessly practicing with a metronome and counting!
Tries to work out time signature: Brain melts This was one of the most impressive pieces of performance art I have ever experienced!!! Glad I was wearing headphones to get more of the nuances. Well done gentlemen.
In terms of the piece, this may be one of few times I understand the people who can call a piece of music "uninspired technical wankery." That being said, holy shit the performers are ridiculously good. This work may only exist to showcase how talented some people are but it works, those two dudes are obviously talented and we have been shown this.
